We had been to Bangkok previously and seen the temples and markets we wanted to see. We took this trip as it was self-guided, not timed, relatively inexpensive and in a part of the city we hadn’t explored before. The two sites are accessible on the BTS Skytrain, albeit with a short walk/taxi ride either end. The Erawan Museum is a stunning beauty inside, where you need to just take in the architecture and look closely at the beautiful mosaics. The gardens are full of fountains and giant elephant statues you can walk under. People come to pray here, so it’s not exactly a museum. The Ancient City is a vast conglomerate of famous buildings/sites across Thailand - some current, some no longer standing. It was interesting to see craftsmen repairing and maintaining the little mosaics in places. It was very quiet when we were there on a Tuesday afternoon in July, so our photos are stunning. Hiring a golf buggy is a must and actually made this the most fun of all (350 baht for the first hour, 200 baht thereafter- leave a passport or driving licence as a deposit). I have given this a moderate rating as it wasn’t authentic Thailand, but was a very staged experience. It was, however, easy to get drinks, food, toilets, excellent ice lollies - try the coconut- and good photos).
Thank you for choosing Sun Leisure World and for sharing such detailed feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the beautiful architecture and mosaics at the Erawan Museum, as well as exploring the Ancient City by golf cart. We understand that the Ancient City is a recreated cultural attraction rather than an authentic temple experience, so visiting Bangkok’s active temples first can offer helpful context. Your practical tips will be very useful for future visitors planning this self-guided Bangkok experience.
