Itinerary
Start the day with private pickup from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Porto. Travel comfortably in a premium private vehicle toward Coimbra. During the drive, your licensed driver-guide introduces Coimbra’s evolution from early royal seat to historic academic capital, setting the cultural framework for the day.
University of Coimbra — Joanina Library, Royal Palace and Chapel of São Miguel If selected, visit the University of Coimbra, including its most emblematic spaces: Joanina Library, former Royal Palace spaces and Chapel of São Miguel. This is the strongest option for guests interested in academic prestige, ceremony and UNESCO heritage
Old Cathedral of Coimbra — Sé Velha If selected, visit the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, one of Portugal’s most important Romanesque monuments. Its fortified structure reflects the political and military realities of medieval Coimbra.
Arco de Almedina Walk through the Arco de Almedina, the historic gateway linking Coimbra’s upper and lower city. This stop helps explain the relationship between academic life, civic movement and the medieval structure of the city.
Monastery of Santa Cruz If selected, visit the Monastery of Santa Cruz, founded in 1131 and closely linked to the foundations of Portugal. It is especially significant as the burial place of King Afonso Henriques and King Sancho I.
Lunch and Free Time in Coimbra Lunch is intentionally flexible and not included in the base price. Guests may choose where and when to pause, according to their preferences and the pace of the day.
Buçaco National Forest Arrive at Buçaco National Forest, a protected woodland shaped by centuries of Carmelite stewardship. Walking paths wind through rare tree species, fountains, chapels and secluded corners, creating a strong sense of silence and retreat.
Buçaco Palace — Exterior and Gardens Stop at Buçaco Palace, a late 19th-century Neo-Manueline construction originally conceived as a royal retreat. The exterior and garden setting reveal one of Portugal’s most theatrical romantic monuments, rising from the forest with dramatic visual impact.
Convent of Santa Cruz do Buçaco If selected, visit the former Convent of Santa Cruz do Buçaco, founded in the 17th century by the Discalced Carmelites. The simple cells, chapels and azulejo panels reveal the disciplined life once led here, in deliberate contrast with the palace’s decorative ambition.

The communication and customer service leading up to our tour was excellent and the day of accommodations were perfect! They helped us get admission tickets ahead of time which was very well thought through on their part. Everything was exactly as we expected and hoped for. Henrique was very knowledgeable, easy to talk to and a very helpful guide for our day. The van was great quality, waters were plenty, and we had a great time.

We had a lovely time visiting in queenborough and Bussaco Palace from Porto. Even though it was a rainy day, we had a great guide, Carlos, who was a great historian and excellent driver. We really loved the beautiful university library and Bussaco palace was extraordinarily gorgeous. Carlos also took us down a trail in the forest that was magical. Thank you for a wonderful day!
