Itinerary

10 min

Begin at Steiner Tor, the impressive surviving medieval city gate and one of the defining symbols of Krems. Dating in its present form largely from the late 15th century, the gate formed part of the city's defensive fortifications and marked the principal entrance from the direction of Stein. Admire its historic tower, decorative details, coats of arms and inscriptions before entering the atmospheric streets of the old town.

10 min

Follow Obere Landstraße, the historic commercial spine of Krems, lined with elegant town houses, colourful façades and architectural details reflecting the city's prosperity. Once an important route for merchants and traders, the street continues to form the lively centre of the old town, connecting several of Krems' most significant historic landmarks.

10 min

Continue to Rathausplatz, one of the central squares of historic Krems, and admire the town hall and surrounding historic buildings. The square reflects the importance Krems acquired as a prosperous medieval trading centre and provides an excellent setting for appreciating the city's blend of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

10 min

Discover Gozzoburg, one of the most remarkable medieval secular buildings in Krems. Originally associated with the wealthy medieval citizen Gozzo, the complex illustrates the prosperity and influence that wealthy urban families could achieve during the Middle Ages. Its historic architecture and distinctive details make it one of the highlights of Krems' old town.

10 min

Explore Hoher Markt, one of the historic squares at the heart of the old city. Surrounded by centuries-old buildings and connected to the network of medieval streets, the square offers a glimpse into the commercial and social life of historic Krems and provides an opportunity to appreciate the compact urban character of the old town.

10 min

Admire the imposing exterior of the Piaristenkirche, one of Krems' most distinctive historic churches. Perched prominently above the old town, the church combines medieval origins with later architectural additions and forms an important part of the city's historic skyline. Its elevated position also provides attractive views across the surrounding historic centre.

10 min

Continue to St. Veit's Church, one of the most important religious landmarks in Krems. The present Baroque appearance reflects the transformation of the medieval city during the 17th and 18th centuries, while the church's prominent position demonstrates the central role religious institutions played in the development of Krems.

10 min

Walk through the Täglicher Markt, a historic market area that recalls Krems' long tradition of commerce and local trade. Nearby, the Göglhaus adds another striking example of historic urban architecture, with its distinctive façade and details reflecting the wealth and craftsmanship of earlier periods.

10 min

Pause at the Simandlbrunnen, one of Krems' most distinctive historic fountains. Featuring the legendary Simandl figure, the fountain connects the city's architectural heritage with local folklore and traditions. It adds a more unusual and entertaining element to the tour while showcasing a part of Krems' cultural identity beyond its major monuments.

10 min

Finish near the Dominican Church and Körnermarkt, an atmospheric part of the historic centre. This is a quaint town that's home to Marillenschnaps

Krems, first mentioned in an Otto III certificate in 995, is located at the confluence of the Krems & Danube Rivers in the lower Wachau valley. It was a vibrant city in the 11th and 12th centuries. Today, it's the primary producer of Marillenschnaps, an apricot brandy. You pass through the "Old Gate to enter the old town area of Stein where the Piaristenkirche is located. The Piarists is a teaching order that took over the Franciscan church during the reign of Emperor Joseph II.
