Toki no Kane is a symbol of Kawagoe. Because there were no clocks in the Edo period, this tower has told the time to the people of Kawagoe by its ringing bell. Even today, you can hear the bell at 6 am, 12pm, 3 pm and 6 pm. Toki no Kane, along with the surrounding environment retains the vestiges of the Edo period.
There are many restaurants in this warehouse-style building. You can eat Japanese dishes such as kamameshi (a rice, meat and vegetable dish served in a small pot) and ramen. There is also a free rest place, so why not take a rest here when you are tired from walking?
Not only did Kawagoe flourish as a castle town, but there were also many prosperous merchants living in warehouse-style architectures. Such a streetscape, where many warehouse-style buildings remain is rare even in Japan. In this museum, you can actually enter the warehouse and look around it.
Kawagoe was a castle town of Kawagoe Castle in the Edo period. Most of the Castle does not remain anymore today, but the entrance and a few rooms are open to the public. The outfit back in those days and dolls of feudal lords are on exhibit. The stately atmosphere makes you feel almost as if you were back in those days.
As a sacred place for love, “Hikawa Jinja [shrine]” is an extremely popular place among attractions of Kawagoe. There is an amulet called “Enmusubi dama [love success stone]”, which is very famous as a lucky charm for love. You must get one when you visit Kawagoe with someone you care about. Other than that, people visit this place to pray for safe delivery, baby’s health, and shichigosan celebration (young child celebration). They also open for shinto wedding ceremonies. Really holy place. Come and visit to pray for a happy love life. You can get pretty shinto charms and paper amulets, which would be good souvenirs and gifts.
Kawagoe City Museum is another must-visit place as an attraction of Kawagoe. There are many historical buildings in Kawagoe, and that is why this city is called Koedo [little Edo]. The exterior of this musuem is distinctive and impressive. A museum with a simple tranquil Japanese appearance would be rare. Definitely worth to see! Thier exhibits include: artworks created by artists related to Kawagoe, exhibitions, citizenship gallery, etc. Being a locally based museum, this place is very popular among students too. Interesting place to visit.
“Kitain” is a buddhist temple which you will not want to miss when you travel to Kawagoe. This temple has been standing there for about 1200 years. Its magnificent atmosphere keeps attracting people who visit. There are many highlights inside the temple, but the view around this place is also excellent. Being filled with beautiful green plants and flowers that bloom in each season, this temple is a great place where people can enjoy its natural environment. This temple has 7 mysterious stories passed from generation to generation. You might want to hear them. Nice temple to visit and refresh yourself. You would feel great.
Japanese castles are very popular as a tourist attraction. Highly admired by not only domestic but also foreign tourists because those castles directly offer a sense of Japanese history. Since there are various castles all over Japan, many people would visit to enjoy a distinctive castle view owned by each area. Kawagoe has such a castle attraction too. It is not that the entire castle remains as it was, but this place is a great historical attraction. With brilliant cherry blossoms blooming, it looks really elegant in spring. Perfect place for history lovers. Head there and enjoy a castle view in Kawagoe.
To enjoy onsen is one of the best things about traveling in Japan. Kawagoe also has a popular natural hot spring facility, “Kawagoe Onsen”. They offer various types of wood made baths and stone made baths. The various baths includes: warm bath, hot bath, carbon dioxide bath, special bath, and lie-down bath. So much fun! Beyond that, sauna, eatery, and massage are also available. Tourists often need to walk for sightseeing in Kawagoe because the entire town is an attraction. Take a break at Kawagoe Onsen when you are tired.
There are many various festivals in Japan. Some people would get excited just by thinking about them. There must be many tourists who want to experience local festivals in each area. Kawagoe also has a traditional festival, “Kawagoe Matsuri [festival]”. By this traditional local event, the entire town gets so busy and filled with enthusiasm. The sad point is that those kind of experiences are on offer only in festival season. However, at Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan, it is possible to feel the excitement all through a year. There are many things that relate to Kawagoe Festival such as displays of floats, photo corners, and so on. Fun place to experience a dynamic festival world.

Kawagoe is just an hours ride by train. I attended the Daruma Festival held each January 3rd at Kitain Temple. There are large crowds, delicious street foods, and many people selling the darumas and other good luck displays to wish for good luck in the coming year. The temple line was long with people waiting to enter to pray for luck and health in the new year. The area with the 500 stone buddhas is a must-see. Then a short walk leads to the main street where the iconic bell tower is located. Try to be there when the bell sounds. Many of the old buildings and shops give you the feeling of old Edo. And of course, safe some room to eat the sweet delights sold in Candy Alley. You must also try the sweet potato chips and donuts, and ice cream. Look for and visit the Kawagoe Festival Museum in order to learn about the annual festival. Some of the floats are on display, and a video and a live speaker explain what the celebration is all about. Of course, if you visit in October, you can see the festival in person. The Kawagoe Festival (Matsuri) typically happens on the third weekend of October, expected to be October 17-18, in 2026, featuring elaborate floats (Dashi), music, and parades in the historic Kurazukuri district. There is so much more to see that a day trip can only touch on the highlights. You will not be disappointed.
Great tour with Masa: he was knowledgable, personable and professional. We would recommend this tour to others.
I appreciate our time exploring Kawagoe together. The memories we created are truly unforgettable. I genuinely hope you’ll have the opportunity to revisit Japan. It would be my pleasure to welcome you back and have the chance to meet you once more. -Masa
I'm from the Philippines and took a guided walking tour with my mom and partner in Kawagoe — it was such a memorable experience! Our guide was super friendly, patient and spoke great English, making it easy to enjoy and understand the history of this beautiful old town. We walked through Hikawa Shrine, Main Street, saw the famous Bell Tower, and explored Candy Alley (the local sweets were amazing! We kept stopping to try different places! Haha!). Our guide, Isao-san shared fun stories, gave great local tips, and made the whole tour feel personal and engaging. Kawagoe is a perfect day trip from Tokyo, and this tour really made the visit special. Highly recommended if you want a mix of culture, food, and fun!
Thanks for making the review of my tour! I also spent good time together. Kawagoe is my birthplace so want to take many guests to this town. In October very big festival is held in Kawagoe . I want you to come back some time in this time again.
The guide, Masa, was great. We get to see the shrine and temples. He went into a great details during the tour. He was very patient with our questions and request.

We had a wonderful tour of Kawagoe recently. Little Edo is an easily accessible town from downtown Tokyo with interesting sights. Kyoko Kawano-san was knowledgeable, friendly and proficient in English. She had good local knowledge and shared interesting local insights of the temples and shrines and lovely quaint shopping streets.
Thank you very much for your wonderful review! Traveling Kawagoe was a little excursion and very fun. You enjoyed not only temples and shrines but also tried local drink ,Amazake or Daifuku- mochi , rice cake with sweet potato. It was still in the new year period , so , you were celebrated by Shishimai, Lion Dancing. I believe such experience made you very refreshing. It's my great pleasere to have walked with you. Hoping to see you again!! Kyoko
Our guide, Shinji, made this trip so great. He was extremely accommodating with last minute changes and did what he could to make the tour great. We would absolutely recommend him and use him again.
Dear my guest, I have heard your very positive message on our tour of Kawagoe on Sunday, October 13th. I am very glad and honored to receive such a wonderful review from my guide service. It is I that enjoyed the lovely company that day and the conversation we exchanged on the way. Though we were unable to make it to the remains of Kawagoe Castle, I hope you and your mother got the most of this classic town Kawagoe. I should have paid more attention to your mother's walkability and suggested an alternative plan in advance; riding a bus from the station, etc. Overall I am very happy that you had a good time with my guide service and could spend a good Sunday. And I hope you have had a chance to visit Kamakura by now and are going through a nice stay in Japan. Hope to meet you and your mother again. Best, Shinji Higuchi
Show was our Tour Guide and did an excellent job. He took us to all the interesting sites and places in Kawagoe where we learned about the history and culture. He was very flexible when my wife wanted to do some shopping. Taxi’s and buses were sparse, so be prepared to walk a bit. Overall, an excellent experience.
Thank you for taking the time to leave such wonderful comments. Although it was only a short 4-hour period, I was very pleased to guide you around Kawagoe. I apologize for the inconvenience caused by the museums being closed on Monday. Thank you for walking to each spot despite the heat. There are many other amazing places to explore outside of Tokyo as well, so I hope you continue to enjoy various destinations in Japan. Show
We liked our guide. He is a good man. He planed our trip very details in advance. Though, we were late and messed almost all the plan he did, he was calm and rescheduled a new plan to what we liked.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Although it was only a short four-hour visit, I am very pleased that you enjoyed it. Kawagoe can be quite inconvenient as we need to use the bus to get around to different spots, so I appreciate your understanding. Next time, I hope you can enjoy some of the best coffee spots in Kawagoe and Tokyo. Show
