we've just returned home from our trip through Ireland and Scotland. The NI Black Taxi Tour was one of the highlights of our trip. Robert was an expert guide: knowledgeable, personable, patient with questions, and sharing a first hand perspective of the historical pain and scars as well as helping us understand current dynamics and economies. It was a rainy August Sunday morning as Belfast enjoyed it's last day hosting the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann (hosting again in 2027). The city was full of celebration and festivities and he swept us into a different world just blocks from the festival which brought people (nearly 1 million) from all over the world, walks of life, communities. Perhaps the balance of understanding history (and current politics and policies) along with heartfelt and respectful cultural exchange contribute to Belfast's thriving future. Thank you for a fantastic tour that we will never forget.
Big Mark took us on a journey through the troubled history of West Belfast and Ireland. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his retelling of history. My wife and I learned so much from this tour and was definitely the highlight of our trip to Belfast. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting the city. Note: Please be aware that there are non official black taxi tours running around offering their services. Book directly with NI Black Taxi Tours and make sure you get into the right cab!
Your trip to Belfast is not complete without a Black Cab Tour with Mark. Mark spoke knowledgeably and impartially about Irish history and the present putting The Troubles into context. He was able to explain to my children (aged 11 and 13) what it was like to see violence on the streets growing up and to genuinely be afraid to sleep in his bed at night. It was a thought provoking and sobering tour which will stay with me for many years to come.
Just back in Leeds after a wonderful time in Belfast i would like to pass on my thanks to Joseph who looked after us so well . It was informative from the start to the finish with many personal stories from Joseph himself
Robert was extremely informative and knowledgeable! Also very neutral in telling the story of “the troubled”. Great job! Highly recommend him!
Fantastic tour. Took some friends from England the tour was knowledgable and gave perspective from both sides of the community
Ourselves and our friends had a fantastic and informative day when we did the tour with Big Mark! Mark was so knowledgeable, and was happy to answer any questions we had, I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in Irish history and is looking for a real understanding as to what it is like to be living in West Belfast.
Big Mark was a fountain of information, showing both sides of the sectarian divide. An eye-opening, thought provoking experience.
Today I booked a 5pm tour slot with Big Mark. I have to say it was excellent. So informative, interesting and emotional. Mark knew everything and answered all my questions. He was so friendly and I really appreciated the fact he informed me of the troubles and gave adequate time to both sides of the conflict. It also helps that he lived through the troubles as a child, and still lives in the West, which really helped me understand the reality of the conflict. I think Northern Ireland is one of, if not the best place to come in Europe. Our friends are lucky enough to live in Holywood and have been kind enough to put me, my wife and kids up for a week. We’ve been around Donegal, Belfast, Portrush and Londonderry. The views are exceptional, people are lovely and the history is deep. I pray that Northern Ireland can heal its past however I’m skeptical. However tours like Mark’s really help you understand the problem’s that have occurred and still exist today. With that sort of knowledge hopefully Northern Ireland can remain one of the best places to visit in Europe. Thanks Big Mark! I will defo recommend!
Mark was a great guide! Very knowledgeable, and not only knows the history well, but had lived it himself. His accounts and stories of the struggles and troubles of ancient and current Ireland were fascinating. 10/10
