1. The dam, Also known as the City built on trees: Due to the soil in Amsterdam consisting of a thick layer of fen and clay, some buildings in the city are built on wooden poles that are fixed in a sandy layer that is approximately 11 meters deep. Since the old days, the houses in Amsterdam were known to have been built on wooden foundation piles that are driven deep into the clay, peat, and water until they reach the first layer of solid sand.
The area is a part of the Red Light District, tob e specific, part of the Old Town area. So this is the oldest part of the city that is why there is a lot of history as well.
Pub The Ape, also known as Int Aepjen in Dutch. Built around 1540 and one out of two remaining wooden buildings left in Amsterdam. Which is very special as there was a big fire in 1452 and after that point the government decided that buildings should have brick facades.
The Waag used to be one of the city gates of Amsterdam, a part of the defensive wall. It was built around the 1400s and is the second oldest building of Amsterdam. Later on it was used as a guild, craftsman’s organizations, situated themselves within the Waag and around the square.
The smallest house of Amsterdam was built around the 1700s and was first used as storage place for the VOC trading company. Later on people started living in the house for a very long time.

Great way to see the downtown area of Amsterdam. Guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The red light area is only about half the tour.
Don’t bother with a tour Read about the Red District then walk around on your own at your own pace. We were rushed through the area by a guide who informed us he had a hangover. Spoke extremely fast and kept at it even when I told him I had a hard time understanding him. We went back the following and really enjoyed walking around on our own and stopped for a drink
Our tour was outstanding! Robin (guide) was very knowledgeable, helpful and fun. I would highly recommend it.
Great stories and knowledge from our guide Ben! He was very informative and provided us with a great experience!
Our tour guide Aarre was great. He was very personable gave us some good historical facts about the area and then also the pros and cons of the red light District in Amsterdam. It looks like the red light district is dying out for sex workers because there was a lot less girls in the windows then 15 years ago the last time I was here. So you might want to take the tour a while it still alive and Vital in the area. He’s an American guy that has lived in Amsterdam for about eight years my understanding.
Great history and information from the guide. Walked us around town and the red light district, and she had a lot of interesting facts to share!
Our tour guide was phenomenal Aarre..was thoroughly amazing. Would highly recommend him to do any tour
Aarre was a brilliant tour guide , he was informative and very entertaining. The facts that Aarre has about the district and its community both socially , economically and politically is quite remarkable . I wouldn’t hesitate to do this tour again if I’m ever back in Amsterdam
This was an okay experience as I was expecting more history and how the red district came to be. Also, the guide wasn't loud enough many times but still recommended if you want recommendations on what to try in red light district :)
Great information and lots of energy. Very thoughtful and made it very enjoyable. I would recommend this tour to any newcomer.
