10/10 – An Incredible Cultural Experience in the Heart of Rotorua Te Pā Tū was an absolutely incredible cultural experience — engaging, powerful, moving, and full of heart. I loved having the opportunity to learn how to use the poi and take part in the haka. It made the experience feel so interactive and gave me an even deeper appreciation for Māori culture. The hosts were genuinely wonderful people — funny, kind, caring, and incredibly welcoming. They created such a warm atmosphere and made the whole experience so much fun. The performances and singing were incredibly powerful. “Pōkarekare Ana” was especially moving — one of those moments where the whole room seemed to go quiet and simply take in the emotion and beauty of the performance. The food was another highlight. It felt deeply connected to Māori culture, with a sharing-style meal served around large tables. I really loved this because it encouraged everyone to connect, talk, and get to know the other guests on the tour. It made the evening feel less like a performance you were watching and more like an experience you were genuinely part of. This is easily a 10/10 experience and something I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Rotorua. An unforgettable evening filled with culture, connection, laughter, beautiful food, and powerful storytelling. we had a large group of just over 100 but the way you are spread out it does not feel that big, it is very intimate
OMG what an amazing night of learning and sharing.. Fantastic Kai, waiata and laughs..Total must do experience in Rotorua
We booked this based on both a positive write-up in a travel guide and the reviews on TripAdvisor. We had high hopes for an evening where we learned both more about the Maori people and their cuisine. Nope. This was a very expensive tourist trap. The pickup from the hotel was late, the "cultural experience" was definitely not educational (we learned so much more from the museums and other experiences around NZ), far too much time was spent trying to show off songs in other cultures/languages instead of focusing on sharing the Maori culture, and the food was not Maori cuisine. Even one of our other tour members asked where the banana leaves came from. They had no idea how to respond. The food was the equivalent of a Cheesecake Factory. Service was horrible. Rarely did anyone come along for drink refills. During the meal, no serving utensils were provided. You are seated with strangers at large tables where everyone is eating with their utensils and then using them to scoop out food from shared serving plates and bowls. Seriously?! I guess we learned nothing from COVID? Then they brought out pots of tea, but no tea cups. So people were chugging their water and cocktails and pouring hot tea into glasses. THEN they realized it and brought around tea cups - of course, by that time the tea pots were empty. At the end of this horrible evening, they completely forgot to provide dessert to our entire table. While everyone else was finished and headed back to the shuttle, our table was waiting on them to scramble to find dessert. We were frustrated and angry that we spent so much money and time on such a horrible tourist trap that we left and went back to the shuttle to wait. It was at least midnight before we got back. NEVER again. If you want to learn about the Maori people - and their cuisine - this is NOT the place to do it. There are far better places throughout New Zealand. Unless you are being paid to do so, I don't know why you'd ever give this a five-star review!
Great way to spend an evening in Rotorua. Very informative about the Māori culture and customs. Food was great! The welcome and healing ceremony was very moving, and the singers’ voices were all amazing during the ceremony as well as during the performance after dinner.
Very special experience with a truly lovely, great Maori family. They are very friendly and make you feel at home. The food was very good and plentiful. The show was very fun. The transfer service from the hotel was very convenient. Highly recommended for a visit to Rotorua.
What a soulful experience, a beautiful opening ceremony, engaging experiences to learn about the history and the culture, and food galore family style. We got to sit with the tribal leaders daughter and she’s incredible. I was so impressed with the singing at the end of the night.
It was an excellent place to come and learn about Maori culture. It felt authentic and everyone was so welcoming. Food was gorgeous and plentiful - be prepared to leave well fed! Plenty of entertainment and culture to absorb - beautiful songs, moving ceremonies, and experiencing some of the games and skills they use. Transfer to and from the venue was easy - some hotels have pickups, or you could go to the Meeting Place in the centre of Rotorua and get picked up from there.
We are from the US, the night was an amazing display of culture, history, talented performers and delicious food! Perhaps there is more nuance to this if you are more local, but we could not be happier with our choice to book here! From transportation at the meeting point, to the intro ceremony, the interactive elements, the very talented, beautiful voices and musicians of the troupe, and the delicious abundance of family style dinner offerings, everything was amazing! We watched them Perform a Haka and then got to try the Haka ourselves! At the end of the night, they dropped us back at our hotel. Thank you and Kia Ora!!!
Excellent cultural experience at Tamaki Maori Village. Before entering the village we had the privilege to see and participate in their welcoming ceremony. We then went inside the village and to different stations or “houses” to learn different parts of the Maori culture such as activities, about their houses, how they use flax and were served local foods at each station . They then explained how they cook the food for their traditional feast and we were escorted into the dining hall for an amazing feast of local foods and traditional music and entertainment.
I needed a break from work (NZ) and used the AI Travel bot on TripAdvisor to make a 3-day weekend plan. I wanted emphasis on highly-ranked, nature, cultural- and art-forward experiences. Te Pā Tū was the first suggestion in the itinerary. I have done a wide array of cultural experiences around the world. The Te Pā Tū evening was truly enjoyable, not as tourist-focused as many things I've seen, and was a self-respecting look at Māori culture and learning for tuaiwi (foreigners). They also went out of the way to make sure diet requirements like vegetarian were accommodated, and it fit seamlessly into the evening. I appreciated learning more about Matariki. I also noted the high quality of the clothing and traditional dress presented by the whanau (family) during the presentations, waiata (songs), and dancing. The singing was high quality, and the food was abundant and excellent. I am already thinking about who in my whanau to bring to Rotorua to take part in this experience in the future.
