Itinerary
Xunantunich is one of Belize’s most impressive Maya sites, once home to powerful rulers and remarkable discoveries—including Belize’s largest Maya royal tomb found in 2016. Your journey starts in San Jose Succotz, where you’ll cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry before arriving at the ancient city. The site is dominated by El Castillo, a 130-foot pyramid dedicated to the Maya Sun God and the second-tallest Maya structure in Belize. Climb to the top for panoramic views stretching to the Guatemala border, and watch for howler monkeys and other wildlife along the way. The name “Xunantunich,” meaning “Stone Woman,” comes from a legend of a mysterious female figure once seen near the site. Even if you’re new to Maya history, Untame Belize’s expert guides will bring the ruins, culture, and stories to life.

This is an absolute must do! Be sure to ask for Edgar. The extent of his knowledge as a tour guide but more importantly through his formal education offers extensive insight into the Mayan culture and history. The fact that he’s humorous also helps to keep things lively. He speaks Spanish and English. For your lunch selection I recommend Denny’s. If you eat pork try the pubil which is slow roasted and much like ropa vieja/pulled pork. The stop at San Ignacio will give you tremendous insight into how the locals shop and eat. One tip- you will be climbing the ruins so wear appropriate shoes, apply sunblock, carry water and bring your sunglasses.
Thank you so much for choosing Untame Belize and for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review! We’re thrilled to hear Edgar made such a positive impact on your experience. His passion, knowledge of Maya history and culture, and sense of humor truly make every tour memorable. We’re also glad you enjoyed exploring San Ignacio and the local cuisine. We appreciate your recommendations and hope to welcome you back to Belize for another unforgettable adventure soon!
