Our driver picks you up from your accommodation in Luxor and drive in about 1 hour to Qena where Dendera temples is located. Enjoy a 2 hour visit to Dendera, the entire Dendera complex covers about 40,000 square meters and is surrounded by a large, enclosed wall of mud. The main building in the complex is the Temple of Hathor. The existing structure began construction in the late Ptolemaic period at the time of Ptolemy Auletes in July 54 BCE and the colonnaded hall was built in Roman times under Tiberius. Depictions of Cleopatra VI appearing on temple walls are prime examples of Ptolemaic Egyptian art. And there are vivid scenes in which the Roman Emperor Trajan pays tribute to the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor. From Qena it's about a 1 hour drive back to Luxor

I had the best time taking a private guide and driver around the major temples. As a solo female traveller i was really looked after by the staff. Nothing was to much trouble and Yassin was trustworthy and I always felt safe. I took the guide to Valley of the Kings, Tombs of the Nobles and Medinet Habu. A visit to Karnak temple was indescribable! After a brilliant tour I booked dendara with Far and Beyond and Traditional Felucca sailing on the Nile.
I was collected at 8 am by the same driver who took me on another tour which made me feel safe and I liked that the company had considered careful continuity. I was accompanied by Hamdy, a very knowledgeable, patient and insightful guide who never tired of my constant questions! The drive along the Nile canals in the local province was beautiful , it was harvest season. It was suggested we stop for the best local felafel sandwich and it was the best felafel of my life! Prior to entering The Temple of Hathor, Hamdy gave a full explanation of the site, what to look out for that is special to that Temple. He gave me the options for the ‘extra’ the crypts and advised me on how to handle others who like to ad hoc guide and take tips. This info was invaluable a s a solo traveler. Handy stayed close but was aware enough to give me my own space to explore. The temple is an absolute must see. It is so unique with the colour and brings together in context through history and heirogylpic rendering its unique place in the historic timeline of the ancient Egypt. Not only that, a Temple dedicated to the daughter of Ra, the goddess Hathor, you know you will get a spectacular visual experience. The astrological replica is a little disappointing but the glyphs in the crypt are fascinating. The hypostyle hall and the colouring on the ceilings is just simply unsurpassed by any other temple. The preservation is amazing, in structure and colour. I was very well taken care of throughout the entire tour. Highly recommended.

The rich colors of the reliefs on the ceiling and walls, which took 10 years to remove, were very impressive. It takes about 40 minutes to reach Dendera. We recommend leaving early in the morning.
