Itinerary

Pass by

Depart from anywhere in the Greater Lisbon area on this no-rush private tour. Our journey begins towards Tomar, the greatest home of Templar history in Portugal. A comfortable 90-minute highway ride awaits you and this will be the longest drive of the day. No worries, there's always room for a rest stop. Let's go!

Admission included120 min

On arrival to Tomar we will visit its jewels, namely the Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ. As well as other beauties, you'll have the chance to see the Charola, which is one of the best of the rare examples of a circular church in the world, and to see the Janela do Capítulo window, which in the originality of its decorative work depicts in art the greatness of the kingdom of Portugal at the time of the Discoveries. As was the criterion for being classified as a World Heritage Site, the site had to be representative of a masterpiece of humanity's creative genius.

30 min

We leave the castle and the convent and go to stroll and wind through some of the streets of the Historic Center of Tomar to discover more historical and Templar references, learn how the local community still vibrates with Templar culture and feel the pleasantness of the river and the picturesque corners of the town.

Pass by

(OPTIONAL) It's lunchtime. Although it is not included in the tour program, we have set aside time in the program for it. We'll take care of these details once you've booked the tour.

Admission included90 min

Batalha follows. We go straight to the Monastery, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful works of Portuguese and European architecture. It is a wonder to behold. This exceptional architectural ensemble was the result of a promise made by King João I in gratitude for his victory at Aljubarrota, a battle fought at the end of the 14th century, which guaranteed Portugal's independence. You can imagine that the work took more than 150 years, resulting in an architecturally impressive building of unparalleled beauty that deserves to be seen at least once in a lifetime and is reason enough to have been classified as a World Heritage Site for more than 40 years.

Admission included90 min

Now on to Alcobaça. On arrival, we'll take an easy stroll through the charming historic center, along the rivers and even taste the sweet “cornucópias”, a typical and award-winning sweet. Then we'll visit the 12th century Alcobaça Monastery, a UNESCO heritage site. If you don't feel like visiting all the Monastery, we'll at least visit the impressive Gothic royal abbey where you'll discover two carved stone tombs, probably the most beautiful you've ever seen, and learn about a beautiful but tragic love story. Without a doubt, a must-see.

30 min

(TASTING) To go to Alcobaça and not try traditional and ancient pastries would be a serious sin. Why you'll taste the sweet "cornucópias", a typical and award-winning pastry. Just enjoy it. It's on us.

Pass by

It's time to head back to Lisbon. But if we still have time and you feel like it, we can make a short detour to visit the medieval town of Óbidos. Our guide will be happy to show you around this beautiful and picturesque town with its cobbled streets, curious stores and 12th century castle. It's up to you. We're here for you. The journey takes between 10 and 12 hours, depending on the optional visits you make and whether you decide to have lunch on site. As a matter of transparency, we would like to inform you that in addition to the added time of 6 hours given to the attractions listed in the itinerary, the remaining 4 to 6 hours announced refer to: 4 hours for the total travel time, and the other 2 hours for the total time of the moments listed as optional and lunch. By the way... we'd like you to know that by choosing us you're choosing a free tour for children under 11 and a 100% sustainable car trip, as all GHG emissions generated are fully offset.

Review of Marco as our guide

Marco was extremely informative and knowledgeable about the history of Portugal especially as it related to the places we visited (Tomar, Batalha and Alcobaca). He was easy to converse with and has a good sense of humour. We learned far more than we would have done if we had done it by ourselves and would recommend Marco as a guide to anyone visiting Portugal.

Operator response

Thank you very much. Very happy that you enjoyed the tour and that Marco, as a guide, elevated the experience and took the discovery of these splendid places to another level of learning. Thank you for your curiosity and for the great recommendation.

An amazing Day!!!

n amazing day visiting Tomar, Batalha & Alcobaça!!! Our day started off by being greeted by our guide for the day. Marco was welcoming and thoughtful. He arrived in a beautiful black Volvo. The car was equipped with complimentary snacks and bottled waters. Which is perfect for a 10 hour day. With Marco’s extensive knowledgeable of the regions history, he painted a beautiful picture for us to envision what was. We enjoyed each city individually to its fullest, never once did we feel rushed. Many times he offered to be our photographer without hesitation. He even treated us to one of Tomar’s local dessert. As the day progressed it felt like we were on an outing with an old friend. We talked, laughed and joked. He introduced us to our first Portuguese cuisine. A meal that was already pre ordered for us. I understand that could be a little intimidating, but in our case, had it not been for Marco pre-ordering we may had never tried it on our own. The restaurant he chose was absolutely perfect. We highly recommend this company and tour to everyone.

We had a fantastic experience on the Tomar, and Alcobaça UNESCO private tour. WE were making our way up to Porto and made these stops along the way. Traveling with the Amity Family made all the difference—their deep knowledge, thoughtful storytelling, and warm hospitality brought Portugal’s rich history to life in a way we couldn’t have experienced on our own.

Operator response

Thank you very much for your rate and wonderful review. It was a real pleasure for me to have had the opportunity to take such a lovely and fun family to see some of the most beautiful sites in Portugal.
