Then came Alleppey, which was probably the biggest change in pace during the entire six days. The houseboat experience was one of those parts of the trip that sounded touristy when we first read about it, but in reality it became one of our favourite memories. Once we were out on the quieter waterways, there really wasn't much to do except sit, eat, talk and watch life along the banks. Small boats passed us, people were going about their normal routines, and the whole place seemed to move more slowly. After the hills and backwaters, Kovalam was a very good way to finish. We were ready for some time near the coast by then, and having a more relaxed final section made the itinerary feel balanced rather than ending with another packed sightseeing day. The private vehicle was also more important than we expected. Moving through several destinations in six days could easily become tiring if you are constantly arranging taxis or handling luggage between different connections. The Periyar Lake boat ride also gave the day a completely different pace. After being on the road and walking around, it was nice to sit down and simply watch the forest around the water. We weren't treating it like some wildlife checklist either. Just being out there was enjoyable. Another thing worth mentioning was the private car. With only four days, wasting time sorting taxis every morning would have been annoying. Having the transport already arranged meant we could get moving when needed and still make the occasional short stop without turning the whole schedule upside down. Our driver was easy company throughout. Helpful when we had questions, quiet when we just wanted to look outside, and never made us feel awkward about stopping somewhere for a snack or photograph.
