Beautiful Whale Shark, But Not the Experience I Hoped For

My rating is actually a 2.5, and it breaks my heart to write this because I love whale sharks so much and read the reviews before I booked this excursion. Please read this entire review so you know what to look out for and what could be improved to make this a better experience. The captains of the boat really set the tone for an excursion, and unfortunately, I don't think ours were the best. One of the guys was okay in temperament, but the actual captain steering the boat, a man with a gray beard, nearly ruined the experience completely for us. He was yelling constantly - at us, at people on other boats, and just in general. It gave me and the girls I was with so much anxiety. Some of my friends are scared of the ocean, and some were even scared of whales, so they were already being incredibly brave by signing up for this excursion. A little encouragement, reassurance, and positivity would have made a world of difference. When we first arrived, we were all a bit nervous and hesitant to jump into the water right away. When he asked who was ready to go, it took us about 20 seconds to figure it out. In that short amount of time, he was already saying, "If you don't want to go in, we'll just turn the boat back." This felt completely unnecessary and immediately changed the mood for us. Of course we wanted to go in - we just needed a moment to figure out the order and get ourselves ready. It would have been nice if they had helped us make sure our snorkeling masks, life jackets, and flippers were properly secured. Instead, it felt like go, go, go, and we felt rushed and panicked. That panic followed me into the water, where I was struggling to catch my breath. I think it would be much better not to rush people into the water, especially when they are already nervous. My snorkeling gear came out of my mouth, and my friend's gear completely came off. That was really scary. We also had to hold hands the entire time, which made it difficult to actually experience the whale shark and take everything in. There was a constant feeling of panic about finding our partner and keeping track of the captain. I have been on other excursions like this before and never experienced this type of anxiety, so it was especially upsetting because this excursion was quite expensive. When it was time to get back on the boat, we were being yelled at to "MOVE!" and "GET OUT OF THE WAY!" because the stairs needed to come down. However, the stairs should have been brought down as we were making our way back to the boat, rather than once we were already there. The captain also yelled at me to take off my flippers, but I was confused about whether he was going to take them off or whether I was supposed to. It was difficult to understand what he wanted because he was yelling nonstop rather than giving clear instructions. It would have been much easier if he had simply said, "Take them off one at a time in the water and pass them to me one by one." The Isla Mujeres stop was nice and a much-needed break. They gave us guacamole, ceviche, and water. I was told that we would also receive vegetarian sandwiches, which we did not get, so that was a little disappointing. We also went snorkeling, and this part was nice. I was still feeling anxious from the earlier experience, but one of the captains was much calmer and kinder at this point. The fish were colorful and beautiful. They take videos of you with the whale sharks, but their priority is the whale shark itself, so there is a chance that your video might not even include you. The footage costs $100, is sent to you via AirDrop, and can take quite a bit of time to receive. We also saw other boats taking pictures that guests were able to purchase at the store, but our boat did not have any pictures taken. Lastly, what hurt the most was hearing that the day before, there had been hundreds of whale sharks in the area we visited, but on our day, there was only one. I don't understand why they didn't try to find a better spot or location with more whale sharks. The captain told us that because there was only one whale shark that day, they would scout for a new location the following day. This was so disheartening to hear. Normally, I would expect the captains to keep looking until they find a better location using the tools and resources they have available. Instead, it really felt like they were eager for the excursion to end. Overall, the captains were not fun, funny, warm, encouraging, or entertaining. There were no good vibes or laughs from the captains, which really affected the experience. Our boat had 10 people on it, and our side of the boat was also soaked, and we could barely see because of all the splashing we experienced for nearly 30 minutes straight. The other side of the boat was completely dry, so keep that in mind when choosing where to sit. It is recommended that you wear your swimsuit as soon as you get on the boat. The crew did not instruct us to do this, so our clothes got wet, and it was difficult to change into our swimsuits once we arrived at the location. I really wanted to love this experience because I absolutely love whale sharks, which is why it is so disappointing for me to leave a 2.5 star review. I think the actual experience could be significantly better with calmer, more encouraging guides/captains, clearer instructions, and a little more attention to the comfort and safety of the guests. TL;DR: 1. Be in your swimsuit as soon as you get on the boat. 2. Make sure your snorkeling mask, life jacket, and flippers are secured tightly before getting in the water. 3. Take off your flippers one at a time in the water before trying to climb back onto the boat. 4. You may not receive the vegetarian sandwiches; we were only given guacamole, ceviche, and water. 5. You need to be a strong swimmer to have a good chance of appearing in the video footage. Their priority is the whale shark, so if you don't swim well, you may not be in the shot. 6. The video footage costs $100 and is sent via AirDrop.

事業者からの返答

Thank you for choosing us for your excursion and for taking the time to share such detailed, constructive feedback. We are genuinely sorry that your experience did not meet expectations and that the crew’s communication caused stress rather than making you feel calm and supported. Swimming with whale sharks can be intimidating, especially for nervous swimmers. That day brought rougher sea conditions and difficult searching, which placed extra pressure on our captain and crew to navigate safely and ensure everyone got their chance in the water. However, while open-ocean safety requires quick reactions—such as keeping swimmers clear of boat ladders and props—there is no excuse for shouting or cursing. We are addressing this directly with our team to ensure instructions are always delivered with patience and respect, regardless of conditions. To address your other points: Video Pricing: Our standard media package is $60 per couple. Because you had a group of four, the crew offered a discounted rate of $100 total to cover your entire group together, rather than charging separate couple rates. We are also refining our recording process so every swimmer gets balanced coverage. Wildlife Encounters: Whale sharks are wild animals in the open sea, and their presence changes daily depending on currents and plankton. Even with challenging conditions, our team worked hard to locate them within the regulated marine zone. Food & Amenities: We apologize that the vegetarian sandwiches were missed. We take dietary requests seriously and are tightening our prep checklist so future orders are fulfilled properly. We are glad you enjoyed the reef snorkeling and the stop at Isla Mujeres, but we understand where the main excursion fell short. Please reach out to us directly at infoislaseatours@gmail.com so we can follow up with you personally. We truly hope you will give us another chance in the future so we can provide the warm, seamless, and encouraging adventure you deserved. Isla Sea Tours Team.

Excellent, Knowledgeable Guides for a GREAT Price

The absolute best bang for the buck. Our captain and guide were excellent. Put us right on the whale sharks and navigated a lot of traffic with ease and skill. Great videos for an incredibly affordable price. After the whale sharks and a short snorkel we had the best ceviche I've ever had with beer right there in crystal clear water. Additionally, as long as I was wearing a wetsuit, I did not have to wear a life vest which I greatly appreciated.

Highly recommend, experience of a lifetime

Cannot recommend this enough. We took the whale shark tour in late July, 2026 and had an amazing time. Our guide was excellent, we saw a ton of whale sharks and two manta rays in three jumps into the ocean (there were 5 pairs of us in the boat, everyone got three rounds of a few minutes each in the ocean with the whale sharks). They had vegetarian sandwiches for the ride out/back, and delicious pineapple, chips, and fresh guacamole when we stopped at Playa Norte for 45 minutes on the way back.

Tour of a lifetime:)

Our family group of 10 had a fantastic whale shark experience with Isla Sea Tours. Javier and Joseph were kind, knowledgeable and helpful. Javier gave clear instructions to help us experience the whale sharks safety and get the maximum benefit from our time in the water. This was a huge highlight of our Cancun trip. Thanks so much for all the hard work of the team to give us such an amazing family tour of a lifetime.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE—GO

This experience was absolutely phenomenal! The pick up from our hotel was very convenient and helped us not stress about getting to the pier on time. O every single staff member we encountered was SO kind and considerate. The boat ride itself was so fun and my new husband (we did this as a honeymoon excursion) said “I’d pay the money just for this”. Carlos our in-water guide and Julian the driver were AMAZING! They were kind and taught us about the whale sharks on the way to the swimming area. We also saw dolphins, a huge manta ray, and a sea turtle. Carlos made sure we knew where exactly to look when we were in the water to get the best view and closest experience to the whale sharks. Then afterwards they made us fresh guacamole and ceviche which was DELICIOUS, and served what my husband called the best ham sandwiches he’s ever had! This was such an amazing experience and we would recommend this tour to anyone and everyone coming to Cancun/Playa Mujeres looking to go swim with whale sharks! It was also more affordable than any of the other tours we had been offered at the resort or elsewhere!
