We begin riding out from Tirana’s Old Bazaar, one of the city’s most popular daytime attractions. This lively area, known for its traditional market, local cafes, and street art, is flat and easy to cycle — perfect for starting our cycling tour.
Our adventure begins at the vibrant heart of Tirana, Skanderbeg Square. This central plaza, spanning 40,000 square meters, is surrounded by iconic landmarks like the National History Museum, Opera House, and National Bank. The square is named after Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, and features his impressive 11-meter-tall statue. The square’s eclectic mix of architecture showcases Tirana’s diverse history, from Ottoman-era structures to Fascist and Communist influences, creating a fascinating backdrop for our exploration.
You won't believe that this was Tirana's tallest building until 1970! The Clock Tower has been a city landmark and a symbol of Tirana’s development. Right next to it, we have the statue of Skanderbeg, and we'll talk a little more about his remarkable history.
Next, we delve into the intriguing history of the Enver Hoxha Pyramid. Originally built as a museum dedicated to the former communist leader, it has now been repurposed into a modern cultural and innovation hub, reflecting Albania’s dynamic evolution. We can choose to Climb on top for an amazing view of the city
we will then pass by Bunk'Art 2 which is housed in a former nuclear bunker built during the communist era in Albania. It was designed to protect government officials in the event of a nuclear attack.
We cycle through Pedonalja, one of Tirana’s most popular pedestrian streets, lined with shops, cafés, and colorful buildings. This lively area is perfect for biking — flat, smooth, and full of local life. Just a few minutes away, we reach Toptani Castle, a restored Ottoman-era fortress hidden in plain sight near the city center. Next to the castle, recent excavations have uncovered ancient Illyrian and Roman ruins, including parts of a Roman wall and other foundations dating back over 2,000 years. These discoveries reveal Tirana’s deep historical layers, offering a glimpse into the city’s past long before it became the capital. It’s a unique blend of history, culture, and modern life — all within easy cycling distance.
At this tour stop, we’ll encounter a striking piece of history: a section of the Berlin Wall right here in Tirana. This formidable fragment, once a barrier that brutally divided East and West Berlin, now stands as a poignant symbol of freedom and the end of the Cold War. Gifted to the Albanian people by the German government, it serves as a powerful reminder of the relentless human spirit, the importance of unity, and the ultimate triumph of democracy over oppression. Nearby, we will also visit Postbllok Checkpoint. This intriguing monument is a chilling reminder of Albania's communist past. It features concrete pillars from a labor camp, a bunker typical of the era, and a mine shaft from the infamous Spac labor camp. Postbllok was installed to commemorate the victims of the communist regime and to educate visitors about the harsh realities of that time. It stands as a testament to the resilience of those who suffered and a stark reminder of the importance of freedom and human rights.
We ride past the newly opened Namazgah Mosque, now the largest mosque in Albania and one of the biggest in the Balkans. Located near the city center, it’s a symbol of Albania’s respect for faith and tradition. Albania is often highlighted for its religious harmony — where Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians have lived peacefully together for centuries. This coexistence is a unique feature not only of Tirana but of the country as a whole, setting it apart in the Balkans.
Did you know that Mother Teresa is albanian born ?! The Mother Teresa Square (Albanian: Sheshi Nënë Tereza) is the second largest square in Tirana, Albania. It is named after the Albanian-born Indian Roman Catholic nun, missionary and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa.
We then escape to the serene Grand Park of Tirana, an expansive green space in the heart of the city. This park, with its picturesque artificial lake created in 1955, offers us a peaceful retreat. Designed by architect Valentina Pistoli, it features memorials, an amphitheater, and Tirana’s only zoo. Covering over 1.5 million square meters, the park is a haven of biodiversity and a vital part of the city’s landscape.
Reja, or “The Cloud,” is a modern art installation by Sou Fujimoto in central Tirana. Made of white steel rods, it’s a walkable, see-through structure that hosts events and offers a unique photo spot by the National Gallery.
The Fortress of Justinian in Tirana is a small remnant of the Byzantine-era walls, located near the city center. Once part of a larger castle, today it features a restored stone wall and a quaint courtyard with cafes.
We cycle past the Air Albania Stadium, the national stadium and home of Albania’s football team. Opened in 2019, it’s one of the most modern stadiums in the Balkans, with a striking red-and-black design that reflects the national flag. Built on the site of the former Qemal Stafa Stadium, it also includes a Marriot hotel, shopping areas, and offices — blending sports, business, and city life in one place.

Fun city tour on good bikes guided by the nice and well-informed guide Pano. You are right about orientation points in the city.
Had a great tour!! Stevie, our guide, is a very skilled craftsman who loves his country, city, and culture. History and fun facts and stories alternate. All time for questions and personal attention. To be honest, we were lucky that we were the only 2 participants. In fact, we had a private tour. Stevie took his time and the tour ultimately lasted 5 hours, but it flew by. We highly recommend this bike tour with Stevie to everyone! Tip, because of the heat, a bike tour is more recommended than the hiking tour. And you come to the lake, you come there briefly on foot.
An awesome experience. Leon was a great guide, very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Ride was safe and we saw a lot of the sights of Tirana.
Really great way to see this beautiful city. The bikes were great. Our guide, Pano, was brilliant. Really knowledgeable and interesting. Well recommended
Riding the streets of Tirana, was really awesome! Our guide Genci was really sweet, thoughtful, he took the time to explain everything that the group was interested to know. He didn’t look at the time, just was there for us! Before the end of the trail, we stopped to grab a drink at the Grand park cafe. Highly recommended!!
What an amazing experience! We booked a private bike tour at 5.30pm for our family of four and that turned out to be the perfect way to discover Tirana. We got good electric bikes, making the tour relaxed and doable for everyone. Our guide Santiano told us with a lot of passion and enthusiasm about the history, culture and daily life in Albania. You can tell from everything that he is proud of his country and likes to share his knowledge. We visited the most beautiful places in Tirana and were told all kinds of interesting stories and fun facts along the way. For example, we learned that the inhabitants call their land Shqipëria and themselves Shqiptarë. Because it was a private tour, there was plenty of room to ask questions and the tour was completely tailored to our interests. That made the experience extra personal. This bike tour is without a doubt one of the highlights of our stay in Tirana. We can warmly recommend him to everyone. Thanks Santiano for the fantastic afternoon and all the beautiful stories! 🇦🇱🚴⭐⭐⭐⭐
