This is a Maori village in which some twenty Maori families actually live. Tours of the village are offered on an hourly basis, by guides who live in the village. They provide detailed explanations on the village's history, the traditions of the Maori inhabitants, their culture and religious ceremonies, etc. The village is situated in the middle of a geothermally active zone, with a few hot springs directly in the village. The springs serve both medicinal purposes (good to treat for ex. arthritis) and are used for cooking (!) (we were offered little pieces of corn on the cob cooked in the boiling water). Adjacent to the village are a few geothermal ponds through which you can walk on a marked pathway.Educational.

A day to remember
We got the all day pass, which started at 9am with a guided tour through the Village. This was a great insight into Whakarewarewa, and the guide’s passion for the village was amazing. We then did the self guided tour of the geo trails. We finished our day with the cultural performance. This was breathtaking and quite emotional. We were very lucky to see a visiting group from Rapa Iti, in French Polynesia, perform as well which was special.

A welcoming, authentic place
I loved the legitimate authenticity of my visit and felt welcomed as family. Our guide lived in the village and her family heritage was full of former guides. I learned so much about Maori culture as well as the geothermal activity, and the sweet corn was a delightful and delicious touch.

Best Maori Experience
The most wonderful experience that I have had in a native Maori village. The purchasing of the tickets, the instructions to meet with the tour guide, the logistics the friendliness of every one involved in the event. Excellent and I most definitely will recommend this to my family and friends.

Highly Recommended Cultural Experience!!!!
We highly recommend the Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village tour. Our guide, John, is a descendant of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao. His great-great-great-grandmother was a highly esteemed kupuna and a gifted tour guide. The history of this community is amazing, as well as the village itself. We were fortunate to have only four people in our tour group, which made it more intimate and provided a deeper, richer experience. Mahalo John. We were honored to be among the spirits of your ancestors.

A great experience
Great tour to experience the village, and their culture.
Our guide was very informative and friendly, and we sampled corn on the cob cooked in the hot water pool they use for cooking - it was delicious!
We also did the self guided tour around the thermal pools afterwards, very interesting to see and experience.
Would recommend doing the combo package.

A truly unique experience.
This is truly a unique tour and a great way to experience the Maori culture. It is a must do for anyone wanting to understand the origins of the New Zealand people. It is wheelchair accessible and is also easy to get around for anyone with mobility issues. Everyone who works / lives here are very helpful and friendly.

Immerse yourself in another culture
It was very nice to dive into the knowledge of the maori. I liked the singing of a maori best before we started.
