Sengan-en is a Japanese style stately home and landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. Sengan-en was built in 1658 as one of the residences of the powerful Shimadzu clan. One of the garden's most striking features is its use of active volcano Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as borrowed scenery. The gardens cover 50,000 square meters and include calming ponds, bubbling streams, mysterious shrines, a bamboo grove, and a mountain hiking trail. Visit Tsurugane Shrine and pray to become more beautiful, or the unusual Cat Shrine and pray for the health and longevity of your feline friend! The expansive house provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of one of Japan’s most influential feudal lords, and hosted Edward VIII of the UK and Nicholas II of Russia among others. See the rooms that the lord spent his daily life in and enjoy the view of the gardens and scenery beyond as only a samurai lord could.
Kyu Shuseikan Kikai Kojo(Shouko Shuseikan) The extant oldest western-style factory building in Japan. The exhibits currently showcase items related to the Satsuma domain's modernization projects.
Satsuma Kiriko Glassworks・Iso Kogei-kan You can watch the manufacturing process of Satsuma Kiriko Cut-glass here as well as buy pieces at the neighboring Iso Kogei-kan. Chinese overlaying coloured glass techniques were fused with European glass cutting methods to produce this delicate and graceful cut glass masterpiece. Developed by the 28th lord of Satsuma, Shimazu Nariakira, the technique faded out with his death for a period. However, more than a hundred years later, the mysterious and beautiful sparkle was revived and came to be known nation-wide as a representative craftwork of Kagoshima.
Foreign Engineer's Residence (Ijinkan) A residence for the foreign engineers who began the operation of the first Western-style spinning mill in Japan. Films and exhibits in the facility present the interesting features and importantance of World Heritage.
Shiroyama ("Castle Mountain") is a 107-meter hill located in the center of Kagoshima city. Its name comes from the fact that it was once the site of a castle. The 2-kilometer promenade to the observatory is filled with more than 600 species of plants. Though located in an urban area, it is a treasure trove of nature populated by many birds and insects. The observatory located at the end of the promenade is a magnificent photo spot overlooking Mt. Sakurajima and Kinko Bay.
Satsuma domain. This castle gate, thelargest one of this kind in Japan with itsheight and width of 20 meters, was restored in 2020 for the first time inabout 150 years.
Sakurajima Visitor Center Learn the history of Sakurajima's volcanic eruptions through films and dioramas. A base facility of the Geopark. You can shop a diverse lineup of specialty goods and souvenirs.
"Sakurajima" Yougan Nagisa Park Public Footbath A 100 meters long footbath, one of the biggest in Japan. Enjoy the all-natural hot spring while gazing up at Sakurajima.
Yunohira Observatory is the highest point on Mt. Sakurajima open to the general public. From the observatory, you can see a rough lava field and, at times, rising plumes of volcanic smoke. This spot commands a picturesque view of Kagoshima City and the calm waters of Kinko Bay. The night brings a beautiful view in which the pitch dark of Mt. Sakurajima contrasts with the lights of Kagoshima City. Taking inspiration from the name Sakurajima (cherry blossom island), the roof over the observation deck is shaped like a cherry blossom petal.
The observatory is located along a 1-km trail on a small hill in the lava field created by the great 1946 eruption. From here there is a clear view of impressive Sakurajima, the world famous active volcano, and Kinko Bay. As the observatory is close to the crater of the steep, cone shaped South Peak, you may hear roaring or explosive sounds from the crater that give quite a different impression of Sakurajima.
The name "Tenmonkan" comes from an astronomical institute called Meijikan built by the Satsuma domain in the Edo period. Today Tenmonkan is Kagoshima's central shopping district where you can enjoy shopping and eating out.
The greatest shrine in Kagoshima with an enormous Torii gate. A popular sightseeing spot especially during the new years and Rokugatsudo Lantern Festival. Admission to the shrine is free of charge
Attractive exhibitions with various themes such as the Kuroshio Current and “Sea of Nansei Islands” The aquarium boasts a great location with Sakurajima directly in front. The main attraction is 30,000 marine creatures of approximately 500 species. The Gigantic Kuroshio Fish Tank, 25-m wide and containing 1,500 tons of water, is overwhelming. It exhibits fish such as whale sharks and tuna that migrate with the Kuroshio Current. There are many other exhibitions under different themes such as “Sea of Nansei Islands,” where you can see colorful tropical fish and live corals, and “Deep Sea of Kagoshima,” the aquarium has Vestimentiferan tube-worms/Lamellibrachia Satsuma (tube-worms), a rare creature found only in Kagoshima. There are other attractions including events to learn about dolphins and the diet of whale sharks, harbor seals and electric eels.

Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots (Chiran Peace Museum) A Testament to the Importance of Worldwide Peace To tell a true story for future generations and to wish for eternal world peace, the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots collects, preserves, and displays the belongings, final letters, and documents which were left behind by the members of the army special attack corps, who died at the battle of Okinawa at the end of the Greater East Asia War (called the Pacific War after rhw war). Each of the farewell notes and relics displayed show the absurdity of war as well as the pilot's feelings, and make us recall the importance of peace, our lives, and family bonds. Chiran is a town in which the army's special air attack base was located toward the end of the Pacific War. At the Chiran Peace Museum, valuable records and materials, such as deceased soldiers' portraits and their belongings, are collected, preserved and displayed.
Chiran Samurai Residence Complex Nicknamed the "Little Kyoto of Satsuma", Chiran is home to more than 500 samurai residences during the late Edo period (19th century). As the original buildings of the complex are well-preserved, one can get to witness a real, Edo Period Samurai settlement here. The charm of the Chiran Samurai Residence Complex lies in the 700m stonewall-lined paths, the scattered Samurai houses and the beautifully landscaped gardens within. Built with defense purposes in mind, the paths are neither too wide nor too narrow, and there are many corners and bents to reduce visibility (of potential invaders). Furthermore, the hedges (behind the stone walls of the houses) are pruned in such a way that one inside the house can see the outside clearly, but not the other way round. As such, it is possible to ambush invaders with arrows and spears without exposing one's location.
Kirishima Jingu Shrine’s Main Hall, Shinden Hall and Worship Hall were designated national treasures by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on February 9, 2022. This marks the first time a cultural asset in Kagoshima Prefecture has received a national treasure designation for its architecture. Located in Kirishima City, Kirishima Jingu Shrine sits on a slope on the hillside of Mt. Kirishima, its buildings facing the summit of Mt. Takachiho. The current shrine was built in 1715 by the feudal lord of the then-Kagoshima domain. In bestowing the recognition, the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs praised the composition of the shrine buildings, which takes advantage of the difference in elevation, and the stunning decorations throughout the shrine complex. In front of the main shrine are ryubashira (dragons carved into pillars), which are known as “dragon pillars” and are unique to southern Kyushu.
Come use all five senses and enjoy the magnificent artwork enveloped in Kirishima's nature. The Kirishima Art Forest is a modern art museum surrounded by the rich nature of Kirishima. Not only are there exhibitions held within the museum but there is also a great variation of outdoor exhibitions offered, making good use of the extensive gounds area. Outside, the 13 hectares area (roughly 32 acres) is spotted with about 22 works of art. The works displayed outdoors are all original ideas and pieces from efforts made by domestic and international artists who actually visited this site. Further, while walking along a 2km-garden trail visitors may touch or even sit on the pieces and appreciate the art directly.
Marutake Armor Factory, which was renovated and reopened in 2018, is a beautiful location with a large Japanese castle and garden on the inside. In the workshop, you can see numerous armor and helmets used in movies and TV shows, as well as see the craftsmen at work! There are numerous photo opportunities throughout the park, and you can even borrow armor and pretend to be a great warlord from the Sengoku period. The park also has a classic cork gun game, souvenir stores selling Japanese Samurai products, and a restaurant, ensuring that you have many thrilling moments throughout your visit!
Kiln of the 15th Chin Jukan From the 1st Chin Jukan though the current 15th, this Satsuma ware kiln has kept its fire burning. Tada; Tabikago went above and beyond with his staff- Kozo and the Kagoshima port staff. Let me reassure you first- the other reviews that say anything negative are absolutely wrong. This experience and company are more than incredible. Tada catered and cared for his customers keeping them reassured through email and WhatsApp about the experience. So what was our experience- we booked as a family of four- a collection from the port and also drop off to the port inside cruise timings. Our first stop off would be the sandbath- which you pay for separately from the booking with Tabikago- the car was gorgeous. It’s not just a car- it’s air conditioned, you’re paying for privacy and comfort- you’re paying for the beauty of silence whilst you take in a beautiful coastal view planned by the driver and Tada- the owner. The hour drive was so comfortable and amazing to look at the views. We reached the sandbath- early as it opened. Tada took in to account queue times of other bookings and said- this is the best choice- he and the driver were right. At each stop- you were dropped literally at the entrance of each place- the sandbath entrance- kozo was kind and always asked if we wanted a memorable photo- which we always said yes. Kozo doesn’t speak English but his kindness and smiling face was all you need. Sandbath was then paid for separately but Kozo waits outside and looks out for you. Meanwhile Tada is messaging you advice and pointers of what you could do. So have your phone nearby to see Tada’s updated texts. After the sandbath- Kozo the driver was there to smile and take us to our next location- he opened the door for us when we were near the car. So attentive! We then drove to a location- where Kozo did all the same attentive methods- and took us briefly for a photo opportunity to Nishi-Oyama Station a famous southernmost railway station on mainland Japan. It is also a popular photo spot for views of Mt. Kaimondake, the beautiful mountain often called “Satsuma Fuji” because of its resemblance to Mt. Fuji. Thereafter we went for lunch- paid for separately by us- not in the price for the Tada. The lunch recommendation at yakiniku nabeshima ibusuki was excellent and again- Kozo was attentive- parking right out of the front of the restaurant. Thereafter we stopped at lake ikeda for a photo opportunity- then drove back to the port for around 1.30pm- which was perfect. Tada then was there with his port staff smiling and took American Express for us to pay. You can also pay cash. The price was fair and not even close to some of the cruise excursions. The views and car experience you get is worth the money! I can not recommend this tour enough. Thank you Tabikago- we loved Kagoshima and we can not wait to book again with you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed and wonderful review of your Kagoshima private shore excursion with TABIKAGO. It was truly a pleasure to welcome your family to Kagoshima when your cruise ship called at Marine Port Kagoshima and to help you make the most of your time here. We are especially happy to hear that you enjoyed not only the destinations themselves, but also the comfort, privacy, and flexibility of traveling by private car. From the beginning, our priority was to arrange the day carefully around your cruise schedule while giving your family enough time to enjoy each experience without feeling rushed. Starting early allowed you to arrive at Saraku Natural Sand Bath in Ibusuki when it opened and enjoy this unique Kagoshima experience before it became busier. We were also delighted that the schedule gave us the opportunity to include memorable photo stops at Nishi-Oyama Station, with views of Mt. Kaimondake, known locally as “Satsuma Fuji,” and at Lake Ikeda. We are also very glad that you enjoyed your Japanese-style yakiniku lunch and had the opportunity to taste Kagoshima Black Beef during your visit. Thank you especially for your kind words about Kozo. Although he does not speak English, he takes great pride in providing safe, professional, and attentive service. I know he will be very happy to hear that his kindness, smile, assistance with photos, and care throughout the journey helped make your day special. As you mentioned, I remained available by WhatsApp throughout the day while Kozo took care of your transportation. We are delighted that this combination of a professional private driver and personal support from TABIKAGO helped you feel comfortable and reassured throughout your shore excursion. Most importantly, we are very happy that you returned to Marine Port Kagoshima with plenty of time before your ship’s departure and that your family took home so many wonderful memories of Kagoshima. Your generous recommendation and your words that the experience was worth the price mean a great deal to us. Thank you again for choosing TABIKAGO for your private shore excursion and for trusting us with your family’s day in Kagoshima. We would be absolutely delighted to welcome you back to Kagoshima someday. Until then, we hope the photographs and memories from your day in Kagoshima will bring back many happy memories for years to come. Warmest regards, TABIKAGO
Excellent trip that we had today with it being better than anticipated with the owner Toda meeting us at the port right on time with the added extra of our daughter being given a lovely bit of origami to make her feel special too. We were sent of in a lovely car with our driver Kozo who was smartly presented and very welcoming even though he didn’t speak English was easy to communicate with from the word go. Taken to our first destination as planned and fully enjoyed always being pointed in the right direction by Kozo. We then went to a bonus location to take some photos with Kozo even coming out of the car to take some photos for us. We then went for lunch and Kozo set us up before waiting for us in the car. Then with assistance from Toda speaking to Kozo on the phone we were then taken to lake ikeda for some photos with Kozo again assisting being always pleasant, polite and happy to look after us as much as possible possible. After this we headed back to the port and were met by Toda on arrival. I will never forget him and his wife waving to us as we got back onto the ship. Such a personal experience and such a lovely day. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a warm and thoughtful review of your family’s day in Kagoshima. I am especially happy to hear that the personal touches at Marine Port Kagoshima became part of your memories of the day. I would love to share a little story about the origami crane that was given to your daughter and the lady who stood beside me waving goodbye as your family returned to the ship. Her name is Hamako. For more than a decade, Hamako has been welcoming cruise ships to Kagoshima and waving goodbye to passengers as they depart. Over the years, alongside welcoming arriving cruise ships and seeing them off, she has also hand-made countless origami cranes to give to passengers and crew members, building warm and friendly connections with visitors from around the world. The origami crane your daughter received was one of those handmade by Hamako herself as a small gift of welcome from Kagoshima. Over more than a decade, she has now welcomed and seen off passengers on more than 850 cruise ship calls to Kagoshima. For this count, welcoming and seeing off the same ship on the same day is counted as one occasion. At this pace, we expect her remarkable total of cruise ship welcomes and farewells to pass 1,000 next year. Among those involved with cruise ships in Kagoshima, there is hardly anyone who does not know Hamako. She is affectionately known as “Okāsan,” meaning “Mother,” because of the warmth and dedication she has shown to cruise visitors over so many years. And yes, the lady you remember standing beside me and waving as you returned to your ship was Hamako. It means a great deal to us that this simple farewell stayed in your memory. For us, welcoming cruise guests to Kagoshima is not only about transportation or visiting sightseeing spots. We hope that the personal encounters along the way can also become part of what you remember about Kagoshima. I will be very happy to tell Hamako that the origami crane she made for your daughter and the farewell she gave your family became such a memorable part of your visit. Thank you again for choosing TABIKAGO and for sharing your experience so generously. We are truly delighted that your day in Kagoshima exceeded your expectations and became such a special family memory. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Kagoshima again someday. Warmest regards, TABIKAGO
We saw the essentials on the tour. The guide very cultured and dear. Everything was perfect. The bus perfect. Everyone kind.
An absolutely incredible experience from start to finish with our tour guide Tada, translator Toshi, and our wonderful driver. From the very first communication and booking process through the end of the tour and even the thoughtful follow-up thank you email afterward with pictures—everything was seamless, organized, and exceptionally well planned. Tada and Toshi were incredibly kind, warm, welcoming, and attentive to every detail. I was traveling with my parents in their seventies and my two children, ages 8 and 5, and they made sure every single person felt comfortable, cared for, and included throughout the entire day. Their patience, genuine care, and thoughtful planning made the experience truly special for our whole family. Our Kagoshima tour was unforgettable. We began with the sand bath experience, which was wonderful and very comfortable with private changing rooms and shower facilities. Afterwards, we enjoyed a fantastic soba noodle-making class at a lovely restaurant. Making the noodles together, watching them be prepared, and then sharing a delicious lunch was such a memorable experience that everyone enjoyed. We ended the day with a peaceful stroll through the Samurai gardens, enjoying the beautiful surroundings and traditional green tea. Throughout the entire tour, Tada and Toshi shared so much knowledge and insight, making each place we visited even more meaningful. The handouts he thoughtfully prepared for us were such a special touch and helped us follow along with the day’s plans while keeping wonderful memories of our experience. I truly cannot recommend this tour enough. The attention to detail, communication, kindness, and hospitality shown by Tada, Toshi, and our driver went above and beyond. We are so grateful for the incredible memories they helped create for our family, and we would absolutely love to return to Kagoshima again on our next family vacation.

We hope to welcome you back to Kagoshima in the future.
We booked this tour and paid $1500AU and then was also expected to pay for ferry costs and lunch for the tour guide. We came back almost 2 hours early because the tour guide could not speak English (which is what we paid for ) and it was extremely frustrating and disappointing visiting places and not knowing the history. We should have done the tour independently and it would have been far better NEVER AGAIN
We had an amazing time. I would highly recommend booking with them. It was a wonderful tour and teaching was paid to every detail.

We loved our day with Cozy! She was so great about teaching us about Kagoshima and keeping our kids entertained throughout the day. We were lucky enough to do the ibusuki sand baths, udon noodle making, with an extra stop for ice cream, and then finished at the beautiful Sengan-en. We were picked up from the airport and dropped off at our hotel, making arrangement so easy. They even waited for us to buy snacks after our flight. We left the day energized and happy and loved reliving the day through all of the pictures Tada captured!
