João Matos was our guide for the Évora walking tour that included the Chapel of Bones, and he was simply outstanding. His intellect, humor, and skill at keeping everyone engaged made this the best European tour we’ve ever taken. João didn’t just recite facts—he brought Évora’s history to life with vivid stories, clever jokes, and thoughtful commentary on the city’s architecture, culture, and people. What truly set him apart was his ability to question and involve the group, prompting us to think deeper and stay fully engaged throughout the tour. He went far beyond the role of a normal guide. When we asked questions that even touched on an unrelated tour we’d done elsewhere, João not only answered thoughtfully but also did additional research on the spot to give us accurate, detailed information. That level of curiosity, care, and intellectual rigor is rare. João Matos sets the bar for what a tour can be at the highest level. If you’re in Évora, book a tour with him—you’ll leave with a richer understanding of the city and a memorable experience.

Our tour guide, João, was very kind, informative, and did a great job telling us the history of Evora. The walking was easy, with less stairs and hills than other city tours we have done. Evora is beautiful, and the Chapel of Bones was the highlight for our group. The small shopping area that João recommended was perfect for getting authentic souvenirs after the tour. We had been in Lisbon the day before, and are so glad we took the half day to explore and enjoy the much more quiet and quaint feel that Evora has. Thank you again, João!

We really enjoyed our walking tour of Évora! Our guide was very personable and incredibly knowledgeable. He has a master’s degree in Cultural Heritage Studies from the University of Évora, and it definitely showed—he had so much to share about the history, culture, and architecture of the city. We learned a ton and came away with a much better understanding of Évora and its history. A great way to get to know the city!

It was an incredible tour with Paulo, who knew history of Evora and Portugal and the world in general! He was interesting, witty and funny, the time passed all too quickly! I would rate this as one of the best tours of all time! He even recommended restaurants, which we enjoyed after the tour! Thanks for a great morning!

Daniel was our guide and he was excellent. Perfect English and he is in a graduate program at Evora university in history. He is a native of Evora and loves his city. We did the walking tour of Evora with him and he was flexible and took us to the historical sites that we wanted to see. We are experienced Europe travelers and have seen too many cathedrals and he understood. We highly recommend him if you are touring in Evora. And also recommend the hotel pestana pousada convents de Evora. It is in a 500 yr old monastery and adjacent to the Roman temple. Walking distance to 30 restaurants.
