The Atitan Lake tour was very good. However, the transportation was a horror story. Starting out the transportation was 30 minutes after the latest published time. To make up time the driver had a small accident on the way. OK not all bad until the way back to Antigua. The van was over loaded, three people sitting on a two seat bench and four on a three seat. Then just about a mile out of town the driver stops to give his friend a free ride. Finally, after most of the way done we had to switch vans as some of the passengers were going to Guatemala City. This was not enjoyable to say the least.

We had a great experience, Everything was on schedule. We had full day of adventures and experiences… Would recommend!

The tour was not what I expected based on the description. Overall, my family & appreciated the transportation and the amount of ground we were able to cover, but the experience felt much more focused on directing us toward specific restaurants and shops than teaching us about the mayan culture and actually giving us time to explore the towns. Our day started around 5:30 a.m. in Antigua. We had a small group of seven, so everyone had plenty of room in the shuttle, which was a comfortable van. The drive to Panajachel is about 2.5 hours, and our driver was quick but still made me feel safe. Just be aware that the roads are VERY winding. I got motion sickness, but that’s obviously not the tour company’s fault. Once we arrived in Panajachel, though, the experience started to go downhill for me. Instead of having any time to explore the town, we were dropped directly at a waterfront restaurant and expected to have breakfast there. The view was 10/10, but the food was 0/10, especially considering we had no choice in the food location and had to pay for breakfast separately. When I travel, I really like authentic food and this was just tossed on a plate. The omelette had square slices of cheddar cheese and deli-style turkey inside, was drenched in sauce, and had huge pieces of bell pepper and onion on top. The coffee was cold. The Chapin breakfast was the safer option, but even that wasn’t very good. The beans were cold and tasted like canned/Ducal beans. It was disappointing because there are so many places my family and I would have preferred, especially as guatemalans ourselves. San Juan ended up being our favorite stop. It’s colorful, vibrant, and beautiful, and we really wish we’d had more freedom there. When we arrived, we wanted to grab coffee but were told we couldn’t until after the guided portion of the tour. We sat through a couple of demonstrations, which were interesting, but afterward we were directed through stores where there was clearly an expectation to shop. We especially didn’t like this because we had asked initwlly asked about free time aka coffee. After 30 minutes, we had about 40 minutes of free time, but that didn’t leave much time to actually explore before we had to return to the boat. The next stop was described as more of a “hippie” town which is mainly restaurants with lots of tourists and not much cultural sightseeing which was fine and expected. Cool town nonetheless. Santiago was our least favorite stop. Again, we were taken to a specific restaurant and asked to order our lunch meal before beginning the tour. Afterward, we were given two sightseeing options: walk to the church or take a tuk-tuk to four different places both places around give time constraints. It was sold as we’d be able to see more and were guided to hand selected tuktuk drivers that cost 50 quetzales each per person. If you’re a tourist, this is expensive when a separate tuktuk took us around the island before for 10 quetzales for 4 people. We chose the four-stop option assuming it meant we’d see more and learn more but didn’t find it worthwhile. One stop involved going into someone’s home, which felt a little uncomfortable, and another was essentially a small museum/gallery selling paintings. I would have much rather spent that time freely exploring the town. People that accompanied us ordered food which was fine we didn’t mind waiting as my group didn’t because we just wanted to go home at that point. But then you basically have to eat there since you order before the tour. The boat rides themselves were an experience! The lake can get VERY choppy because of the wind, so expect a bumpy ride. I personally felt fine on the boat, and it was actually kind of fun, but it’s definitely something to know beforehand. Overall, I appreciated the transportation, the driver, the small group size, and the opportunity to see several towns around Lake Atitlán in one day. However, I wouldn’t personally choose this tour again. I went into it wanting to explore the towns, experience the culture, find my own cafés and restaurants, and wander around. Instead, I frequently felt like we were being directed toward specific restaurants, shops, demonstrations, and purchasing opportunities. If you’re someone who likes a very structured tour and doesn’t mind being taken to predetermined restaurants and shops, you may enjoy it. But if your priority is having time and freedom to actually explore each town, I would look for a different tour or consider arranging through a trusted hotel partner and doing due diligence. Overall, the tour felt gimmicky and wouldn’t recommend.

Very well coordinated experience. Pickup and drop off in Antigua was easy and well communicated. We went to a few different villages and did a bunch of activities. I also decided to stay overnight in San Juan and come to Antigua the following day and they were very accommodating and allowed me to return the following day with the other group at no extra charge.

The guided tour part of the lake was excellent. Good pace to the many visits and lots of good information. Eli was an excellent guide and cannot fault. I have not given 5 stars as the transportation to the lake is disappointing. The transport seems to be outsourced. There is no guide. No explanations of how long the drive will be. The bus was packed and extremely uncomfortable and certainly not premium given the price paid. For this reason I would not recommend this trip even though the guide was excellent.

I would say this tour was a very educational one. Learning about Guatemala and the Mayan culture was great. One of the best tours I ever had. 100% recommended.

Pick up location was changed last minute and no notice so was standing at the wrong cafe waiting for shuttle.

I had a great experience on this tour with our wonderful guide Susi. I was able to learn a lot about the small towns in Lake Atitlan without needing figure out the logistics. I appreciated that we went beyond the tourist areas and learned about the people of this area on a deeper level. The tour company coordinated both hotel pick and hotel drop-off as a part of this tour package - a completely seamless experience for me as the customer.
