Chris is a wonderful guide! He is friendly, open, easy to talk with and knows the mountains around Hokkaido extremely well, He is thoroughly knowledgeable about the hundreds of trails in the area. We asked him to modify our route a bit to take account of a couple of bad knees which he did easily and seamlessly, which is to say without any fuss. Chris knows all of the flora and fauna of the region and equipped himself with bear repellent, which we did not need to use. At the end of our 11km hike, Chris prepared us a delicious camping lunch and then took us to a local Onsen for a wonderful hot spring/cold plunge bath with sauna, the excellent end to a lovely day. We would recommend Chris highly! While we trekked with Chris in September, he also leads day and overnight snowshoe excursions in the winder months.

Chris was a fantastic trekking guide—highly experienced, professional, and extremely well prepared. From the very beginning, it was clear that he knew exactly what he was doing, and I felt completely safe with him throughout the hike. He had taken every possible safety precaution, carrying bear spray, plenty of water, snacks, electrolytes, and everything else we might need. He carefully assessed my fitness level and chose the perfect route for me: challenging enough to be rewarding, but never too difficult. It was exactly the right balance. He also prepared a good outdoor lunch and took me to a beautiful spot by the lake with an even better view. Beyond being an excellent guide, Chris is simply great company—friendly, easy-going, and very knowledgeable about both Japan and the wider world. We had fascinating conversations about all sorts of subjects throughout the day, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Finishing the day with a relaxing onsen after the hike was the perfect ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and strongly recommend both this tour and Chris as a guide.

Chris really took care of everything and provided great company for a day of hiking and quick trip to the onsen. What a great way to experience the beauty of Hokkaido and all without needing to travel too far out of Sapporo. Soranuma Dake provided stunning views and the color of the many lakes we passed were beautiful. Highly recommend if you like hiking.

Chris was an excellent guide. We appreciated the emphasis that he placed on safety. He not only selected a trail that appropriately challenged us physically, but we also learned a lot from him about the flora and fauna of the area. He also went out of his way to provide us return transportation from the hike.

What an incredible day we had! We were challenged, rewarded, Chris was great at pointing out any risks—bears, trip hazards, and anything else we needed to be aware of—which made us feel prepared. We crossed bridges, followed beautiful streams, and enjoyed scenery that seemed to change around every corner. Chris kept us captivated with his amazing knowledge of the local flora. We learned so much along the way! Reaching Mt Soranuma under magical, clear skies was brilliant after all the hard work. What a monster day—tough, beautiful, and unforgettable. The hike was amazing with spectacular views. Our guide Chris did a wonderful job. He was patient and responsive to our requests. We ended the hike with a relaxing onsen. Definitely worth the hike. Arigato gozaimasu!

My experience with Chris was excellent. The scenery was breath taking, hiking into the the clouds. As a first time hiker in Japan, the advise from Chris was very valuable. He took me for the best route he thinks is best for that day. I did not know that bears was a local hazard in Japan so I was glad he showed me how to stay safe. Furthermore, his knowledge on the local customs and culture was invaluable; it made me much more comfortable knowing how to behave like a respectful tourist.

Rained the day of, so we chose to adjust the plan. Chris ensured we had a wonderful experience despite the hiccup.

Chris was professional, very knowledgeable on the area and super accomodating. A novice to trekking I got a great experience of a good climb , with spectacular views of the area and no question was left unanswered. Exactly what I was after! Highly recommended!

I had a great time with Chris at Trekmate Hokkaido. I was doing a long solo trip around Asia and I wanted to go hiking in a remote area in Hokkaido. Other hiking tours had strict schedules that would have made it hard to fit into my trip. It would have been really hard to go solo as public transportation is complicated and cabs are expensive. Chris put together a great custom schedule for the exact dates I was going to be in Hokkaido. We did a three-day tour and went up the Tokachi-Dake, Mt Oakan, and Mt Meakan. I was picked up at my hotel in Sapporo by Chris in the Trekmate van. We drove four hours directly to the first trailhead. I was very impressed by the level of preparation. Chris brought several food options, and we had the unique experience of eating at the summit! That night we slept at an onsen/hostel. The next day we camped at a campsite. During the hikes, I enjoyed how Chris explained the geological history of the volcanoes and he pointed out local wildlife. I highly recommend this experience if you are looking for a custom hike in Hokkaido that includes transportation.
