Two things are important to remember - The architecture of the building (Palau National de Montjuic) is absolutely gorgeous, but also the way it is integrated into the landscape, with several artificial waterfalls, in steps, which creates a perfect whole - The permanent or temporary exhibition halls present the history of the Catalan language and culture In addition, on Saturdays, after 6:00 PM, access is free, but you must make a prior reservation online in advance. There are other days with free access throughout the day, but you must consult their website. I also recommend a visit to the roof of the building, the views are superb, even if we had restricted access to the side facing Plaza España and I would have liked to have had a perspective in that direction as well. You will certainly spend at least two hours visiting this museum
We arrived at 3pm only to find the museum was closed. We were not told the opening times were different on a Sunday so presumed they would be the same
Visiting Barcelona’s National Art Museum of Catalonia is an unforgettable journey through time. Housed in the majestic Palace, its historic galleries hold breathtaking Romanesque and Modernist treasures. However, the ultimate highlight is the panoramic view from here, offering a postcard-perfect look at Plaça d'Espanya, the Magic Fountain, and the sweeping Barcelona skyline stretching toward the sea, especially at sun set. Highly recommended to descend from here towards the fountains to complete the evening show.
The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) built for the 1929 International Exposition, this monumental Neo-Baroque palace features a majestic dome inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica and a massive Oval Hall (Sala Oval), one of Europe’s largest event spaces. The collection is organized into four main galleries: Art Romànic, Art Gòtic, Art de Renaixement i Barroc, and Art Modern. MNAC is a premier cultural landmark where architectural grandeur, panoramic city views, along with fountain are views and unparalleled medieval to modern masterpieces converge to preserve the soul of Catalan identity.
when booking with this tour company make sure all couples book using only one invoice. If not you will get a second guide when you could have gotten the same tour for less. Still waiting for a price adjustment
I purchased tickets online. BUYER BEWARE!! I bought the Family tickets for my family of five. On arrival I was told that this type of ticket could not be used by us. My interpretation of what was said is the reason was that we are not locals and the children are too old. The purchase T&A’s did not translate to English on the website. So, if I made a mistake it was an honest one. The staff flatly refused to give me a refund or offset the cost of the family pass (50 E) against 5 MORE TICKETS! (60 E) I was advised to email the museum to request a refund, which I did. After an early initial polite response, I then was ghosted. My advice, buy the tickets at the door.
Be Aware of Pick Pockets at this site. 3 middle aged women stole my necklace with a cross and a Star of David whilst trying to put rosemary twigs on me yesterday near the park area. They were very quick to distract me and worked together and within seconds they got what they wanted and I was unaware until hours later. I was targeted because I was walking by myself.
The museum includes a variety of art--Romanasque, medieval, modern, etc. The galleries are arranged beautifully and descriptions in English are included for most art.
A very good museum, with some fascinating and lesser known art by famous painters. Didn't realize the complex has six museums all together, so it would be great for a day long excursion. Wonderful views of the city and some local musicians playing outside. The only issue was how much uphill walking there was, which probably should be featured clearly in the description. Otherwise we would have given it five stars!
Purchase tickets in advance and plan to spend time in the area! Wonderful architecture & amazing collection, well curated!
