It was a great excursion. If you are into kayaking, outdoor activity, and adventure, it is very fun. Note, it's much more of an active kayak adventure than it is a glow in the dark adventure. There are definitely some situations with incoming traffic and crowding, but if you are open minded and prepared, you should enjoy it.
Fabulous experience. Kayaking in the dark under the moonlight as your only guide was exhilarating. There are some curves, but the river is not that bad, and it is only waist high all in all not too difficult to navigate. We didn't get to see many bioluminescent fish right of the bat the guide had to provide a tarp to create a little more darkness for us to be able to see the species. It was fun and a first experience for us. Will do it again. Lots of mosquitos though, they attack even when wearing repellent!!!
We kayaked out to a lake in the evening and experienced the bio fluorescent in the water. We enjoyed the exercise and kayaking in the dark
Booked the tour with pick up from San Juan. The pickup was on time, comfortable drive to get to the venue. 1-1.5 mile kayaking in dark to get to the spot was interesting, well managed. The kayaking back was also fun. The tour operator did everything right as advertised and provide the best experience. The bioluminescence experience was below par. The operator mentioned the current levels are at 20% or so. It's natural phenomenon, not much the tour operator could do. Advertising better times to visit could help. We enjoyed kayaking more than the bioluminescence.
That you’ll be wading in waist deep water to get on the kayak. Not recommended for little kids. Also that even if you go during a new moon as we did, there’s so much ambient light that you have to go under the tarp to see the bioluminescence. All in all a lot of paddling for not much to see. But the driver of our van was great and we felt that our stuff was safe in the van during the kayaking.
The most fun part was kayaking at night through the lagoon. We loved it! The guides were good. Make sure to wear water shoes as you have to walk out to the kayaks.
The experience was phenomenal- the team were well organized ! ( port a potties needed)
Wear water shoes - try to go when it’s a sunny day & low moon light! But if not it’s a great experience either way! Great people !
The actual experience of the bioluminescence was cool. We weren’t prepared for the long van ride with no real explanation of where we were going or what it was about. A little explanation on the van ride would have been helpful. There were 19 tandem kayaks in our group and only about 6 of them really knew how to kayak, making the kayaking less than ideal. We were picked up at 5:45 and got back at 11:45, longer than we expected. Communication could have been better.
First time kayakers BEWARE this is not geared for inexperienced paddlers- darkness limits vision snd there are many low tree branches to avoid to not get hit in face
