The entire route along the upper level is well-organized and safe. After exploring the roof, we went down to see the majestic interior of the cathedral. We bought the lift package and it saved us a lot of time. The security check takes a bit, so arrive early. Inside the Duomo is beautiful, but the rooftop terraces are the true highlight of the tour.

The lines can get massive. The lift is definitely worth it, especially if you have kids or mobility issues. Note that even with the lift, there are still some stairs to climb at the very top to reach the highest level.
