Best Templar tour guide in Tomar!

Our guide Darren was extremely knowledgeable and welcomed tough questions. I appreciate that he has really done his homework, is certified in the subject and could distinguish between folklore/false information and tell us was is truly documented history and what is just speculative. He took our time with us and was very gracious. It was also really nice to have a native English speaker. Very comfortable car and we did not feel rushed. If you want someone who really knows the history and also the best spots in Tomar, this is your guy.

Worth every Euro

Our recent six-day visit to Tomar with Darren Keohane of Templar Knights Tours was an outstanding experience from beginning to end. As members of OCMTH, we were particularly interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the Knights Templar, the foundation of Tomar and the Order of Christ. Darren brought that history to life with knowledge, enthusiasm and a genuine respect for the subject. Rather than simply reciting dates and names, he connected the architecture, landscape and people behind each site. At the Convent of Christ, Tomar Castle and the Charola, he explained how the complex developed from a Templar stronghold into the headquarters of the Order of Christ. His interpretation helped us understand the spiritual, military and political importance of the site, as well as the symbolism that can easily be missed without an experienced guide. Our visits to Santa Maria do Olival, the medieval synagogue, the historic centre of Tomar, the Pegões Aqueduct and Almourol Castle were equally informative. Darren placed each location within the wider story of medieval Portugal, showing how the Templars helped defend and shape the young kingdom. One of Darren’s greatest strengths is his ability to distinguish documented history from later legend. He never allowed an entertaining story to replace the evidence, but he presented the facts in a lively and accessible way. His knowledge is extensive, yet his tours never feel like a lecture. He was also generous with his time, patient with questions and attentive to the interests of our group. Over six days, he gave us a far richer appreciation of Tomar and its Templar heritage than we could ever have gained by visiting the monuments alone. For anyone with an interest in the Knights Templar, the Order of Christ, medieval Portugal or the history of Tomar, we would strongly recommend Darren and Templar Knights Tours. His expertise transformed an already remarkable destination into a memorable historical journey.

Hi Andy. Thank you so much for this wonderful review! It was an absolute privilege hosting you and your fellow OCMTH members in Tomar for the Festa Templária. When guiding fellow students of Templar history, the conversations are always far deeper and more rewarding. I truly appreciated your group's enthusiasm, great questions, and shared passion for separating the true, documented history from the legends. Exploring the Charola, Almourol Castle, and the historic centre with people who genuinely appreciate the nuances of the Order of Christ made those six days just as memorable for me as I hope they were for you. You are welcome back to Tomar anytime. Warm regards,

Epic history sketched before your eyes

A profound, thorough and insightful journey into the heart of Templar Portugal. History cannot be understood unless it is told well. Here, Darren excels in telling the Templar story. With a value far exceeding the cost, history came to life before my eyes in exploring the pivotal sights which shaped how Portugal is today. Approachable and knowledgeable, a couple of days has given me the foundations to the epic tale of Gualdim Pais, but has eagerly whet my appetite to come back for more. I cannot wait enough for the next visit!

Reviews like yours mean a great deal because my aim is not simply to show visitors the monuments of Tomar, but to bring the people, events and stories behind them to life. I'm delighted that you found the experience both insightful and worthwhile, and that it has inspired you to delve even deeper into the epic story of Gualdim Pais, the Templars, and Portugal's extraordinary medieval heritage. I look forward to welcoming you back to Tomar for the next chapter of the story. Thank you once again for your kind words and for choosing Templar Knights Tours. Warm regards,

Awesome visit to Almoural and Convent

Darren is extremely knowledgeable about the Templars and their history and influence. He can talk to all levels of people and make it understandable. Truly a learning experience. Even though the castle was closed we visited Almoural followed by the Convent of Christ. One member of our group is blind and he did very well at guiding and helping him “visualize” the castle and convent.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your kind review Kate. I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the tour and found the history of the Templars engaging and accessible. Although the castle was unexpectedly closed, I'm glad we were able to adapt the itinerary and make the most of the day with visits to Almourol Castle and the Convent of Christ. These sites offer such a unique insight into the Templars' legacy in Portugal. It was also a pleasure to assist your group member who is blind. Helping visitors experience these remarkable places in a meaningful way is very important to me, and I'm pleased that the descriptions and guidance helped bring the castle and convent to life. Thank you again for your thoughtful feedback, and I hope to welcome you back to Tomar in the future.

Amazing Fund of Knowledge

Darren was a fabulous guide for our tour of Knights Templar sites. Because the castle in Tomar is closed for renovations, he drove us to Almoural Castle instead. He has an amazing fund of knowledge about the Knights and the history of Portugal, and teaches with an infectious enthusiasm. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour!

Operator response

Best 2 days in Portugal

Darren gave us the best 2 days we had in Portugal! On the first day, we visited Tomar Castle and convents and several other sites around Tomar as well as a drive to Almourol Castle. We asked to add a tour of a winery, so he arranged a visit Casal das Freiras in the afternoon. Rita, took us around her family farm, explained the history of the property before her family became the owner's generations ago, growing and making wine and olive oil, then we had the BEST wine in Portugal with a meat and cheese board which had estate made jams too! Darren has extensive knowledge of the Templars and Order of Christ which gave an interesting layer to Tomar's history that was fascinating. The second day started with lunch at a locally owned restaurant with amazing food. Then off to Sintra with a stop in Obidos. Darren walked the walls and streets of the medieval city with us, and we even found Templar markings on a medieval church! Darren went above and beyond to show us the sites and history of Tomar and areas around Tomar!

Operator response

Thank you so much Kelli. You were fantastic guests and thank you so much for taking the time to write this. It was a real pleasure showing you Tomar and the surrounding sites, and I’m really glad the Templar history and the wider region added something meaningful to your experience. Almourol, Sintra, and Óbidos are very different places, but it’s great to hear they all connected well for you. Casal das Freiras is one of those special stops for me too, so I’m happy you enjoyed it and the time with Rita on the farm. All the best, and you’re welcome back anytime.

THIS is the guide and tour company you want! Darren has so much knowledge of the Knights Templar and the history of Tomar and Portugal. He has a great ability to pass on all his knowledge in a way that makes it understandable and enjoyable. It was a fun tour that is adaptable; ours went to several sites.
