Great fun with Captain Fred. The jet ride was very scenic. The village we visited made us so welcome with a generous and delicious lunch prepared by the ladies. Plenty of singing dancing and laughter with the quirky Fijian sense of humour.
Second trip for us. This time took the grandkids 14 and 11. Our Captain Fabulous Freddy expertly guided our jet boat through the twists and turns of the shallow Sigatoka river to the village of Toga - pronounced Tonga. The path up to the village was rough and steep but worth it. A tour of the village and the real Fiji awaited us. Don’t expect a picture postcard tropical village with thatched huts like you see on tv! This is real life. The houses are simple and made from whatever materials are to hand. Dogs, pigs, goats and chickens wander at will. As do the village children who are delightful. A solemn kava ceremony followed by a simple buffet lunch seated on the floor, followed by singing and dancing with the locals. Great fun. Beautiful people living simple lives in a rustic setting. Learning the history of the people and their culture. The jet boat ride back was exhilarating. The 360 degree spins will soak you but you’ll love it! We took gifts of stationery ( pencils and colouring books etc for the children) and toiletries to present to the villagers. Some visitors donated cash. The villagers deeply appreciated everything. It is not expected but very much appreciated. The villagers in Toga are self sufficient farmers who live very humble and simple lives. There are 52 villages along the river and the jet boats visit a different village every day. Highly recommend especially for children to expand their horizons.
Bula Vinaka Ellen, There is no greater compliment than welcoming guests back for a second Sigatoka River Safari—and this time being able to share the experience with your grandchildren makes it even more special. A huge vinaka to Fabulous Freddy! Navigating the twists, turns and shallow waters of the Sigatoka River takes considerable skill, and we're delighted he delivered the perfect combination of an informative journey upstream and an exhilarating, soaking-wet ride home. We particularly appreciate your description of Toga Village as "the real Fiji." Our partner villages are not recreated or staged for tourism. They are genuine, working communities where families live, farm, raise their children and continue traditions that have been passed down through generations. That authenticity is at the very heart of the Sigatoka River Safari. We're pleased your grandchildren had the opportunity to experience the traditional kava ceremony, share a meal with the villagers, learn about their culture and history, and then finish with singing and dancing. Experiences like these can open young people's eyes to a very different way of life and remind us that happiness, family and community aren't measured by material possessions. Thank you also for your thoughtful gifts of stationery and toiletries. Gifts are certainly never expected, but the generosity of guests who choose to bring something for the community is always sincerely appreciated. And after all of that culture, learning and hospitality, there is nothing quite like Fabulous Freddy pointing the boat downstream and finishing the day with a few 360-degree spins! Thank you for returning to us and, most importantly, for bringing the next generation with you. We hope your grandchildren remember the people of Toga Village and their adventure on the Sigatoka River for many years to come. Vinaka Vakalevu, Jay Whyte Owner/operator Sigatoka River Safari
This was the most fun and educational tour of our stay. Captain Fini was exceptionally good as a guide and jet boat driver, would highly recommend
Bula Vinaka, We're thrilled to hear that the Sigatoka River Safari was both the most fun and educational tour of your stay in Fiji. That's exactly the balance we aim for—plenty of excitement on the river while also giving our guests a genuine insight into the history, people and culture of the Sigatoka Valley. A special vinaka to Captain Fini. She's an exceptional jet boat driver, but equally important is her ability to share the stories of the river and its communities in an entertaining and engaging way. We'll make sure your wonderful comments are passed on to her. Thank you for highly recommending the experience. We hope the memories of your day on the Sigatoka River stay with you long after your Fiji holiday. Vinaka Vakalevu, Jay Whyte Owner/operator Sigatoka River Safari
The entire experience was delightful. Captain Jack was knowledgeable and humorous. We would ask for him again. The visit to the village was an experience we will always treasure.
Bula Vinaka Peter It's wonderful to hear that your entire experience with us was such an enjoyable one, and particularly that your time in the village created memories you will always treasure. A special vinaka to Captain Jack. His combination of local knowledge, storytelling and sense of humour has a wonderful way of bringing the Sigatoka River and its history to life. We'll certainly let him know that you'd happily request him again! We're especially pleased that the village visit was the lasting highlight. While the jet boat provides plenty of excitement, the heart of the Sigatoka River Safari has always been our partner villages and the opportunity for guests to genuinely connect with the people, culture and traditions of the Sigatoka Valley. Thank you for choosing to spend part of your Fiji holiday with us. We hope those treasured memories bring a smile whenever you think back to your day on the river. Really great day out! It mixed a bit of adventure along with the wonderful Fijian culture. Our jetboat Capt ‘Hot’ Laps told us a lot about the village culture as he drove us up past his village to the drop off for the ‘village of the day’ experience. Then soaked us all with 360s and a much faster ride back down to the buses. The village experience was great, the food was simple and nice, and the locals don’t take themselves too seriously and it was amusing as they had kinda forgotten a tour group was coming for lunch - fijian time’. The local pastor had to rustle up the men for the ‘welcome ceremony’. The ceremony and lunch finished with a local singalong and dancing. Its true when they say Fijians are a happy people.
Bula Vinaka Rory We're delighted you enjoyed the combination of adventure and authentic Fijian culture that makes the Sigatoka River Safari such a memorable day out. A special vinaka to Captain "Hot" Laps! Having grown up in the Sigatoka Valley, the river and surrounding villages really are his backyard. When you're travelling with Laps, he's not simply pointing out places on a map—he's taking you past his own village, sharing stories about his neighbours, his community and the way of life he grew up with. That personal connection is something very special. It sounds like you also experienced a little genuine "Fiji Time" in the village! The issue was there was a funeral in the neighbouring village, which they attended and then made their way home to Naveyago to welcome the vistors. These are real, living communities rather than staged tourist attractions, and occasionally village life has its own timetable. Often those unexpected moments become some of the best memories of the day. We're pleased you enjoyed the welcome ceremony, village lunch, singing and dancing. Fijians certainly don't take themselves too seriously, and once the music starts, it doesn't take long before guests become part of the fun as well. And after all that culture and hospitality, it sounds like Laps made sure you didn't leave too dry—360s, plenty of spray and a faster run back down the Sigatoka River! Thank you for recommending the Sigatoka River Safari as a "must do." We hope the laughter, people and memories of your day in the valley stay with you for many years to come. We did the Jet Boat trip with River Jets Fiji and it was awesome! We were picked up from Fiji Hideaway Resort on the Coral Coast and driven to the check in at Sigatoka. The check in was completed within just a few minutes. Then we were back in the van and driven to the boat launch. The launch had changing facilities, bathrooms and a small shop. The staff allowed us to prepare and then our pilot Ace had us in the boat and on our way in no time. The staff did not rush us at all and yet the whole process was streamlined and efficient. You often hear the phrase "Fiji Time", but this crew was right on time, friendly and professional. The boat trip up the river was scenic and enjoyable. The locals that were using the river to swim, fish and wash their horses all enthusiastically waved at us as we went by. When we got to the furthest point Ace stopped the boat and gave us some history about the significance of the area and the history. He was well spoken, informative and answered all of our questions. Then the real adventure began. The trip back down the river was full of speeding through corners and 180 degree turns with water splashing everywhere. It was a blast! All of us had huge smiles on our faces. I highly recommend this activity and this company. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. Ace was absolutely the best. Don't miss out on this when you are in Fiji!
Bula Vinaka, We loved reading your account of the River Jets Fiji experience—from the smooth pickup and check-in right through to those big smiles on the ride back down the Sigatoka River! We're particularly pleased you recognised how organised and professional the team was. We certainly enjoy the relaxed Fijian way of life, but when it comes to looking after our guests, safety and running our tours on time, we take that responsibility very seriously. A huge vinaka to Ace, who will be thrilled to read your comments. The Sigatoka River is so much more than simply a place to drive a jet boat, and our captains love stopping along the journey to explain its history, the surrounding communities and the importance the river continues to have in everyday life. Seeing people swimming, fishing, washing horses and simply going about their day is all part of experiencing the real Sigatoka Valley. And then, of course, there's the ride home! Once Ace has shared the stories and history, it's time to let the jet boat do what it does best—speed, tight turns, plenty of spray and a whole lot of fun. Thank you for recommending River Jets Fiji so enthusiastically. We're delighted you had such a fantastic experience and hope we can get you back on the river again the next time you're in Fiji. Great experience for the whole family, youngest 8. We had Laps as our captain. He was very knowledgeable, funny, and an exciting driver! In August it was not hot, but still comfortable temp enough for getting wet. Sit in the back if you really want to get drenched. The boats are fast! The village was an amazing experience too. It was a couple villages over from where Laps lived so he knew everything about it. The locals were very nice and welcoming. The food was authentic, local, and very good. After the meal we danced with the villagers. Bring a change of shirt for afterwards. You don’t need water shoes. Women need to wear a sarong (provided) in the village, shorts and pants are not allowed (but ok once covered with the sarong). We brought our waterproof go pro and got some great video on the boat and of the 360 spins. You need to be able to get up some steps to get to the village, although they rotate the villages they visit so that may not be the case every time. Our “chief” the oldest guy on our tour was in his late 80s and he was able to make it up the steps with assistance just fine. The van drive from Denarau is about 90 minutes each way but the van is a comfortable, professional tour type van and if you take the morning trip you can sleep on the way. There is a stop along the way at a little strip mall with very nice but probably overpriced souvenirs, Nike store, and coffee shop. There are bathrooms there and at the boat launch. There were acceptable from a western standard bathrooms at the village we went to as well, but that is apparently hit or miss. We had an amazing time. Definitely worth the time and cost. Like their slogan says, this is a “Must Do In Fiji!”
Bula Vinaka, What a fantastic and detailed account of your day with us. We especially love hearing that the experience worked so well for everyone in the group—from your 8-year-old through to to visiting "chief" in his late 80s! A special vinaka to Captain Laps. Having grown up in the Sigatoka Valley, this really is his backyard, so the river, villages and people aren't simply part of a tour for him—they're home. As you discovered, he combines that local knowledge with plenty of humour, some serious jet boat skills and, of course, those famous 360-degree spins! We're particularly pleased that the village experience made such an impression. The warm welcome, traditional food, cultural protocols and dancing are all genuine parts of village life, and our partner communities take enormous pride in sharing their culture with visitors. It's great to hear that your family embraced the experience so wholeheartedly. Thank you also for mentioning the assistance provided to the "Chief" in your group. Our team will always do everything reasonably possible to help guests participate safely and comfortably. Each of our partner villages is different, so accessibility can vary, but we're proud of the way our captains, guides and villagers work together to assist guests when required. And your advice about sitting at the back if you want the full "getting drenched" experience is spot on! A change of shirt is never a bad idea after a few spins on the Sigatoka River. Thank you for such a comprehensive recommendation and for recognising the value of the experience. When a guest finishes their day agreeing with our slogan—**"A Must Do In Fiji!"**—we know our team and village partners have done their job. We hope the memories, laughter and friendships from your day in the Sigatoka Valley stay with your family for many years to come. Vinaka Vakalevu, Jay Whyte Owner/operator Sigatoka River Safari
As a family of four (two adults and two children), we had the most incredible experience on the Sigatoka River Safari. From beginning to end, everything was so well organised and exceeded our expectations. The hotel pickup was seamless, and we enjoyed the drive into Sigatoka, where we had a little time to browse the lovely local shops and pick up a few souvenirs before continuing on. The jet boat ride itself was absolutely spectacular! A special shout-out to our captain, **Captain Laps**, who was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgeable, happily answered all of our questions, and made the whole journey both entertaining and informative. The visit to the village was truly breathtaking. Spending time with the local Fijian community and experiencing such a warm, genuine welcome was something we'll never forget. The hospitality we were shown was extraordinary, and it was a real privilege to learn more about their culture and way of life. It was honestly a life-changing experience for our family. The ride back was the perfect finish, with a couple of exhilarating 360-degree spins that had us all laughing and cheering. It was such a fun and memorable way to end an already amazing day. This wasn't just an excursion—it was an experience we'll remember forever. If you're visiting Fiji, do yourself a favour and book the Sigatoka River Safari. It is an absolute must-do!
Bula Vinaka, To hear you describe the Sigatoka River Safari as a "life-changing experience for your family" is incredibly special and means a great deal to me personally and the team. This is precisely how I felt at 13 yrs old and why the Safari idea was born. We're delighted that everything flowed seamlessly from your hotel pickup and time exploring Sigatoka town through to the journey into the valley, the jet boat adventure and, most importantly, your time in the village. A huge vinaka to Captain Laps, who will be thrilled to read your comments. Our captains aren't simply there to drive the boat—they are storytellers and proud ambassadors for the Sigatoka Valley, and they love answering questions and helping guests understand the river, its history and the communities that have called it home for generations. Your comments about the village experience particularly resonate with us. The villages we visit are real communities, not staged tourist attractions, and the hospitality you experienced comes genuinely from the people themselves. They open their homes, share their food, culture, traditions and stories, and welcome our guests as friends. Knowing that your children were able to share that experience with you and that it had such a profound impact on your family is exactly why this tour means so much to us. And, of course, there's no better way to finish an emotional day in the village than heading back down the Sigatoka River with everyone laughing and cheering through a few 360-degree spins! Thank you for describing the Sigatoka River Safari as an "absolute must-do in Fiji." We couldn't ask for a greater endorsement. We hope the memories and friendships your family made in your village stay with you for many years to come and we hopefully get to welcome you back home soon!! We had the best day and experience doing the jet boat safari by Sigatoka river safari. Captain Jack was fantastic, experienced and answered everything and more. He was great, fantastic sense of humour, and with interacted with everyone, including the little ones. We felt very safe. What a driver of that boat he was. The village of Tonga was humbling, welcoming and full of kindness and hospitality. The banquet the women made was incredible and the men’s welcome and kava demonstration was the real deal. The little children were a highlight with their dancing. We met such lovely people. This will be a once in a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten, we will always remember village Tonga. Thank-you for giving us this opportunity.
Bula Vinaka, Reading your review was incredibly rewarding for our entire team. Knowing that your day on the Sigatoka River created memories that will last a lifetime is the greatest compliment we could receive. Captain Jack will be absolutely delighted to hear your kind words. His passion for the river, his sense of humour and his ability to make guests of all ages feel included are what make him such a favourite with so many visitors. We'll be sure to pass your compliments on to him. We're especially pleased that your visit to your village of Toga Village left such a lasting impression. The warmth, kindness and generosity shown by the villagers is something that can't be manufactured—it comes from genuine Fijian hospitality. From the traditional welcome and kava ceremony to the incredible banquet lovingly prepared by the women and the joyful performances by the children, it's a privilege for us to help connect our guests with these remarkable communities. Thank you for recognising that authenticity. Our partner villages generously open their homes and share their culture, traditions and everyday lives with visitors, and reviews like yours mean so much to them. Thank you for choosing the Sigatoka River Safari and for so highly recommending the experience to future travellers. We hope that one day you'll return to the Sigatoka Valley and renew the friendships you made in Toga Village. Vinaka Vakalevu, Jay Whyte Owner/operator Sigatoka River Safari
This is easily my favorite experience I’ve done in Fiji. Not only is the jet boat ride a thriller, but the cultural experience is top-notch without being cheesy. The locals welcome you into their village with a tour and share such a vast amount of cultural local feel. The food was wonderful. The ceremony was wonderful and the experience to learn about the locals was wonderful for myself and my children. Captain Jack was a wealth of knowledge and answered every one’s questions. We received so much information on the bus ride over as well about Fiji and the history. This tour is worth the value
Bula Vinaka, We're truly honoured to hear that this was your favourite experience in Fiji. Receiving feedback like yours means so much to our entire team because it reflects exactly what we set out to achieve—an adventure that is exciting, authentic and deeply connected to the people of the Sigatoka Valley. It's wonderful to know you felt the cultural experience was genuine. Our partner villages aren't staged attractions; they are real communities that generously welcome guests into their homes and share their traditions, customs and way of life. We're delighted that both you and your children were able to experience this firsthand and enjoyed the traditional ceremony, delicious village feast and warm hospitality. A special vinaka to Captain Jack, who will be thrilled to know his knowledge and enthusiasm helped make your day so memorable. He loves answering questions and sharing the history of the Sigatoka River and Fiji, and it's great to hear the journey to and from the valley was just as informative as the safari itself. Thank you for your wonderful recommendation and for recognising the value of the experience. We hope to welcome you and your family back to the Heart & Soul of Fiji for another unforgettable adventure. Vinaka Vakalevu, Jay Whyte Owner/operator Sigatoka River Safari
