Nestled on a hillside near Ephesus, this peaceful stone house is one of the most revered Christian pilgrimage sites. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary spent her final years here with St. John the Apostle, who brought her to Ephesus after the crucifixion of Jesus. Over the centuries, the site has welcomed countless pilgrims — including Pope Paul VI (1967), Pope John Paul II (1979), and Pope Benedict XVI (2006), each of whom visited and blessed the shrine. The story of its discovery is just as remarkable. A German nun, Anne Catherine Emmerich, described the house in vivid detail in a vision, despite never having visited Ephesus. Years later, French priests followed her descriptions and uncovered the remains of this very structure. Today, visitors can explore the beautifully preserved house, light a candle, and leave a wish in this serene and deeply spiritual place.

The Temple of Artemis – One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Dedicated to Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon, twin sister of Apollo, this magnificent temple stood as a symbol of faith, beauty, and wealth in ancient Ephesus. Originally built around 650 BC on a site sacred to the Anatolian Mother Goddess Cybele, the temple was funded by King Croesus of Lydia, one of the richest rulers of his time. Ingeniously, it was constructed on marshy ground to help protect it from earthquakes — though over the centuries, natural disasters repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt the structure. Despite its ruins today, the Temple of Artemis remains a place of awe — a reminder of Ephesus’s ancient grandeur and its deep spiritual heritage.

Great experience!

Yasar was an awesome & knowledgeable guide. He took his time and explained everything to us. Ahmet: our driver made sure we got everywhere safely, we felt very comfortable. Thank you both. If you are hesitant about booking third party- please don’t be. We were back on ship no problem. Saw many cruisers that had same experience!

Great private tour for cruisers

Shoutout to our guide Gulsah for a great tour as part of our cruise stop in Kusadasi, as the private tour allowed us to be largely self-paced. Had an early visit to Ephesus which helped to avoid the crowds and take in the views, as well as got lucky with seeing Garfield the cat! We were also the first into the Terrace Houses (tickets purchased on-site) which allowed for comfortable viewing. The stop at the House of the Virgin Mary allowed for quiet and peaceful strolling, religious context aside. Overall would recommend!

An incredible trip

Aslan was so knowledgeable and helpful throughout the entire tour. When we got off the port he found us straight away, explained the day and itinerary and made sure we were happy. Transport was waiting at the port and after every stop. Ephesus was absolutely incredible, so many amazing things to see and learn about. Aslan knew all of the best places to go to get great sights of the library and grand theatre. The tour was a great length (we booked the half a day trip), and we weren't rushed at all. The group was small and felt very calm and relaxed.
