Itinerary

50 min

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), a scholar and statesman who was later deified as Tenjin, the kami of learning. After being exiled to Dazaifu, Michizane died here, and the shrine was established in his memory. Today, it is one of Japan’s most important Tenmangu shrines, attracting students and visitors who pray for academic success. The shrine grounds are known for their beautiful plum trees, symbolic of Michizane’s love for poetry and scholarship.

30 min

Located on a quiet hillside within the grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu, Tenkai Inari Shrine offers a more secluded and atmospheric experience. Dedicated to Inari, the deity associated with prosperity and agriculture, the shrine is approached through a pathway lined with vermilion torii gates. The peaceful setting contrasts with the busier main shrine area, providing visitors with a chance to experience a different aspect of Shinto belief and sacred space.

Lined with traditional-style shops, cafes, and confectionery stores, the street is especially famous for “Umegae Mochi,” a local sweet associated with the story of Sugawara no Michizane. Beyond shopping, the street offers a glimpse into how pilgrimage culture and local commerce have developed together over centuries, creating a vibrant gateway to the shrine.
