The reason the houses in Amsterdam are tilted is because of the soil. The city is built on marshlands, which means that everything heavy sinks right into the soil. Therefore, we started to build upon wooden poles to reach a deeper and more sturdy layer of soil that could support the heavy houses.
The Southern Church is another beautiful church designed by Hendrick de Keyser. It was built in between 1603 - 1611.
Today this area is known as the “Stopera”, a combination of STadhuis (Cityhall in Dutch) and Opera. Together they form the Stopera!
After the Thorbecke bridge you will see the famous 7 Bridges! If you are lucky, and there are no other boats, you can see 7 identical stone bridges in a row.

We took a later afternoon boat trip as a family with our 8 year old and absolutely loved it. We’d definitely recommend it. Saar and Diego had to navigate us around a blockade in the canal, and they handled the unexpected change brilliantly, thinking quickly on their feet and adapting the commentary as we took a different route. We still got the full tour, and the commentary was really interesting and just the right amount. Plenty of fun facts without feeling like someone was talking at you the whole time. The orange boat is very eye catching and makes for great marketing. Just be prepared to find yourself in quite a few tourists’ photos! 😂 We had a fantastic time with this very professional team. Thanks so much!
Fantastic experience with friendly crew
Andrew wonderfully explained lots about Amsterdam’s beautiful canals but the 5 star goes to his tossing a Heineken to a bride on another boat that held up cardboard sign saying ‘buy this bride a free drink’ at her canal bachelorette party, which she caught, miraculously. Good job Andrew!
