Itinerary
Step into the ultimate symbol of 19th-century romanticism at Pena Palace, perched at the very top of the Sintra mountains. With your included "Essential Visit" ticket, our exploration encompasses the vibrantly colored palace terraces, the stunning architecture, and the lush surrounding park and gardens. Inside, your guided visit is specifically dedicated to the New Palace—King Ferdinand II's eccentric summer residence. Here, you will discover hidden architectural details, rich royal history, and sweeping panoramic views that stretch all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, while bypassing the other interior sections of the building.
Optional walking the gardens
Walk the ancient stone ramparts of this 8th-century fortress. Perched high above the clouds, it offers the most spectacular panoramic views of the Sintra mountains and the Atlantic coastline. A true journey into medieval military history.
Enjoy free time and a guided stroll through the village’s medieval heart. Admire the traditional architecture, explore local shops, and taste the famous "Travesseiros" pastries in the center of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Uncover the mysteries of Sintra’s most enigmatic estate. Your guided visit includes the famous "Initiation Well," secret underground tunnels, and lush gardens filled with Masonic and Templar symbolism.
A scenic drive past the elegant 18th-century Seteais Palace, known for its neoclassical architecture and beautiful gardens overlooking the valley.
Here is the description for Monserrate, specifically tailored for a drive-by photo stop after passing Seteais. Monserrate Palace & Park Following our passage by Seteais, we slow down for a photo opportunity at the exuberant Monserrate Palace. This 19th-century masterpiece is an architectural jewel of the Romantic era, blending Gothic, Indian, and Moorish influences into a stunning "Orientalist" design. Surrounded by one of Portugal’s richest botanical gardens, the palace’s intricate stone carvings and terracotta domes make it one of the most unique and photogenic sites in the Sintra hills.

An incredible experience!! Lots of walking but we were ready for it!! Our guide, Natacha, was amazing, full of knowledge, so comfortable to talk with and so well organized
The tour helped make it a stress free day to Sintra for my family of preteens to 70 year olds. Natacha was wonderful in making sure everything went smoothly and tailoring information and the day to our group. It helps when transportation from hotel back to hotel iland between attractions is taken care of. The tickets and schedule is taken of. I can't imagine experiencing Sintra otherwise.
Five stars for Natacha! Incredibly knowledgeable about Sintra's history and so genuinely warm and welcoming. She rolled with whatever the day threw at us and kept everything relaxed and fun. If you're touring Pena, the Moorish Castle, and Regaleira, you want her as your guide.
Thank you for such warm words — I'm delighted the day felt easy and personal, even with everything Sintra throws at a full day like that. That mix of history and a genuine welcome is exactly what we try to bring to that route, so it's good to know it came through. Thank you again, and I hope you're back in Portugal again one day. Rui
Very great experience with a lot of information on each stop we did. Beautiful views and amazing history. Lots of walking and steps.
Thank you, Marilyn — Sintra does ask a lot of your legs, and this is our most complete itinerary of Sintra, so it is naturally the most demanding physically. But it tends to reward every step. Glad the history and the views made it worthwhile. Hope to welcome you back one day. Rui
Our guide, Marta, is warm, welcoming and a great storyteller. She is fabulous for her vast knowledge of all the places she showed us but just as important, for her enthusiasm for discovery, sense of humor, and energy. And she deeply loves her country. Before you know it, you start to feel it, too. All 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed our day with her!
Thank you, Suzanne — this is a beautiful thing to read. Sintra has a way of getting under your skin, and it's always special when a group leaves not just having seen the places, but having felt something about them. That's really what we hope for. So glad all five of you had a good day. Rui
Busy day. Large crowds, lots of steps to climb. Experienced guide is essential. Be prepared to wait in queues
Thank you for the honest feedback. Sintra on a busy day is a real test of patience, and the queues at Pena are something we always try to work around with timing and sequencing. On this particular occasion, there were some internal works taking place inside the palace that caused unexpected delays — something outside anyone's control, but no less frustrating for it. We appreciate you flagging it, and hope the experience as a whole still gave you a real sense of what makes Sintra so special. Rui
Wow! A full and fun-filled day in Sentra with Natacha. Very informative time and would do it again.
Thank you, Jeff — Sintra has a way of packing a lot into one day, and we're glad it all felt enjoyable rather than overwhelming. Hope it wasn't the last time.
We had a good time, our guide Marta was very helpful, knowledgeable, organized & very accommodating to our walking speed being “seniors” 👍She even brought us to Cabo de Roca even though it was not in our itinerary. Excellent job, highly recommended 👏👏👏
Thank you, Marilyn — Sintra at the right pace is a very different experience, and Cabo da Roca is one of those places that earns its detour every time. The westernmost point of continental Europe deserves a moment, and we're glad there was room in the day for it. Hope you both enjoyed every step. Rui
Our guid Rui was excellent. He is from Sintra so he knew the places to see and gave history of the monuments, castles and palaces.
Thank you, Vipul — Sintra is a place I grew up in, and it never loses its ability to surprise even those who know it well. Glad the day gave you a real sense of its history and character. Hope to welcome you back one day. Rui
We engaged Rui Catalao for a tour of Sintra and the palaces on July 5th via Viator. Leading up to the excursion, Rui maintained constant communication through messaging to confirm all the details for our day. On the morning of the tour, he arrived at our hotel 15 minutes early. Our group consisted of 10 people, and we were pleasantly surprised when two Mercedes vans arrived—much more comfortable compared to our previous excursions to Porto, Berlengas Island, and around Lisbon, which were all in a single, and rather cramped, van. Rui Catalao and his partner, Hugo (who drove the second van), kept us informed throughout the day, sharing fascinating history and details about Sintra. Rui personally accompanied us on the trek through the gardens and up to the palace. Meanwhile, Hugo stayed behind with my mother-in-law, who was unable to make the walk. He kept her entertained with his humor until we rejoined them at the palace tour. For lunch, Rui took us to a fantastic local restaurant. "Sabores de Sintra" is an unassuming restaurant from the front door. It has an amazing open air garden seating in the back. Food was delicious as well. We visited the following sites that day: Historic Center of Sintra & National Palace of Sintra Moorish Castle National Palace of Pena Quinta da Regaleira Villa Sassetti Overall, this was the best excursion we experienced in Portugal. Berlengas island was a close second! We felt very safe and comfortable with Rui Catalao and Hugo, and we plan to request their services for all of our days on our next trip to Portugal.
