The excavations of Herculaneum reveal to the visitor a Roman city buried in a few moments by the violence of Vesuvius in 79 AD, in an excellent state of conservation. The city was covered by a flow of pyroclastic material, which transformed into mud and stratified over the city for about 23 meters. Thanks to the particular type of burial in this site, entire wooden structures, decorations, furnishings for daily use and about 300 skeletons of the victims have remained intact. The remaining time will be due to transportation to and from the attraction.

Roberta met us at the site entrance after we were picked up from the port by Alfredo (?). She gave a lovely tour of the site, and you can tell she was a wealth of knowledge and passionate about the subject. Really brought the ancient site to life. Her explanations in the included museums were also nice. She did a great job navigating us around other groups so that we could see more locations without being crowded. Highly recommend Roberta and this tour! And so glad we chose Herculaneum over Pompeii!
