Itinerary

10 min

Located in the oldest heart of Assisi, the Cathedral of San Rufino is the city's mother church and one of its most important religious buildings. Linked to the figure of the saint who first brought Christianity to Assisi, the cathedral is also deeply connected to the memory of St. Francis, who preached several times in the square in front. Its splendid facade makes it one of the most significant examples of Umbrian Romanesque architecture.

10 min

In elegant Italian Gothic style, this building is one of the symbols of Assisi and has housed since 1260 the body of Saint Clare, founder together with Saint Francis of the order of the “Poor Dames of San Damiano”. The facade, made with the typical white and pink stones of Mount Subasio, illuminates in a suggestive way at sunset, creating plays of light that enhance its beauty and the atmosphere of meditation.

10 min

The route winds through the medieval alleys until you reach the lively Piazza del Comune, which has always been the heart of Assisi's cultural and social life. Built on the ancient Roman forum, the square is dominated by the Temple of Minerva, now transformed into the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, and surrounded by the main buildings of medieval civil power, such as the Palazzo dei Priori and the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, which tell the long history of the city.

10 min

Piazza Inferiore di San Francesco is one of the most iconic squares in Italy and represents the scenic setting of the Basilica of San Francesco. Its arcades, dating back to the end of the fifteenth century, wrap the open space welcoming pilgrims and visitors to the tomb of the Poor One, a devotional destination since the thirteenth century.
