San Diego: 3 Hour Whale Watch Cruise with Legacy Whale Watch

Itinerary

Pass by

We will depart from the dock and generally see California Sea Lions very quickly. We usually see quite a few varieties of sea bird before we leave the bay as well. We will head out into open ocean in search of whales, dolphins, other mammals and sea birds.

Pass by

Quivira Basin (Mission Bay) You’ll depart from Quivira Basin, one of the busiest boating hubs in Mission Bay. As you cruise out toward the open ocean, you’ll pass sportfishing boats, sailing vessels, and charter yachts preparing for their own adventures. This harbor will serve as your gateway to the Pacific.

Pass by

Dog Beach You’ll soon cruise past Dog Beach, one of the most famous off-leash dog beaches in the country. As you pass by, you’ll often see dogs racing across the sand, chasing balls, and splashing through the surf while their owners cheer them on. It’s one of San Diego’s most joyful stretches of coastline.

Pass by

San Diego River Mouth You’ll pass the mouth of the San Diego River, which travels all the way from the mountains east of the city before reaching the Pacific here. Where the river meets the ocean, you’ll find a rich habitat that attracts birds, fish, and other wildlife. This meeting of fresh and salt water supports a surprising amount of life.

Pass by

Ocean Beach You’ll cruise alongside Ocean Beach, a classic Southern California surf town known for its laid-back personality. As you pass by, you’ll see colorful shops, palm-lined streets, and surfers heading out to catch waves. This neighborhood keeps a vintage beach-town spirit alive.

Pass by

Ocean Beach Pier You’ll glide past the Ocean Beach Pier, which stretches nearly 2,000 feet out into the Pacific. As you pass, you’ll see fishermen casting lines while seabirds soar overhead and surfers ride waves nearby. The pier stands as one of the longest concrete piers on the West Coast.

Pass by

Mission Beach You’ll cruise along Mission Beach, a lively stretch of sand between the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay. From the water, you’ll see the famous boardwalk where cyclists, skaters, and beachgoers gather throughout the day. This beach often buzzes with energy and sunshine.

Pass by

Belmont Park You’ll spot the historic Giant Dipper roller coaster rising above the shoreline at Belmont Park. This wooden coaster has thrilled riders since 1925 and remains one of the few seaside roller coasters still operating in the United States. From the ocean, you’ll get one of the best views of this San Diego landmark.

Pass by

Pacific Beach You’ll pass Pacific Beach, known locally as “PB,” one of San Diego’s most vibrant beach communities. As you cruise by, you’ll notice wide sandy beaches, steady surf, and a busy boardwalk full of activity. Surfers and sun-seekers gather here year-round.

Pass by

Crystal Pier You’ll soon see Crystal Pier extending out over the water. This pier stands out because small cottages sit right on top of it, allowing visitors to stay overnight above the waves. It’s one of the most unique and photographed places along the San Diego coastline.

Pass by

La Jolla Coastline You’ll approach the beautiful coastline of La Jolla, often called the “Jewel of San Diego.” As you cruise along these dramatic cliffs and clear blue waters, you’ll enter one of the richest marine habitats in Southern California. Dolphins, sea lions, seabirds, and even whales frequently travel through these waters.

Pass by

Sunset Cliffs You’ll see the rugged bluffs of Sunset Cliffs rising dramatically from the ocean. Over thousands of years, waves have carved these sandstone cliffs into sea caves, arches, and steep drop-offs. This coastline offers some of the most spectacular sunset views in San Diego.

Pass by

Point Loma You’ll round Point Loma, the peninsula that forms the natural barrier protecting San Diego Bay. As you pass this dramatic headland, you’ll see how it has guided sailors into the harbor for centuries. This landmark has played a key role in San Diego’s maritime history.

Pass by

Point Loma Lighthouse High on the cliffs above you, you’ll spot the historic Point Loma Lighthouse. Built in 1855, it helped guide ships safely into San Diego Bay during California’s early days. Today it stands within Cabrillo National Monument and continues to symbolize San Diego’s long connection to the sea.

I would go again

The staff were friendly and informative. It's amazing to see so many of these animals in their own habitat.

Avoid

No whales. No dolphins. Rough waters, boat had those pressure point bracelets you could “rent.” Passengers were advised to go to the back of the boat and “feed the fishes” if they needed to throw up, because the bathroom is wet and smelly and would not improve their situation. Many people were sick. EMTs arrived at the end of the trip to help one person needing medical attention. They then gave out vouchers for free trip lol. As if…

Kind of rough…

The crew was great but the conditions were poor. Limited outdoor seating, rough water, lots of people seasick, no whales, but we saw some fun dolphins.

Beyond expectations

Beautiful day, excellent narration, smooth ride. We saw four fin whales over and over again - really remarkable! On our way back, a school of dolphins swam right by our boat and one leapt out of the water right by us. It was magical. Well worth it, highly recommend.

Great Whale Watching, friendly staff

My wife and I had a great experience on this Whale watching tour. We were lucky enough to spot a “feeding frenzy” where we saw two humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions and even albatross. The whale breached once which apparently is rare - awesome! Staff was very friendly and great experience for the price.
