My experience at Palmento Grove Ecocultural & Healing Institute was culturally and spiritually centering. From the oral history, to the tour and of course, the preparation of a cultural meal, my time there was uplifting and grounding at once. I highly recommend this experience and give thanks for Uwahnie's knowledge, wisdom, kindness and commitment to the culture. I look forward to returning with friends in the very near future!!
The kind of off-the-beaten-path experience that anyone who is accustomed to backroads travel is looking for in Belize, and anyone who isn't but is willing to try will be glad they did. You'll be rewarded with an extremely memorable half day of your trip that most don't get, as well as the best meal you'll have while otherwise surviving on bland resort food. Just show up and do what you're told and you'll have zero regrets. Hot top: call Palmento directly a day or so ahead of time to confirm your pick up. This got a little garbled with the Viator app, but it all worked out.
Very hands-on experience with cooking, learning about native plants ( herbs & fruit) Super fun cook that guided us through cracking, shredding and squeezing coconut for the sauce, mashing the cooked plantain. Delicious barracuda meal. Then the fun started with the drumming lesson. Great overall connection to Garifuna culture.
An authentic experience delivered with kindness, generosity, and inclusive spirituality - this was the highlight of my trip to this incredible country filled with joyful people and beautiful nature.
What a wonderful experience learning about Garifuna culture, history, spirituality and cuisine. The cooking portion was extremely enjoyable and the eating was tremendous. Thanks so much to our hosts!
It was truly an amazing experience. The place is welcoming to everyone. The staff are very friendly with so much knowledge and history to share with the visitors. The food was great, delicious! We truly enjoyed the day.
Thank you for your visit with us. it was a day well spent.
A wonderful half-day of learning and fun! Super interactive and informal cooking experience— an adventure for adults and our 11 year old. And a delicious meal to boot! The drumming was super cool too. The folks leading this are wonderful, nice, candid and interesting. The whole thing really helped us feel connected to the local culture. It’s definitely a unique experience impossible anywhere else!
We had such an amazing time! Learning about local plants and what thwy are used for. Then cooking delicious food and learning how to husk coconuts and make fresh coconut milk! After we enjoyed the fruits of our cooking labors we received a drum lesson using traditional Garifuna drums and ending it with some dancing! Everyone was so wonderful!
An afternoon at Palmetto Grove was not only a cultural experience, it was a trip back in time. From entering a private island by kayak to seeing their traditional homes, gardens, and well appointed kitchen, we learned not only about their culture, but the fabric of their family. Taking a cooking class taught us about their spiritual values and family history as we learned traditional cooking techniques of the Garifuna people. We experienced this with just two of us, but it would be great for large groups as well. This cooking class has been one of our best and deepest and meaningful adventures in Belize so far. It is also a great meal!
It was a pleasure to provide that euphoric cultural experience. Thanks for visiting.
I joined another couple on this tour for an evening class/dinner. Our host was very hospitable and gracious in assisting me to join another group. The discussion on the Garifuna culture was very informative and interesting. If visiting Hopkins, you should prioritize this type of activity for a great cultural experience! The Hudut meal we made was delicious and made even better by knowing we worked hard splitting and grating coconuts, mashing plantain, and dicing veggies. Rum punch is also on offer if you choose to indulge. This exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend!
