Reaching the summit rewards them with stunning vistas of the Ijen Crater below, a breathtaking combination of volcanic energy and natural beauty that makes the journey truly worth it.
At Ijen Crater, travelers will witness one of nature’s most unique sights, a vast turquoise acid lake set within a rugged volcanic landscape. The Blue Fire of Ijen is a rare natural phenomenon found only in a few places on Earth. Visible in the dark before sunrise, it’s caused by burning sulfur gases that create glowing blue flames along the crater’s surface. Travelers will descend into the crater with a guide to witness this otherworldly sight up close, an unforgettable moment that makes the Ijen hike truly one of a kind.
After completing the hike, Paltuding is the perfect place to rest and unwind. Travelers can relax with a warm drink or local snacks sold by small stalls around the area while taking in the fresh mountain air. It’s also a great time to chat with fellow hikers, reflect on the experience, and enjoy the peaceful scenery before heading back to Banyuwangi or continuing their journey through East Java.

We had to go down a very steep rock path while hundreds of people were going up. It was very difficult, extremely crowded and dangerous. After arriving down, we didn’t see any blue fire, instead some guides were trying to create one. The way up was very hard and dangerous too with absolute confusion and chaos, people trying to go up and down and the guides passing in the opposite direction blocking the people who were trying to go down and delaying all of us. We were standing on the cliff, waiting, not able to move. Finally, the morning sun revealed endless garbage all the way back to the station.
A climb in the middle of the night with hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Not for me. The blue fire hasn't been active for several years and has to be lit by the guides themselves. The view from the summit is certainly pretty and the experience with the anti-sulfur mask is interesting, but it’s not worth the cost. I don’t recommend it if you want wilderness and tranquility.
The blue fire is kind a scam. It does not exist naturally anymore. They make it with gasolin and fire. You also have to pay extra for the glasses to see the blue fire. And we think you need the glasses because with the smoke its otherwise really unhealthy for your eyes. The touristguides kind trying too hard and always want go make pictures of you for there boss and they don‘t really take no for an answer. If you asked them a question you never got a helpful answer. They just made a not funny joke. We got the pickup time about 1 hour bevor which is kind stupid because so you cant really set a alarm at the right time. You have to put it at 23:00 to see when you get picked up which can be as late as 00:30. When we arrive at the entrence of the hike we had to wait over an hour in the freezing cold for the equipement bevor we could start walking. When you are done you can‘t go down early and when you finally can go down you have to wait for all memebers of the group even if they are 30 min late. We wanted to catch a boat to Bali on the same day so we were really anoyed by the hour delay we had in the end… We even asked if we could go down an just order a grab. They said absolutly not. On the otherside the view was absolutly stunning.
The guides were phenomenal. The views were incredible. Highly recommend.
We exchanged messages on Whatsapp right after I applied, and they arranged it for me despite being a bit far away from home. We were grateful that the Medical check, which includes the masks and travel required for the tour, was also made in about 35k. The tour guides are extremely friendly and impressed by the beautiful starry sky as well as the volcano.
The kids were amazed by the Blue Fire! The trek was moderately challenging, but the views of the crater lake made it worth it. Good Feelings Adventure planned the route and schedule professionally, allowing us to enjoy the family experience fully. Meeting local sulfur miners added a meaningful cultural aspect that made the trip unforgettable!
The best views I’ve ever had from a mountain summit sunrise. So totally worth it because it’s the highest rewards for a easy to moderate climb up. Not that cold on top.
Exploring the crater alone gave me a peaceful and reflective experience. The Blue Fire was spectacular, and the turquoise lake with light mist created a calming atmosphere. The local guide shared valuable safety tips. Good Feelings Adventure ensured the trip ran smoothly, meeting all guest needs. This unique experience left a lasting impression that I will never forget.
The night hike to see Blue Fire with my friends was full of stories! The rocky and slippery trail was challenging, but we kept each other motivated throughout. Lots of laughter, funny photos, and moments of challenge made the journey feel alive. At sunrise, the crater view was stunning, and all fatigue melted away. Good Feelings Adventure organized the schedule professionally, and their staff were always friendly and reachable. This is one of the best trips I’ve ever had with friends!
As a solo traveler, the night trek gave me time for personal reflection. The Blue Fire appeared vividly in the dark, and the green crater lake surrounded by light mist was incredibly calming. This experience was a unique adventure that I will never forget.
