Itinerary
Noboribetsu Hell Valley We begin with a visit to Noboribetsu Hell Valley, a dramatic volcanic crater created by geothermal activity. The sight of steam rising from the ground and the strong scent of sulfur creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Enjoy walking along well-maintained trails and get a close-up view of the powerful geothermal forces that shaped this unique landscape.
Cape Chikyu (Earth Cape) Next, we head to Cape Chikyu, a scenic cliffside point offering a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. The name “Chikyu” comes from the Ainu word for “cliff.” Perched 131 meters above sea level, the white lighthouse here emits light visible up to 44 km away. The area is also a natural habitat for birds like peregrine falcons and is on the migratory route for many species. It was voted the No. 1 natural scenic spot in Hokkaido in a poll by the Asahi Shimbun.
Sairo Observatory (Scenic Stopover) Located on the western edge of Lake Toya, the Sairo Observatory offers one of the best panoramic views in the area. From this vantage point, you can take in the full beauty of Lake Toya, Nakajima Island, Mt. Usu, and even the striking Showa Shinzan. It’s a perfect spot to pause, breathe in the fresh air, and capture stunning photos of Hokkaido’s natural scenery.
(Cable car fee not included) Mount Usu is an active volcano located on the shores of Lake Toya in Hokkaido, Japan, and is an important part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Standing at about 733 meters above sea level, it may not be extremely tall, but it is well known for its frequent volcanic activity and rich geological features. Since the 17th century, Mount Usu has erupted many times. The most recent eruption occurred in 2000, leaving behind clearly visible volcanic remains. Today, the area has become a natural classroom for studying volcanic landscapes and geological formations.
Lake Shikotsu Our final stop is the stunning Lake Shikotsu, located in western Chitose and part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. With an average depth of 265 meters and a maximum depth comparable to the height of Tokyo Tower, it is Japan’s second-deepest lake and the northernmost lake that never freezes, even in winter. In summer, it becomes a habitat for migratory birds and a hotspot for birdwatchers. In autumn, the area is blanketed in vibrant foliage, and the sunsets over the lake are breathtaking — a must-see for photography lovers. This tour is perfect for travelers looking to make the most of their time in Hokkaido, combining nature, culture, and unforgettable views into a single, fulfilling day trip. Taking a guided tour was the simplest way to visit all the sites as public transport is difficult and would take more time. It was a long tour (10 hours), but worth the trip and the money paid. The tour was in Mandarin and English, so I needed to all explanations twice. For this tour, see if you find a discount on Klook.
Our guide was great and very informative. But there were too many stops and very less time at each stop. We spent about 5 h 45 m driving and 25-35 m at each stop. I would take away one or both Lake Toya stops and extend the Lake Shikotsu stop. It was a very exhausting tour.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your guide and found the commentary informative. We will be sure to pass your kind words on to the guide. We also sincerely appreciate your suggestions regarding the itinerary. We understand that the day involves a considerable amount of driving, and that the time at each sightseeing spot may have felt too short. Our current route is designed to allow guests to experience several of Hokkaido's most popular attractions in a single day, but we understand that different travelers have different preferences. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on another tour in the future. Best regards, YH Globe Travel Co., Ltd.
As luck would have it, our day was impaired by typhoon level rain. We could not see most of the views today, but being able to explore the region with the help of our great guide (Oscar!) was still quite memorable. He did an amazing job of organizing us and suggesting lunch plans, etc. Thank you!
This was a highlight of our Sapporo experience. The bus was comfortable and safe, the guide was both entertaining and informative, and the sights were impressive.
