Lisbon: Dinosaur Footprints, Caves and Obidos - Tickets Included

Description
Three incredible worlds in one unforgettable day. From prehistoric giants to underground wonders and medieval walls. Start by travelling 165 million years back in time and learn how the footprints were formed, which types of dinosaurs created them, and why this monument is one of the most important Jurassic sites in Europe. You will clearly see the movement, scale, and behaviour of these dinosaurs. Next, explore the spectacular Mira de Aire Caves, one of Portugal's Seven Natural Wonders. The guided visit takes you through a descent of about 75 metres, passing illuminated chambers, unique rock formations, and flowing water shaped over thousands of years. A lift brings you back to the surface at the end of the tour. To complete the journey, visit the magical town of Óbidos, one of Portugal's best preserved medieval villages. Your guide will provide historical context about the town, after which you will have free time to explore the streets and atmosphere of Óbidos at your own pace.

Itinerary
At the Natural Monument of the Dinosaur Footprints in Ourém, visitors will walk along one of the largest sets of preserved sauropod tracks in Europe, dating back more than 175 million years. This open air site offers a unique opportunity to see hundreds of footprints imprinted in limestone, perfectly preserved from the Jurassic period. With the guidance of your tour leader, you will learn how these fascinating giants moved and lived, and understand the scientific importance of this site, considered one of Portugal’s most remarkable paleontological treasures.
The Mira de Aire Caves are the largest in Portugal, stretching for more than 11 kilometers underground. Visitors will descend into a fascinating world of stalactites and stalagmites, shaped by nature over thousands of years. Modern lighting and safe walkways highlight the beauty of the rock formations, creating a magical and accessible experience for all ages.
Stroll through the medieval streets of Óbidos, a picturesque town surrounded by castle walls. Admire the whitewashed houses decorated with flowers, explore local craft shops, and taste the famous cherry liqueur ginjinha often served in a chocolate cup.
Visit the Castle of Óbidos, a medieval fortress that dominates the town and offers breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape. Built in the 12th century and later expanded, the castle is one of the best preserved in Portugal and a symbol of the country’s rich history.

If you book only one tour while visiting Portugal, make sure it is with Francisco Almeida. This was, without a doubt, the best tour of our entire trip. Francisco is the absolute definition of a premier guide: cultured, exceptionally intelligent, deeply knowledgeable, and patient. On top of his incredible historical and regional context, he is a smooth, highly professional driver. We traveled in a brand-new, pristine VW van that was extremely clean and remarkably comfortable for a full day of exploring. The itinerary was a perfect blend of ancient history, natural wonder, and medieval charm: Natural Monument of the Dinosaur Footprints (Ourém): Walking along 175-million-year-old Jurassic sauropod tracks in the open-air limestone was surreal. Francisco’s guidance brought the scientific importance of these ancient giants to life. Mira de Aire Caves (Grutas de Mira de Aire): Descending into Portugal’s largest underground cave system was breathtaking. The modern walkways and ambient lighting illuminated massive stalactites and stalagmites shaped over thousands of years. Historic Óbidos: A picturesque walk through medieval streets framed by flower-draped, whitewashed houses. Sampling traditional ginjinha (cherry liqueur) served in a chocolate cup was an absolute delight! Castelo de Óbidos: Finishing up at this exceptionally well-preserved 12th-century fortress offered sweeping, panoramic views across the countryside. Francisco elevated every single moment with his warmth, expertise, and pacing. Thank you, Francisco, for an unforgettable day in Portugal. 10/10 recommendation!
We had an absolutely wonderful day! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable (Francisco) welcoming, and passionate about sharing the history and culture of the area. We learned so many new things while enjoying great conversation throughout the tour, which made the experience even more memorable. The sights were beautiful, and everything was well organized from start to finish. We never felt rushed and had plenty of time to take everything in. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area—it was one of the highlights of our trip!
Francisco provided a fun and immersive experience and used a wide spread of knowledge of the country’s history. He has a massive collection of great facts and stories about Portugal and he brought a great fun and positive energetic presence. He is a wonderful guide and has a great sense of humour and personality. Francisco brought joy to me and my family and we are greatly appreciative of the experience. Portugal is a beautiful country and deserves much more attention, especially in the areas he brought us to. The villa, caves and the dinosaur park are a wonderful place to take a break from the busy streets of the city of Lisbon, especially in areas like the small towns and countryside that is located outside of the city. The restaurants he recommended were absolutely fantastic and the food was perfection. I would recommend this experience to anybody looking for a nice tour outside of the city and in the more isolated areas of the beautiful country of Portugal.
We loved this tour! Francis is an amazing guide who goes above and beyond to create a very interesting and enjoyable experience. We definitely recommend it, especially to dinosaur lovers
Fantastic experience, Pedro the guide in Spanish is the ultimate
Great experience with Francisco on this tour. My partner and I were the only ones who booked on this particular day so we essentially got a private tour along with our infant. Francisco was early to the meeting point and extremely patient with us as we attended to the baby all day (sorry for the crying Francisco!). He was very friendly, knowledgable on a variety of topics and well prepared. The dino footprints were really cool to see. They seem to be undiscovered by tourists and we were the only ones there when we visited. The cave was also great and had features that I hadn't seen in other caves. The tours there are timed so you'll be taken through with a group of people. Since the cave explanation was only given in Portugese, Francisco came in with us and translated / explained for us. Lastly, Obidos was also great, with two hours of free time given to eat and explore. You can walk atop the city walls, try some ginja and browse the shops. All in all, a great variety tour with a professional guide who is very accommodating. We had a very relaxed and comfortable experience.
What a fantastic tour! Francisco our guide was amazing! So much information! We started at the cave, which was breathtaking! We were lucky as not many people were there so lots of opportunity to take pictures. Francisco also took some great pictures of us. Next was the Dinosaur tracks. We couldn’t do the first location because of weather but that did not deter Francisco. He had a plan B . He took us to a limestone quarry that had amazing 3 toed dinosaur footprints. Truly fascinating. They did exist 🦖🦕Next was the beautiful medieval 🏰 town of Óbidos. The fact these places remain in tact is amazing. You can walk the walls , if you dare. We had a lovely lunch, checked out the local merchants and just soaked it all in. This tour is well worth doing. Francisco is a wealth of information. Thank you for a great day. One we won’t forget.
I was lucky to be alone with the guide, low season period. Beautiful day living up to my expectations. For the dinosaur footprints portion, it’s a shame that there is not more de facto preservation on the site. The caves are simply breathtaking. For the visit of the city Obidos, I would have stayed longer than 2 hours. There was the Christmas village, although focused on children, the elves had as much fun with adults! The scenery is spectacular. A big thank you to my guide of the day Francisco, gives a lot of information and historical facts, just wonderful!!
We had a really good day with Francisco, everything felt easy and relaxed and we never felt rushed at all, the itinerary worked well and we saw some really nice places along the way, our kids enjoyed it as well which made the day even better, overall it was a really good experience and we were happy we booked it
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are very happy to know that you and your family enjoyed the day and never felt rushed. It was a pleasure sharing these places with you and hearing that your kids had a great time as well makes it even better. We truly appreciate you choosing our tour and hope to welcome you again on your next visit to Portugal. Francisco
