My wife and I really enjoyed the cooking class and learning about some of the Malaysian intermixing of cultures and ethnicities. We were able to cook a range of really nice food during this activity. The cooking teacher and his wife were also very lovely people and made everything a lovely experience.

Cooking class with cultural aspects
The tour with the two of them was very interesting. The market guide in particular gave a good insight into the different nationalities here in Penang. You could also experience a piece of everyday life here.
The actual cooking class was very interesting and the food was really very delicious. We especially liked the connection between the culture and the food cooked.
Suggestion for improvement from our side:
- a central air conditioning system in the rooms. The 20 counted fans are simply a bit too loud and unfortunately diminish the result a bit... Especially for people who are prone to migraines.
- Hand out recipes as a printed version on paper (all data was exchanged via WhatsApp)

Food and culture
They are the cutest couple running this cooking class. You start the day off in the market meeting some amazing shop owners, have breakfast and then will
Make your way to the cooking class where you will learn to make some delicious Chinese Malay dishes. Mrs.Amy is so cute. I loved learning the history of the people and making the dishes. Definitely worth it.

Fantastic, delicious course and market tour - 10/10 recommend!
Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Penang! Mr Mok and his wife Amy were super friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about Penang and Nyonya food/culture. We did the morning tour and learned a lot about life in Penang and the key people at the heart of its food scene. Amy then lead a fantastic course teaching us over a few hours how to cook some staples of Nyonya cuisine. The food was all delicious and from our photos and the recipes they provided, we feel confident (and look forward) to cooking this again!!
Thoroughly recommend for your trip to Penang - come hungry!

Amazing, delicious Nyonya Cooking Class!!
Probably our favourite thing we did in Penang! Definitely recommend as a way to try some great food and learn about Nyonya culture!
We did the morning Nyonya class, which entailed a morning market tour and breakfast with the infinitely knowledgable Mr Mok, followed by a few hours with his wife Amy, who taught us a number of Nyonya dishes
Mr Mok was passionate and gave a really interesting trip around all the stalls. We learned a huge amount about Penang from him and he answered all our questions, and gave us loads of recommendations for the rest of our stay and our onward travels to Ipoh.
Amy was also fantastic, taking us through everything and explaining how and why it was done. Our food was delicious and looked great - very happy with it. They also gave us all the recipes, which we feel confident we’d be able to cook back home!

A wonderful journey into the traditional Penang Nyonya cuisine and culture - not to be missed.
I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. This was not just a cookery class, but a journey into the history of the traditional Penang Nyonya cuisine, shared with us by two people who are passionate about their culinary and cultural heritage, Mr Mok and Miss Amie.
We took part as a family with two teenage boys - our boys loved learning new skills and trying these different foods.
The morning started with a in-depth tour of the local market with Simon and Mr Mok, tasting samples of local sweets, vegetables, herbs and fruits as we went, before sitting amongst locals in the market for a traditional breakfast. Every plate of food or drink came with a detailed explanation of the ingredients and culinary background.
Then up to the kitchen to start our cooking experience, with many of the ingredients having been bought by Mr Mok as we toured the market. Then for the next three hours we watched, learnt, chopped, stirred, fried, mixed under Miss Amy’s watchful and encouraging eye as we learnt how to make:
Chrysanthemum tea, spring rolls (popiah) , char koay teow, Curry Kapitan Chicken, Kaya, Pulut Tai Tai.
And then, once all the preparation was done, we sat down together to enjoy the fruits of our labour.
A very special and memorable experience, meticulously planned and beautifully delivered. Thank you to all the team.

Highly recommended, fun learning experience
Great half day out with an interesting market tour with Mr Mok who seems to know everyone at the market. Then on to cooking with Amy. We got to participate in a few things like cutting the vegetables for the spring rolls but then Amy, Mok and the helper finished off the “boring” tasks while we moved on to prep for the next dishes.
Make sure you come hungry as there’s plenty of food at lunch and you also get a light breakfast before the class starts.
Loads of photos, videos and recipes are shared after the class.

Very passionate and keen to share their culture
Mr Mok and Nonya Amy are very passionate about their heritage and it was a pleasure to let them share it with us. The market tour was interesting and informative which included morning tea and drinks. The food we prepared was delicious. We were provided with the recipes and many great tips for other places to eat and things to do in Penang.

Well package trip and wonderfully conducted
Had a wonderful time at the Penang Chiak cooking session! 🍳✨
What made it extra special was Mok sharing the fascinating history of Chowrasta Market. I honestly didn’t expect the session to include this little piece of Penang’s heritage, and it added so much more meaning to the experience.
Amy was fantastic—warm, patient and so good at guiding us through the cooking. The whole session was relaxed, enjoyable and filled with interesting stories, local flavours and plenty of fun.
A great way to experience Penang beyond just the food. Highly recommended! ❤️
