Description

Budapest rewards the curious eater. On this small-group walking tour through the city center, you'll move from a breezy Danube-side square with views across to the Buda hills into narrow streets, covered passages, and family-run dining rooms that have been feeding this city for generations. Along the way: taste Hungary's iconic deep-fried street food fresh from the fryer, smoked sausage seasoned with paprika, goulash ladled out with pride, and a sparkling grape must that tastes like the Hungarian harvest in a glass. If you're joining in the morning, the tour winds up on grand Andrássy Avenue before finishing with a flaky, buttery strudel. Afternoon guests go further into the heart of the Jewish Quarter and one of Budapest's most storied courtyard passages, ending with a creative Hungarian dessert reinvented for the modern table. Seven tastings, two neighborhoods, and enough stories to change how you think about Eastern European food.

Itinerary

Pass by

Your tour will begin at one of Budapest's most striking squares, where the river bends and the city opens up. From this riverside square, home to the oldest church in Pest, you'll take in the sweeping views of the Danube, the bridges, and the green hills of Buda side.

20 min

A counter that does one thing exceptionally well: deep-fried dough topped with sour cream, melted cheese, and garlic. You'll taste Hungary's favourite street food and hear why it's practically a cultural institution.

Pass by

One of Pest's oldest streets, once the social runway of Budapest's golden age. You'll hear what it meant to queue here for a Big Mac during the Cold War, and why this street has always drawn a crowd.

45 min

This third-generation family restaurant, whose founders invented Hungary's first lunch delivery service, is famous fot their sausage, goulash, almapaprika, and a fizzy Tokaj grape must, plus a cold fruit soup that might change your mind about soup entirely. Afternoon guests also get a Soproni beer.

Pass by

A 200-metre covered passage that spent decades forgotten and now buzzes with bars, markets, and street life. You'll pass through and hear about what it used to be.

45 min

Settle into a modern Hungarian kitchen that reinterprets 19th-century recipes with a lighter touch. Chicken paprikash arrives slow-simmered with cucumber salad, plus a pour of Hungarian wine (olaszrizling, rosé cuvée, or portugieser) or the house craft beer. You'll find out why Hungarians didn't clink glasses for 150 years.

25 min

The tour closes with a playful update on a Hungarian comfort classic: vegan cottage cheese dumplings for the aftternoon tour, or a sweet strudel tasting for the morning tour. A worthy finale in the heart of the city.

A Great Taste of Budapest

What a great way to start off our trip in Budapest. The food was amazing with a fantastic variety. Going on a food tour makes the difference in experience, especially when we weren’t familiar with the cuisine. Our guide, Bogi, was extremely knowledgeable about the food but also Hungarian history and culture.

Great way to taste the city!

What a great way to experience the tastes of Budapest. We had 4 different stops and ate 8 different items. The walk between each stop was a great way to see the city and digest a bit of the food. Bogi was very knowledgeable about both the city and the food. I would absolutely recommend this tour to culinary adventure seekers!

This was an amazing morning! We were able to see various Districts, get some history, and best of all eat some wonderful Hungarian favorites. Bogi was our guide and is a true asset to the company. She was so warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. This was a day we will remember for a long time. Bogi also gave us recommendations for additional restaurants as well as sights we MUST SEE before we leave. Fantastic! Come hungry because you will WANT to eat EVERYTHING!
