This was an excellent tour with a very knowledgeable guide, David. david knew exactly the place to get to for the best view of the sunrise and was patient with every one of a group of mixed abilities. He had great knowledge of the mountain and the history and culture of the island. Our driver was great, navigating the narrow, twisty roads to the start point and then back to our hotels with ease I would thoroughly recommend using this company - great value.

We had an absolutely fantastic mountain hike in Madeira! Everything was perfect from start to finish. The team was punctual, professional, friendly, and lots of fun 😄 David was a wonderful guide — knowledgeable, helpful, and genuinely friendly. He made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the hike and really helped make the experience extra special. The price was also very reasonable, which made the experience even better. We felt that we got excellent value for our money. I can highly recommend this tour company to anyone looking for a beautiful, enjoyable, and memorable hiking experience in Madeira. We were extremely happy with everything!

Excellent experience. Pick up 6am by guide David from Up Mountain Madeira in a total party of 8. Drove up through drizzle in clouds on the E103 to Pico do Areeiro. Then we got out and saw stars with mighty Orion setting the scene for a great day. At 7am we all immediately started on the hike to avoid the crowds but the extensive cloud layer below hid the sunrise. A very damp foggy first 5km or so with intermittent views, sections very narrow but good at the Ninho da Manta and the Stairway to Heaven. Some sections very slippery underfoot especially down stone steps and wet cables but David kept us safe. Through several tunnels and onwards to the Casa de Abrigo where the sun broke through. Stiff climb up to Pico Ruivo in the sunshine! Superb views in all directions and then descent and easy 3km finish to Achada do Teixeira and eventually down to Santana for a beer. Highly recommend Up Mountain Madeira for value, safety, knowledge and care.

Perfect from start to finish! Friendly & helpful guide, safe driver and bonus of a short stop in Santana on the way back. I had previously attempted this hike solo and panicked after experiencing vertigo so rebooked with a guide for peace of mind. He was very kind and reassuring and I was able to complete the entire hike this time with my husband. Highly recommend this well organised tour- the views are breathtaking!

Our hike from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo was an unforgettable experience and one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Madeira! Our guide David was fantastic—friendly, professional, and knowledgeable about the path, nature, and the island’s history. David made sure everyone in our small group felt comfortable and safe throughout the hike. During our way we are sharing interesting stories and facts about the island. The breathtaking views were made even more special by the guide’s enthusiasm and local insights. His positive energy and passion for Madeira were truly contagious. The hike was an amazing experience. No pictures can capture the awe inspiring views. In total it was about 6 miles. If you’re young and fit you should cope very well. I’m 65 years old and only average fitness. For me it was close to my physical limits but nevertheless managed it. It started at 6 degrees so a warm top and wind proof light coat was important. Also bring a rucksack, walking shoes, a torch, snacks and some water. I think it’s far better to have a guide. The route is incredibly well maintained and I felt safe at all times.

PR1 hike. David was excellent as our guide. He made sure to tell us exactly what to expect. The car driver though - not happy. His driving was not good. Often going very fast around the mountain and on the highway. Felt very unsafe. But the guide and hike was excellent.

Great guide! Helpful on the hike and very friendly. Nice to not have to worry about drive and knowledge about how to approach hike.
