A fantastic train journey, around 6hrs one way. Scenic views including fur seals, mountains, spectacular coastline. Great check in - your bags are checked in and transferred to the train so you can fully enjoy the views from the picture windows. A super cafe with fresh food and a bar. Free wifi and if you download the Great Journeys NZ app, there is some information and commentary available. We did the return journey and highly recommend it. A relaxing way to see the East Coast of NZ
We travelled from Christchurch to Blenheim on Scenic Plus, It was a perfect journey. Easy check in, very comfortable seating with amazing views from start to finish of journey. Best of all was the service and quality of food, It was truly 1st class, they even kept coming in to carriage to tell us what to look out for at specific view points of journey. Cannot recommend this enough, the staff are amazing, as is the food and wine choice, It has set the standards high for future travel.
A first class experience in scenic plus with views, food and drink of the highest quality. The staff service was first rate. A truly great experience which I would highly recommend.
Book in process so easy, able to check bags in hours prior. Very comfortable ,very clean, great food, scenery was exceptional. Whole experience was enjoyable
Excellent journey in the premium class with great service and superb food. Uncrowded carriage and good weather so good viewing
The scenery is exceptional. Staff are very helpful. I would recomend it to anyone who enjoys train travel.
Beautiful train journey that I would recommend to anyone. However, there is zero customer service support from Viator or the tour operator. The operator ignored countless emails from myself and from Viator. You are better off booking the train independently of Viator.
We booked Christchuch to Kaikoura where we stayed overnight and then Kaikoura to Blenheim. We were up very early to get to the railway station for the journey from Christchuch to Kaikora. The last hour of the trip was right along the coast where we spotted seals on the rocks. Very smooth journey efficient check in and disembarking. Open carriage was great to be in for part of the journey. To be honest all the seats had big windows and unobstructed views Kaikoura to Blenheim -Through countryside again for the first hour or so then back out along the coast to reach Blenheim. Very smooth, efficient check in and journey.
We booked the Picton > Kaikoura and Kaikoura > Christchurch trips and we really enjoyed it. The views are amazing, the train was comfortable (surprisingly empty), the staff were great and the on board food/drinks were good. The transfer from the ferry to the train is also very well managed so you don't have to worry about missing it (the train actually waits for the ferry which is very convenient in case of bad weather). All in a all, one of the best ways to do the Picton > Christchurch journey!!
Aside for a glitch on their website that I’m convinced changed my booking to a day I wasn’t been in the country…it was a wonderful trip. Poured with rain on the way to Picton but it enhanced the views in my opinion with beautiful sky and water contrasts. Sunny on the way back to Christchurch but I think I preferred the grey skies
