Itinerary
The Royal Palace of Naples is a historic building located in Piazza del Plebiscito, in the historic center of Naples, where the main entrance is located: the entire complex, including the gardens and the San Carlo theater, also overlooks piazza Trieste and Trento, Piazza del Municipio and Via Acton. It was the historical residence of the Spanish viceroys for over one hundred and fifty years, of the Bourbon dynasty from 1734 to 1861, interrupted only for a decade at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the French domination with Giuseppe Bonaparte and Gioacchino Murat, and, following the Italy, of the Savoys [2]: sold in 1919 by Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy to the state property, it is mainly used as a museum, in particular the Royal Apartments, and is the seat of the national library. The Royal Palace was built starting in 1600, to reach its final appearance in 1858: numerous architects such as Domenico Fontana, Gaetano Genovese, Luigi Vanvitelli, Ferdinando Sanfelice and Francesco Antonio Picchiatti participated in its construction and related restoration work.
The area on which the gallery stands was already intensely urbanized in the 16th century and was characterized by a tangle of parallel streets connected by short alleys, which from Via Toledo opened out in front of Castel Nuovo. These alleys enjoyed a bad reputation as there were taverns (the infamous tavern of Cagliantese or Cagliantesa) houses of malfeasance and crimes of every kind were consumed. The fame conquered by the area over the centuries, already known to Giambattista Basile who immortalized the women of malfeasance in the place in his work Le muse napolitane, remained for almost the entire nineteenth century.
Castel sant'Elmo is a medieval castle, used as a museum, located on the Vomero hill near San Martino in Naples. It was once called Paturcium and stands in the place where, from the 10th century, there was a church dedicated to Sant'Erasmo (from which Eramo, Ermo and then Elmo). This mighty building (the first castle by extension of the city), partly derived from living rock (Neapolitan yellow tuff), originates from a Norman observation tower called Belforte. Due to its strategic importance, the castle has always been a coveted possession: from its position (250 m s.l.m.) one can observe the whole city, the gulf, and the roads that from the surrounding hills lead to the city. The castle, as well as a permanent museum, the "Naples Novecento", is also home to various temporary exhibitions, fairs and events: from 1998 until 2011 during the spring it was the headquarters of the Napoli Comicon (from 2012 moved to the Mostra d'Oltremare ). The castle, owned by the Italian State, since December 2014 is part of the assets managed by the museum complex of Campania. In 2016 he registered 199 233 visitors [2].
Posillipo already appears in the sources of the ancient Greeks, the first to inhabit the promontory then entirely covered by rocks and trees. There are Roman ruins near the banks as well as near the highest point of the hill; it is possible to see the remains of the openings that ventilated the tunnel that led to the residence of Publius Vedio Pollione. The remains of an amphitheater are also present. With the end of the ancient age the population of Naples closed in the fortified walls and the whole area fell into decline, completely prey to the barbarian invasions and neglect. In modern times, the area remained substantially underdeveloped until the construction of the Via Posillipo between 1812 and 1824. The road begins at the port of Mergellina and extends along the coast, almost parallel to the shore. Much of the area has been heavily rebuilt following the Second World War, but has preserved several historic buildings, including Villa Rosebery, residence of the President of the Republic [3].
You can admire the magnificent sea view and breathe the sea air.

Excellent tour carried out by Vicenzo, the peripheral Naples and Historic Naples. We will be back....Thank you.
I had an amazing experience on this panoramic tour through the historic center of Naples! The views were absolutely stunning, and walking through the narrow streets filled with history, culture, and vibrant local life was unforgettable. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing fascinating stories about the city's past, architecture, and traditions. From breathtaking viewpoints to iconic landmarks, every stop felt special and well thought out. I also loved discovering hidden corners and authentic spots that I would have never found on my own. The atmosphere of Naples is truly unique, and this tour captured it perfectly. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Naples who wants to experience the beauty, history, and soul of the city. A perfect way to explore the historic center and fall in love with Naples! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoyed this panoramic tour of Naples and the historic center. It was a great way to see the city from a more authentic and local point of view, which would be very difficult for a tourist without someone guiding you. The driver, Vincenzo, truly made the difference. He was kind, professional, and very easy to talk to, always making sure everything was going well. He also shared useful tips and little insights that you wouldn’t normally get on your own. It was a very pleasant and memorable experience. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Naples.
We had a panoramic tour of Naples, Vincenzo was exceptional, he showed us the most important points of Naples. He was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable as he explained history about Naples
I wish or driver had been more of a guide. I am quite sure we passed by many areas of interest without any explanation whatsoever. When asked, he spoke, but no information was freely given.
Dear Diane.. I just read your feedback.. and I'm very surpriced that you mentioned that Vincenzo D. Matola was not enough expert for you, although we never received any complain before.. It looks like you were looking for an expert licenced tour guide .. If you will point it out to me , I could help you in hiring a specific expert tour guide with an extra charge , like other people does if they are interested.. The one you purchased is guide driver that gives you the general information showing you the best places from the city.. I spoke with Vincenzo , and he told me that The tour began as agreed at 9:00 am. at your cruise ship's docking port. Vincenzo di Matola says ... We then went to the Duomo di San Gennaro, where I explained the importance of the patron saint to the city of Naples, while also providing information about the cathedral and the Treasure of San Gennaro. During the wait, your husband temporarily left due to illness; I therefore made sure to accompany him back to the ship before returning to you. Next, we headed to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, where I described its main exhibits and historical significance. The visit was not scheduled by your choice, as you were understandably concerned about your husband's condition. Next, we reached Castel Sant'Elmo; along the way, I showed you the Vomero neighborhood and gave you a preview of what you would see from the splendid view offered by the castle. Upon leaving, you informed me of your desire to interrupt the tour and return to the ship. On the way back I continued to provide you with explanations about the panoramic view of Naples, pointing out, among others, Vesuvius, Monte Somma, castles and churches visible along the route. I'd like to emphasize that I made myself completely available to you from the beginning, carefully managing the various situations that arose during the tour. I also remind you that the service you booked included a chauffeur-driven tour and not a licensed tour guide; nevertheless, I committed to providing you with as much information as possible during the trip and to answering all your questions. Finally, I believe that if you hadn't been satisfied with the service, I wouldn't have received a generous tip, for which I thank you again. Unfortunately, during the car ride, you were on the phone with the bank and with your husband to check the conditions. I didn't speak so as not to disturb you. We really don't understand this feedback.. Kind regards Vincenzo Frattini AmalfiTourCampania
I took a tour of Pompeii and the main points of Naples. Everyone's service was always attentive, and everything went as planned: they picked us up at the train station and dropped us off at the hotel at the end of the tour. Perfect. We also transferred to the airport, and everything went very well.
Great experience of touring Naples and its sights with Vincenzo! Comfortable vehicle and important points covered in nice tour.
