We had a wonderful day with our guides Lily and Stella. The kayaking was easy, which was good for me since I am a beginner. Our guides were terrific. Both of them had a vast knowledge of plant and animal life. Stella carries her guidebook with her own beautiful drawings of plants and animals surrounded by interesting facts about each item. She shared it with us at lunch. Lily has a real passion about marine life and even made a horn for us from bull kelp, which she played for us. We saw Doll Porpoises, and harbour seals, and bald eagles. It was a wonderful day!
It’s great to hear that the paddling felt comfortable for you as a beginner and that the conditions made it easy to relax and enjoy the day. Stella’s illustrated field guide is something she puts a lot of care into, so it’s wonderful to hear you had a chance to spend time with it during lunch. Lily’s enthusiasm for marine life really does shine through on the water, and the bull kelp horn is often one of those unexpected little moments that people remember long after the trip. Dall’s porpoises, harbour seals, and bald eagles are always a special combination to encounter in a single outing, so it sounds like the wildlife truly put on a show for you. Thank you for taking the time to share this experience with us. We really appreciate it, and we hope to see you again soon for another adventure!
We went on the all day tour with Stella and Lily as our guides. We were met at the dock when we arrived by the guides and our group was expertly set up with kayaks and gear. The tour on the water was spectacular as we saw porpoises, sea lions, seals, and numerous eagles along the route. Lunch on a secluded bay topped off the trip. The guides knowledge of the ocean and the animals was second to none. One of the staff (Austin) even took our dog out for a walk mid-day so that we could be out on the all day tour. This place is amazing and we will certainly be back. Value for the dollar can't be beat!
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review! We’re glad to hear you had an amazing experience on the all-day tour with Stella and Lily, and that you got to see so much incredible wildlife along the way. It’s also great to know the kayak setup, lunch stop, and overall organization helped make the day smooth and enjoyable. We’re especially glad Austin could help out with your dog so you could fully enjoy your time on the water; that’s exactly the kind of teamwork we aim for. We’d be happy to welcome you back anytime for another trip on the water!
Great day of kayaking with Rebecca and Leanna. We saw a bear, sea lions and helped rescue a waterlogged bald eagle. We had a great day. Guides were very knowledgeable, professional and fun. Highly recommended.
We’re thrilled to hear you had such an unforgettable day on the water with Rebecca and Leanna. Spotting a bear and sea lions is always special, and helping with the rescue of the waterlogged bald eagle is exactly the kind of rare, meaningful wildlife moment that makes these trips so memorable. We’ll be sure to pass your kind words along to the guides. They’ll be really happy to hear your feedback. We appreciate you choosing North Island Kayak and hope to see you out paddling with us again in the future!
Lovey day kayaking, led so well by Stella assisted by Brad! Really nice pacing of the day, some slow times when we could just look and listen, and other times paddling steadily following the orcas - what a great experience. So much to see and talk about over lunch at a beautiful spot, and as we were paddling. The perfect weather added to a fabulous trip, and it was great to meet new people, share stories, and grab some great photos and memories. Thanks so much North island Kayak! 10/10
That sounds like an incredible day on the water! We’re really glad you got those calm moments mixed with the excitement of seeing orcas. Lunch at a nice spot always makes the day even better. Stella and Brad will love hearing this. Thanks for coming out with us, and we hope to see you again for another paddle soon!
Great scenery and wildlife. Good equipment. Not sure the guide has what it takes to interact with (paying) customers, who were mostly left unsure and confused as to where they should be on the water. I felt sorry for a Catalan couple from Barcelona who were subjected to a nonsensical and egotistical tirade regarding rules that were never set out in the first place and were then applied completely inconsistently. It could well have been directed at us too but we weren’t sure what was going on or what to do! It was a beautiful day but we were left with a bad taste at the end it, after being made to feel like naughty school children being told off by a teacher with a massive ego!!
Ewan, thank you so much for joining us and for your feedback as well. We truly do appreciate it so that we can follow up and constantly improve. We certainly aim to offer an excellent, comfortable adventure in this tranquil place. So sorry to hear we fell short this time. We're glad you could still enjoy the nature element albeit not entirely peaceful. Hopefully you had some great wildlife sightings and an overall lovely visit to the North Island! Should you ever plan to return, do ensure to send us an email.
Family of 5 (all adults), we had an amazing full days kayaking with Janae leading the way. She was fantastic and shared so much local knowledge in a friendly and light hearted way. The weather turned a bit tasty on the return trip and Janae took the sensible decision to cut the trip short which was totally understood and appreciated. It's the second trip we have done with the company and would certainly do so again.
Thanks so much for joining us again, and for the review! We're glad you enjoyed the trip with Janae and the poor weather didn't affect your time too much. Of course safety is always the top priority so thank you for your understanding. Hopefully you had some wonderful sightings, and we hope to see you again next time!
What and amazing 4-day trip! Beautiful scenery, comfortable campsites, great food, and wildlife galore - Orcas, humpbacks, bear, deer, eagles, kingfishers, sea lions, porpoises, and more. Our guides were excellent and our traveling companions all fun and excited about the experience (with ages ranging from early 30s to early 70s!). The guides tailored each day to our capabilities and the wildlife opportunities. We had one very rainy day, but it was all part of the adventure... Highly, highly recommended.
Thanks so much for the fabulous review! It sounds like you enjoyed an incredible trip, full of wildlife sightings and connection with nature and adventurers. It's great to hear you found the food and basecamps comforting, as well as the care of the guides. We hope to see you again for another adventure!
We paddled out of Telegraph Cove for the 6 hour tour on the most beautiful wind still and sunny morning in September - during the tour we saw a bachelor sea otter (called Fred), bald eagles, we encountered a curious a black bear during our lunch stop on the beach, and saw a pod of resident orcas, that passed exactly where we had paddled just an hour or so before. It was one of the highlights of our trip! Thanks also to our great guide Jan.
Thanks for the stellar review, Meike, we're so glad you enjoyed your day tour with us! What a wonderful array of wildlife you encountered, how majestic! We hope you had an incredible visit to the island, and that you'll be back again someday soon.
My 4 day experience in July 2023 was so wonderful, it compelled me to come back and paddle for 5 days this year! We paddled close to 80km over 5 days, and even though we had spent 4 days in these waters last year, our guides insured we had new experiences. And Mother Nature looked after the rest - putting on a spectacular show with Humpbacks, Orcas, Seals and Sea Lions, Eagles, and so many water birds! Trip highlights were watching humpbacks breach, hitting the water with the full force of their mass. Pods of orcas gliding by, so sleek and graceful. A group of dolphins charging through the water like a gaggle of kids at a family gathering, doing circles and showing off for the orcas. The sound of the whales breathing. Even for this girl from the Lower Mainland, this was unbelievable - like being in a nature documentary. Camps were so comfy with cots and thermarests, patio heaters - and the food!! So delicious!!! Our guides, Brad and Georgia, were so supportive and helpful, so knowledgeable. We were in the most beautiful environment, with excellent equipment, being given the most amazing experience by truly wonderful guides. 10/10!! This is the summer camp I'd like to visit for as long as I'm able. I'm 61 and see no reason not to plan to paddle for many years to come.
Thanks so much for the detailed review! It's amazing to hear about wildlife encounters, making you feel as if you're in a nature documentary! It sounds like you got to see a ton of what the area has to offer in a very immersive way. The delicious meals and comfy cots never cease to impress in a wilderness setting! We would love to keep up the tradition and have you back for another adventure next season... maybe next time you'll be up for the 6-day nomadic expedition!
Incredible day out on the water with guides Georgia and Connor. Super friendly, knowledgeable and funny and great local facts about the wildlife, geology and culture surrounding the Johnstone Strait. We saw otters, seals, eagles, sea stars and even ate kelp! No orcas on the trip but luckily we were treated to a pod cruising by in the evening back on the Telegraph Cove boardwalk! A perfect end to a super day in a beautiful place! Great recommendations by Connor to visit the Whale Interpretive Centre and U’mista Cultural Centre over in Alert Bay too 😊
Thanks for the five stars, Ben! We are delighted that you had fun and enjoyed your kayaking adventure, and got to experience the local wildlife. We hope you learned something new from Georgia and Connor regarding the area's history. We would love to paddle with you again if you ever come back to visit the North Island.
