Itinerary
Leave Bangkok behind and travel toward Ayutthaya, the former royal capital of Siam. Along the way, your private guide will introduce the city’s history and explain how its location, waterways and international trade helped it grow into one of Asia’s most important kingdoms.
Enter the UNESCO-listed historical area, where temple towers, royal monuments and weathered brick ruins remain across the old island. As you travel between the main sites, your guide will help connect the individual temples into the larger story of Ayutthaya’s prosperity, royal power and eventual fall.
Explore one of Ayutthaya’s most recognizable temples and see the famous Buddha head held naturally within the roots of a growing tree. Walk among the monastery ruins, weathered Buddha images and remains of the central tower while learning why Wat Mahathat once served as an important religious centre of the kingdom. There will be time for photographs and questions without the rushed pace of a large group.
Visit the former royal temple within the grounds of Ayutthaya’s old palace. Its three elegant chedis, built to enshrine the ashes of Ayutthaya kings, remain among the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Walk through the spacious ruins while your guide explains royal ceremonies, palace life and the importance of the temple to the Ayutthaya court.
Pass beside this active Buddhist sanctuary, located next to Wat Phra Si Sanphet and home to one of Thailand’s largest seated bronze Buddha images. Your guide will explain its connection to the former royal-palace area as you continue through the historical island.
Climb toward the temple’s prominent chedi and enjoy views across rows of saffron-robed Buddha images and the surrounding grounds. Learn how the temple became connected with King Naresuan and one of Ayutthaya’s most celebrated military victories. The active monastery also offers a contrast to the abandoned ruins found elsewhere in the historical park.
Step inside one of Ayutthaya’s oldest and most active temples to see the enormous seated Buddha image known locally as Luang Pho To. Observe local worship traditions and discover the temple’s long connection with Chinese and Thai communities. Its lively spiritual atmosphere provides a very different experience from the outdoor archaeological ruins.
Relax aboard a local boat and view Ayutthaya from the waterways that once supported the royal capital. Cruise past riverside temples, local communities and scenes of everyday life around the historic island. Morning and earlier departures offer clear daytime views, while later departures may experience the temples and river in the softer light around sunset. The exact lighting and sunset conditions depend on the selected departure time, season and weather
Explore one of Ayutthaya’s most photogenic riverside temples, designed around a towering central prang surrounded by smaller structures. Walk through the symmetrical complex while learning about its royal origins and Khmer-influenced architecture. The riverside setting and late-afternoon light make this an especially rewarding place for photography.
