Just drive into this special place and enjoy. Birders must go here if traveling in Sicily. No need for a tour. Several km of trails, a few observation blinds, wetlands full of flamingoes shorebirds and waterfowl. A few euros for parking and a few for entry. Some historical buildings on one point going back 600 years. After the walk there is a little wine bar where snacks and coffees are available. Or if you want a gourmet lunch there is an outdoor service with some nice wines available. Doesn’t look like much but the food sure does.

To see...
The reserve is well maintained and clean. There are plenty of birdwatching spots, many walking trails and the historic and well-preserved trap of revengers. The €3.50 entrance ticket is valid for the whole day and to access the reserve from all available entry points. Bring water and food because there are no refreshment points inside the reserve. Highly recommended.

Nice nature,
This is a nice nature preserve with a dose of commercial activity. It does not have its own parking but some enterprising neighbours have set up a parking lot about 750 m away. 5 Euro will get you a secure spot and bottle of water. Then you walk down the road to the nature reserve ticket office and entrance is 3.50 each. This allows you entry and access to the walkways, bird blinds and old tuna processing plant. We went 10 ish and it was very hot. Limited shade except for the blinds. We did see plenty of flamingos, herons and egrets in the lagoon. Disappointingly there were. Lot of cordoned off areas - such as the salt-flats and the Swabian tower. No exhibits were open but there were some information boards. We did not go to the "beach club" which required a further fee. A free beach was accessible near the Swabian tower. If you want to go for the birds go much earlier than we did. A good 1.5 mile hike from parking lot to the Tonnara with limited shade made it very hot. Take good binoculars as the blinds are set a fair way back. Very few song birds likely due to the Sicilian hunting habits and general abundance of feral cats. Bring hats and lots of water. There were some dubious looking portapotties on the way in.

A fascinating trip with Carlo
Our walk round Vendicari was a mix of birdwatching, nature and history. Having worked in England for some years, Carlo speaks fluent English and so we had a very interesting and entertaining conversation with him. He lead us to a hide where we saw hundreds of pink flamingos. Altogether a great morning.
Take water and go to the loo before you set off!

Such a good afternoon out!
My husband and I really enjoyed our walk round the Vendicari nature reserve with Carlo. He was very knowledgeable and professional and also a charming person to spend an afternoon with. Also speaks English fluently having lived in uk for 7 years. We met him at the Roman villa near the reserve and had a quick look at the impressive mosaics. We then drove to the reserve nearby and were very lucky to have fantastic views of flamingos, spoonbills, stilts and egrets and other birds. We then walked to the ruined tuna factory where Carlo gave us a wonderful history lesson about the industry. Then walked for several kilometers while Carlo pointed out various plants along the way. It was truly a magical afternoon, rhe highlight of an excellent holiday. We hope to return and would definitely contact Carlo for another trip. Highly recommended.

A fascinating visit to Vendicari with our guide Carlo
I found this guided visit through Viator and for us this trip was one of the highlights of our holiday in Sicily. Price was reasonable and only minimum of two people was required. Many other trips require more attendants to be realized. Even though we are not overly passionate bird wathchers it was very interesting to see flamingos, cormorants, egrets and other birds in the marshlands. The nature reserve was interesting and there was much to see. Tunaplant, marshlands, beach, watchtower and many varying landscapes. Our guide Carlo was very friendly and he knew so much about the place and the plants and the animals. He also told us very interesting stories about life in Sicily now and in the old days. I very warmly recommend Carlo and Vendicari visit if you have the chance to. If we happen to visit Sicily again we will definitely go to other trip of his.
