Everything worked as planned. Train tickets from Ella to Nanu Oya arrived early. Tickets to/from Ella are hard to get and are often sold out but this was easy, even the tickets are slightly more expensive than from Sri Lankan railways.
We paid at least 4 times the actual price of the tickets way in advance for the train trip. We had all the emails confirming the trip and explained we would get the actual tickets on the morning. We woke up to find they had been cancelled siting a ‘technical error’. We rushed to the train ticket office when it opened to see if we could get any tickets that day, there were only unreserved ones. Very disappointingly we had to get a car instead.
We recommend to book atleast 32 days in advance to face all these sudden faults. Please don't book it if you have only few hours left. Thank you
The train journey is beautiful, and a real recommendation. I was too late/didn't get tickets online (tickets become available exactly 1 month in advance and are then bought up en masse), so I was willing to pay 4 times as much per ticket on Viator. With the thought that the operator could arrange tickets via via and charged an extra surcharge for that. No problem, I give everyone their bread. This tour offered the perfect (2nd class) tickets, so I booked quickly. Communication went fine at first: my tickets would be emailed + WhatsApp on the day of departure. But in the days before I received warnings: because I had bought the Viator tickets after the first round of ticket sales, it was not guaranteed that I would get tickets now. That is hidden somewhere in the terms and conditions, but is made very clear beforehand. The tickets can be a different class, or even at a different time/day! And that caused me concern, because the train journey was part of our total tour and the hotels were already booked. Ultimately, the operator in the second round of ticket sales (local/online is not clear to me) managed to buy reserved seats, and we were divided between the 2nd class (1 seat) and the 1st class (4 seats). All in all, this experience was not the tour we expected. The question is whether the price can quadruple if the result is: Sorry, it didn't work, you just have to travel tomorrow (according to the conditions and non-cancellable).
We recommend to book atleast 32 days in advance to get preferred seat class. If your reservation making after, we have to get seats based on availability. Please check the tour page, its clearly mention in there. Still we arranged you First Class seats when you paid for Second Class tickets.

We purchased train tickets from Ella to Nanu oya via Viator since we couldn't book tickets directly through the Sri Lankan railway website. We were sent an email of confirmation. A day before travel the tour operator sends a message that tickets are not confirmed until 0430 the day of travel. The day of travel the tour operator states they weren't able to get the tickets and had to cancel. For us this experience was highly stressful. (Was anxious about tickets so couldn't really sleep) The tour operator did let us know we could get unreserved tickets however this is not the experience we want. Nanu oya was not our final destination. We already had a car booked there to take us to Kandy and now we're scrambling to find other transportation to take us to Nanu oya. I would not recommend buying through them. This not knowing that tickets are not confirmed when you buy them should have been clearly communicated through their booking page in Viator
You need to understand that tickets not confirmed until the second and final booking window if you haven't make an inquiry one month in advance. We have clearly mentioned this on our tour page. Also we emailed you this well in advance. If you came to railway station and use manual procedure, you could have get seats and travel in the train. Making your own assumptions and not following the instructions made your plan got awful. Please don't blame us for it. Thank you
Great experience, beautiful scenery. Something you should do once. Windows required cleaning to be able to photograph. Comfortable air conditioned carriage in 1st class.
Train great - 3rd class most room. Don't buy 3rd party train tickets. I bought 2nd class unreserved for 300lkr per ticket at train station 1hr before- easy..then moved to 3rd class as more room. Due to pressure (long story) i bought 2x 3rd party tickets for $66AUD - when i realised I booked wrong direction they wouldn't cancel / any refund. Trust me get to station early, buy your own ticket and hop on.
Tickets delivered by email a couple of weeks before the train departure date. Excellent and clear communication. I recommend taking reserved third class tickets because in first and second class they keep their doors closed. However if you are in second class you can always ask some attendant if they can open the door for you to take videos or photos while you are clinging outside. Of course you have to give a tip, 2 or 3 euros are also fine
Super nice experience. Clear instructions and good seating. The tickets were also neatly displayed in the app and email.
Absolute rip-off The train ride is nice, but we were totally ripped off. Instead of 7000 rupies we paid 70€
You are commenting here without knowing the competition to have reserved seats. If you couldn't get it 30 days in advance, you will be standing over few hours with unreserved tickets issuing on the day from railway station's counter. You had a fantastic ride because of this service. Otherwise you will end up with packed compartment with so many people. So what would you suggest? Waiting for last day or have them pre booked to avoid trouble.
