Description

Join us on a scenic 4-hour small group minibus tour from Ísafjörður to one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, Dynjandi. Travel through the breathtaking landscapes of the Westfjords with photo stops at stunning coastal viewpoints along the way. Keep an eye out for seals resting on the shoreline, seabirds soaring overhead, and even the occasional whale spotted in the fjords. At Dynjandi, you’ll have time to walk up to the waterfall and experience the beauty of the Westfjords’ most famous natural attraction. On the return journey, we stop in the charming fishing village of Flateyri. If time allows, guests are welcome to enjoy a quick coffee, pastry, or light lunch at the local café while soaking in the atmosphere of this historic village. Departure times vary according to your ship’s schedule. We will send your exact departure time the evening before your tour. Tours typically depart around 90 minutes after your ship arrives and disembarkation begins.

Itinerary

Framed by steep mountains and wrapped around a quiet harbor, Ísafjörður is the cultural and economic hub of the Westfjords — and your starting point for today’s journey. Though small in size, this historic fishing town carries a big personality. Colorful 19th-century houses still line the old streets, and the harbor bustles with life, from working boats to adventurous kayakers. As we pass through town, you’ll get a glimpse of daily life here in Iceland’s most remote region — where modern life blends effortlessly with old traditions. If time allows, we may swing past landmarks like the old hospital-turned-cultural-center or the Maritime Museum housed in one of the oldest buildings in Iceland. Ísafjörður is more than just a gateway to nature — it’s a living community with deep roots in fishing, folklore, and resilience. From here, we’ll head into the fjords for a taste of Iceland’s wild, untouched beauty.

Rising like a shimmering bridal veil from the cliffs of Arnarfjörður, Dynjandi is not just a waterfall — it’s a full-body experience. The name means “thundering,” and you’ll understand why as soon as you step out of the vehicle and hear its roar echo through the canyon. At 100 meters tall, with a wide, tiered cascade that narrows elegantly as it climbs, Dynjandi is often called the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland — and for good reason. A short path leads from the parking area up toward the base of the falls, passing several smaller waterfalls along the way. Guests are welcome to hike as far as they like, or simply admire the view from below, where the mist dances in the sunlight and seabirds wheel overhead. Surrounded by dramatic fjord scenery, this is one of those places that stops time. Whether you’re snapping photos, soaking in the power of nature, or just breathing the clean mountain air, Dynjandi leaves a lasting impression long after the tour ends.

15 min

Tucked along the calm shoreline of Önundarfjörður, Holtsbryggja is a small pier and scenic viewpoint nestled in the village of Holt. This peaceful stop gives you a perfect snapshot of rural life in the Westfjords—where mountains meet sea in serene isolation. From the pier, you’ll enjoy a sweeping panorama over the fjord and surrounding peaks, often mirrored perfectly in the still waters below. If you’re lucky, you might spot seabirds gliding above or see locals launching small fishing boats, continuing traditions that go back generations. On calm days, the silence here is broken only by the lapping waves and the occasional call of an Arctic tern. It’s an ideal place to stretch your legs, breathe in the salt air, and take a quiet moment before continuing to Dynjandi. Whether you’re looking to snap a photo, admire the remote charm of the region, or simply soak in the atmosphere, Holtsbryggja offers a pause that feels like a world away.

The guide/driver was very nice and had good information and stories about Iceland and the sights. Dynjandi was gorgeous and we had a little over an hour there. We had a few other stops for photo ops. The bus was comfortable, we had 15 people on the tour. I would highly recommend this tour.

Beautiful waterfall.

The drive to the main waterfall was beautiful. The tunnels are long and have interesting rules. Our live guide was not as talkative as others and did a good job. Plan for food before or after. The small restaurant was crowded and the other restaurant in town wasn’t open. Overall good day.

The dynjandi falls were...

The dynjandi falls were beautiful but the white sand beach was not worth the stop. The little town of Flateryi was nice and it would have been nice to have more than 15 min there. The driver drove very fast and was an aggressive driver which made the drive very bumpy and stressful instead of relaxing. He also told stories that were gruesome and he cursed- and there were children in our group.

Nice half day waterfall trip.

Was a very nice experience. There were 3 photo stops in addition to the waterfall. There was sufficient time at the waterfall if you are fit and ambitious, the trail with quite steep and rocky. My knees aren’t great so I only went part way up. Also note that if you go on a sunny day near noon, the sun will be right above the waterfall making pictures very difficult. Sun isn’t usually the issue in Iceland, but we had a lovely day, go figure. Guide was good, gave us little tidbits about the area.

So we were supposed to go on this excursion but our cruise ship was not able to tender. The company refunded our money before I even contacted them. Would totally book again with them.

Great Customer Service for Cruise Ship Passengers

Our port was canceled at Isafjordur, so I was unable to take the tour. I wanted to leave a review either way as this company was so easy to deal with, and they refunded my tour (and many others on board) due to the port cancellation. I highly recommend booking Valkyrie if you are on a cruise ship. Their customer service is exceptional, and they even empathized with us having our plans disrupted.

Over crowded and long drive

We arrived at the falls to find 10 motorcoaches, multiple small busses and cars, so nearly 500 people at the falls. The path leading to the top was so congested it was not safe to climb in my opinion. The image and description mentioned seals, but there were none on this tour. All in all, a long drive for a mediocre experience. Our guide was excellent, I would take tours with this company again.

Operator response

Thank you for your feedback. We’re very glad to hear that you found your guide excellent and that you would tour with us again. Unfortunately, Dynjandi can become very busy when several cruise ships are visiting the Westfjords on the same day, and the number of visitors at the waterfall is completely outside of our control. We always do our best to provide the best possible experience despite the crowds. Regarding the seals, they are wild animals and sightings can never be guaranteed. They are frequently seen along our route, which is why we mention the possibility, but unfortunately they don’t always make an appearance. We appreciate you joining us and hope to welcome you back for another tour in the future!
