Itinerary
Please meet your guide at the designated meeting point for a prompt early morning departure. By starting our journey ahead of the rush, we’ll ensure you beat the heavy crowds and enjoy a much cooler, more serene experience at the sites. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to ensure a smooth start to your adventure.
Step back in time at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most evocative places on Earth. Frozen in time by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, this vast site offers a unique window into ancient Roman life. Walk through remarkably preserved streets, explore opulent villas adorned with vibrant frescoes, and marvel at the majestic temples and theaters that once formed the heart of this thriving city.
Enter the city through Porta Marina, the most monumental of Pompeii’s seven gates. Walk in through this ancient gateway, originally designed for travelers arriving from the sea, and explore with your guide the impressive double-arch structure that separated pedestrians from carriages. As you pass through these massive stone walls, you’ll immediately feel the grandeur of the Roman Empire welcoming you into the streets of the past.
Step into the Forum, the monumental heart of ancient Pompeii. Explore with your guide the remains of the city's grandest temples and public buildings that once buzzed with political and commercial life. Walk in the footsteps of Roman citizens across this expansive square, where you can admire the iconic silhouette of Mt. Vesuvius looming in the distance—the perfect spot to capture the essence of this frozen city.
The Macellum of Pompeii was located on the Forum and as the provision market of Pompeii was one of the focal points of the ancient city. The building was constructed in several phases. When the earthquake of 62 CE destroyed large parts of Pompeii, the Macellum was also damaged.
The Forum Baths are located behind the Temple of Jupiter and date back to the years immediately after the founding of the colony of veterans by General Silla (80 BC). Women's and men's quarters had separate entrances. The men's section presents an apodyterium (dressing room), used also as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths) and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths were heavily damaged during the earthquake of 62 AD.
Dominated by the Vesuvius with its statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, the temple was the Capitolium, similar to the one located in the Ancient Rome. The statues were highly placed to be visible to those passing in the Forum.
The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for "brothel". The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande.
The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, which depicts the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city's elite.
Via dell’Abbondanza was the ancient main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, which ran across the city in the direction east/west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. In ancient times the street was crowded and noisy with many shops, workshops ("officinae”), cafes, snack-bars and restaurants for food and drink.
The Basilica is the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice
As we make our way toward the theaters, we will walk through the moving Garden of the Fugitives. Explore with your guide this solemn site, where you can see the plaster casts of 13 victims frozen in their final moments while attempting to escape the eruption. It is a powerful and reflective path that leads us directly into the heart of the city’s cultural district.
The Large Theater of Pompeii was built from the Romans on the slope of a hill located in the area; they took advantage of the natural depression of the mountain to create a majesty auditorium divided into 5 sectors. On the stage were played tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions.
A you exit from the Archeological Park of Pompeii, enjoy free time for lunch between your explorations. Whether you choose to grab a quick traditional snack or sit down at a local restaurant. This is the perfect moment to relax and recharge before we head toward the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius.
Reach the crater's edge at 1.280 mt to admire a breathtaking panorama on the Gulf of Naples. The surface of the path is uneven, but it' ll be well worth it. Following the devastating eruption, it was named after the Roman God of the Flame and Metal Forgery – Vulcan.
Walk in the clouds as you reach the summit of Mt. Vesuvius and explore with your guide the rim of the great crater. From this incredible vantage point, you will be rewarded with a world-class view overlooking the Bay of Naples. Marvel at the breathtaking panorama of the sparkling Mediterranean, the city below, and the distant islands of Capri and Ischia, all from the top of Europe’s most famous volcano.
After an unforgettable day of history and heights, settle into your comfortable coach for the return trip to Napples. Explore with your guide the final highlights of the journey as you descend the volcanic slopes, enjoying one last view overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is the perfect time to unwind, review your photos, and relax as we bring you back to your original departure point.

Roberta our guide was excellent 👌 pick up and drop off easy, relaxed, small group of 7, in depth guided tour of the best of Pompeii and a trek up Vesuvius. Enjoy a limoncello at the crater with views of the Amalfi Coast.
Angela (tour guide) and Andrea (driver) were great. Very friendly, and very good at what they do. The trip is a lot of activity. There is a lot of walking and you cover a lot of ground, so stay hydrated and bring your walking shoes. We are pretty active and were tired at the end, but it was well worth it. Great way to see both Pompeii (which is much larger than I expected) and the amazing crater of Vesuvius with wonderful surrounding views. 10/10 would recommend.
A great way to see Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. The guide Angela was excellent, spoke excellent English and she kept the trip on track, explaining things and making sure everyone had a great time. The driver Andrea was incredible - manoeuvring that coach up and down those roads was no mean feat! Highly recommended to learn more about Pompeii, the guide there was very knowledgeable and showed us all the best places. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, and take plenty of water in summer. The hike up the volcano is not for the faint hearted and the terrain underfoot was not conducive to my sandals - trainers all the way.
Pompeii is very pretty, the problem is the heat in August. And doing the climb up Vesuvius at noon, it is very hot..
It was very hot and our tour guide was doing her best to avoid other groups and lines. As a result of her trying to beat the crowds and most popular sights, the tour seemed a little rushed and disjointed. I did not feel like we got a great overview or storytelling of Pompeii itself. She allocated a full hour for lunch to allow us to cool off, even though I would’ve preferred to see some of the more popular sights. If we had a better storyteller guide, the experience would’ve been so much more impactful. I don’t know that she really contributed much to the Pompeii experience. Mount Vesuvius was cool and we were left to our own devices to explore the volcano. The bus was comfortable and nicely air-conditioned.
Dear Traveler, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the comfort of our air-conditioned bus and the trip up to Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii during the peak summer heat can be quite challenging. Our guides often have to make real-time decisions to navigate around massive crowds, long lines, and high temperatures to protect the group's well-being. However, we understand your preference for seeing specific major highlights and experiencing a more structured historical narrative. We take your notes about the pacing, lunch duration, and storytelling very seriously, and we will discuss them with our team to better balance crowd avoidance with a thorough historical overview. We truly appreciate your insights and hope to welcome you again under cooler skies for an even better experience. Warm regards, The IAMME IA! Gray Line Team
The excursion was a good way to see two big landmarks outside of the Napoli. There was a separate guide for Pompeii and directions/transportation for hiking Vesuvius. The guide provided insight on the way to the mountain as well.
Organisation of the tour is perfect. Guide, Roberta, is wonderful. Knows a lot and tells a lot, with humor

Incredible tour, but what made it even more interesting was the guide, Guglielmo! An exquisite person who, besides being very competent, was very nice and made us appreciate every minute there at the summit!
Very enjoyable. Knowledgeable guide.
