Downtown Lisbon, also known as the Baixa Pombalina, is the heart of the city and one of its most iconic neighborhoods. After the 1755 earthquake, it was completely rebuilt under an innovative urban plan led by the Marquis of Pombal. The streets are wide, straight, and laid out in a grid pattern, surrounded by buildings with neoclassical architecture. During the tuk-tuk tour, you'll be able to admire places such as Rossio, with its famous cafés and wavy cobblestone pavement, Praça da Figueira, and the grand Praça do Comércio, facing the Tagus River. This area is perfect for experiencing the true spirit of Lisbon — among monuments, historic façades, traditional shops, and the lively street life. It’s also where many locals and visitors cross paths every day. The Baixa is the perfect starting point for getting to know the city, offering fascinating stories, unique views, and an energy that blends tradition and modernity.
Lisbon Cathedral, also known as the Church of Santa Maria Maior, is the oldest cathedral in the city, built in the 12th century after the reconquest of Lisbon from the Moors. With its imposing Romanesque façade and two fortified towers, it is one of the most striking monuments in the capital. Over the centuries, the Cathedral has been modified and restored, incorporating Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements. It survived several earthquakes, including the devastating 1755 quake, remaining a symbol of faith and resilience. Inside, the central nave, main altar, and cloister stand out, where archaeological remains from earlier periods, including Roman and Visigothic, were discovered. Visiting the Cathedral is to dive into Lisbon’s history and feel the spirituality that spans centuries. It’s an essential stop on any city tour.
The Viewpoint das Portas do Sol is one of Lisbon’s most iconic viewpoints, offering a breathtaking panorama over the rooftops of Alfama, the Tagus River, and landmarks such as the National Pantheon and the Church of São Vicente de Fora. Located next to the old city walls, this lookout gets its name from the ancient gates of the Moorish walls that once stood here. It’s an ideal spot to relax, take photos, and enjoy Lisbon’s unique light, especially at sunrise. With a popular terrace and statues like that of Saint Vincent, the city’s patron saint, the place blends history, beauty, and a vibrant atmosphere. It’s also a common stop for many tuk-tuks, trams, and tourists exploring the Alfama district. Stopping here is more than just admiring the view — it’s about feeling the soul of Lisbon. A perfect place to enjoy the city calmly and charmingly, always with the Tagus River on the horizon.
The Viewpoint Senhora do Monte is one of the highest and most impressive in Lisbon, located in the Graça neighborhood. Situated next to the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Hill, the patron saint of pregnant women, it offers one of the widest views of the city: from São Jorge Castle to the Tagus River, passing through Baixa, Avenida da Liberdade, and even the 25th of April Bridge. Less crowded than other viewpoints, it provides a calm and contemplative atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a moment of tranquility with a breathtaking landscape. The chapel and the viewpoint also hold strong spiritual significance for many Lisboetas. It’s a perfect spot for taking photos, watching the sunset, or simply appreciating the unique beauty of Lisbon from above. Stopping here on a tuk-tuk tour is to discover a more serene Lisbon, full of authenticity and charm.
The Church of São Vicente de Fora is one of Lisbon’s most important monuments. The name “de Fora” refers to its location outside the old city walls. Originally, there was a simpler church here dedicated to Saint Vincent, the patron saint of Lisbon. In the 17th century, during the reign of King Philip I, the current church and monastery were built in a grand project combining Mannerist and Baroque styles. The imposing façade hints at an interior decorated with marble and Portuguese azulejos from the 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery houses the tombs of the Braganza dynasty, including several kings and queens. The cloister is a highlight, featuring azulejo panels illustrating La Fontaine’s fables. From the terrace, you have a magnificent view over Alfama and the Tagus River. São Vicente de Fora is a place of great historical, artistic, and spiritual value — an essential stop on any visit to Lisbon.
Feira da Ladra is Lisbon’s oldest and most popular market, known as the city’s flea market. It takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the historic Alfama neighborhood, near the National Pantheon. Here you’ll find a huge variety of products: from antiques, books, furniture, and vintage clothes to handicrafts, souvenirs, and curious objects. The name “Ladra” comes from the word for “thief,” referring to stories of petty thefts at the market, but today it is mainly a vibrant space for trade and popular culture. The market is perfect for those who enjoy hunting for treasures, discovering unique pieces, and feeling the typical Lisbon atmosphere, with friendly vendors and tourists from all over the world. Visiting Feira da Ladra is to dive into the city’s authenticity, in an experience full of color, history, and movement.
In the heart of Alfama, the National Pantheon, also known as the Church of Santa Engrácia, is one of Lisbon’s most imposing buildings. With its grand white dome, visible from many parts of the city, the monument combines history, architecture, and tributes to great Portuguese figures. Construction began in the 17th century but was only completed in the 20th century, giving rise to the popular expression “works of Santa Engrácia” to describe something endless. Inside rest personalities such as Amália Rodrigues, Humberto Delgado, and Eusébio. The nave is spacious, decorated with colorful marble, and offers stunning views from the top of the dome. From the viewpoint, you can admire the Tagus River and the rooftops of Alfama. It’s a must-stop for those wanting to feel the weight of Portuguese history in a majestic setting. Ideal for a cultural break during your tuk-tuk tour of Lisbon!
Alfama is the oldest and most authentic neighborhood in Lisbon, known for its narrow streets, steep hills, and unique atmosphere. This maze of alleys preserves the traditional spirit of the city, with colorful houses, typical azulejos, and flowered balconies. Alfama is one of the neighborhoods where fado is deeply felt, with various houses and taverns where you can listen to this traditional music live, keeping Lisbon’s culture alive. Although fado’s deepest roots are in Mouraria, Alfama is today one of the main places to experience the music and the typical ambiance. In addition, the neighborhood offers important tourist spots such as São Jorge Castle, the National Pantheon, and the Viewpoint das Portas do Sol, which provide stunning views over Lisbon and the Tagus River. Walking through Alfama is like traveling back in time, feeling the authenticity and history of Lisbon at every corner. An unmissable place to discover the soul of the city.

We were advised by a family member to make a private guided visit with Carlos Gaudí. We took a tour of about 3 hours, during which we saw much of Lisbon, visited historic sites, stopped to eat the classic pizza pastel and heard many interesting details about the city and its monuments. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and spoke English fluently. We highly recommend this tour.
