Itinerary
You will visit the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, which is part of the jewels that have made the historic center a Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and San Miguel de Allende. The interior houses numerous artistic treasures. The altarpiece of the main altar is a neoclassical jewel; all its elements are covered in gold leaf. The altar and the steps are made of red marble that was brought from Italy.
Recently recognized as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, it has been located since its foundation in 1740 (18th century), it continues to be a place of worship and pilgrimage. Its great architectural appeal has been carefully restored over the last ten years. It has paintings and frescoes of great relevance, as well as treasures of baroque sculpture and two oil paintings that compare the similarities between San Miguel de Allende and Jerusalem. The first banner of the War of Independence was taken from its main altar by Cura Hidalgo, a canvas of the Virgin of Guadalupe that is now exhibited in the National Museum.
Its facades retain a Churrigueresque style, the tower is neoclassical. In the interiors of the church the visitor can admire paintings among which the death of San Francisco and one of San Gabriel stand out.
The San Miguel de Allende handicraft market is the perfect place to see the handwork of local artisans who work with brass, wool, quarry and mesquite wood carving, papier-mâché, glass, crafts, goldsmiths and ceramics, you can also find stones and antiques, the market covers three blocks, so it is impossible to leave empty-handed.
San Miguel de Allende was the place of residence of Ignacio de Allende. Due to the importance of this leader, the Villa de San Miguel el Grande was renamed San Miguel de Allende. His house is a wonderful colonial construction located on Cuna de Allende street on the corner of Umarán. The visit has three main attractions. You can appreciate the architecture of the house, relive the history of the independence leader and discover what the way of life was like at that time. Without a doubt, it is one of the most outstanding places to visit in San Miguel de Allende.
