Itinerary
Mechelen's very own Champs-Élysées: a broad shopping street with imposing façades and one of Flanders' oldest town halls. The street's name refers to the iron railings once placed alongside a medieval brook where fishing boats moored.
Three iconic 16th–17th century houses along the Dyle river: Het Paradijske, De Duiveltjes and Sint-Jozef. Each façade tells its own story — from the Garden of Eden to devils used as columns. A true highlight of Mechelen's skyline.
A revived city stream: the Melaan was filled in 1913 but reopened in 2007. Stroll along the water on wide stone benches lined with trees — a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.
A stunning Gothic cathedral with a 97-metre tower. Climb 538 steps for a panoramic view over Mechelen — and discover the world-famous carillons that have made this city a global centre of bell-ringing tradition.
The vibrant heart of the city, surrounded by colourful guild houses and a historic town hall. Discover how Mechelen once served as the capital of the Burgundian Netherlands under regent Margaret of Austria.
A stunning Renaissance palace where humanists like Erasmus and Thomas More once gathered. Today the museum houses masterpieces of the Northern Renaissance and tells the story of Mechelen's golden Burgundian age.
Built from 1507, this was the residence of Margaret of Austria, regent of the Habsburg Netherlands — and one of the first Renaissance buildings in the Low Countries. She raised her nephew Charles, the future Holy Roman Emperor, within these walls. Today the palace serves as the city's courthouse, but its beautiful Renaissance façade and charming courtyard garden are open to visitors.
Mechelen's cultural hub, surrounded by the Cultural Centre, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Conservatory. In summer, open-air theatre, music and carillon concerts from the nearby St. Rumbold's Tower bring this square to life.

Shabnam was a great tour guide. She was a great speaker and story teller. Very engaging.
I live in Mechelen for six months and finally wanted to get to know the city better. I didn't expect this... What a fantastic city! Mechelen’s impressive history was given a playful look and we received several recommendations for local restaurants, concerts, events and so on. I've learned an enormous amount from this. Thank you so much!! Favorite stop: the story about the nuns’ toilet 🤭 Jolan is a vessel full of knowledge and he brings the history of Mechelen to life!
The tour was really great!! Jolan has guided us through Mechelen super enthusiastically. He told nice stories about the city. Totally perfect!

Passion, energy, all this while keeping the tour interesting by adding facts you would never learn elsewhere!
Amazing tour with Jolan! Fun and interesting, we learned a lot!
This tour honestly felt more like a relaxed walk with a knowledgeable local than a formal guided experience, which I really appreciated. Jolan has a very natural way of explaining things — nothing felt scripted or overly rehearsed. Instead of overwhelming you with information, he shares stories and context that actually stick with you. You can tell he knows the history well, but also knows how to make it relatable. There were a few moments where we just paused, looked around, and he pointed out small details or told little anecdotes that made the place feel alive. Those were probably my favorite parts. I also liked that the group dynamic felt easy and informal. You could ask questions at any time without feeling awkward, and the whole experience felt quite personal. If you’re the kind of person who prefers something genuine over something polished and “touristy,” this is a really good choice.
I have been on a walking tour of Mechelen once before. But this one with Jolan made me see Mechelen with new eyes. He has a unique and fun way of taking his guests through the centuries and is able to combine a great story with a lot of good facts. It was a cold wintry day, when we did the tour with him, but there was never a dull moment. His narrative made the tour absolutely worthwhile. This tour with Jolan from Urban Insight is very highly recommended if you really want to get to know the city.
