Nabil was a very nice guide and the driver Soleh drove us nicely around, we are very good about them 👍 The waterfalls are beautiful and Nabil first took us to the quieter waterfalls and they were beautiful and it wasn't very crowded. Then we went to the big waterfall and it was busy but also very beautiful. The next day we were picked up at 1:00 am and went to Bromo by Toyota Landcruiser. The sunrise was really beautiful to see, it was breathtaking! Then we went to the foot of the crater and climbed up there, that was also beautiful! Unfortunately, Ijen was closed due to forest fires and we couldn't go there. Viator and Smartway tours have offered a refund for this. Nabil thank you for the nice guide you were for us!

In general, it was not a bad experience. There is little communication between those who organize the tour and the client. For example, I do not find it right to inform the client which facility they will sleep in for the two nights. There is little communication between those who organize the tour and those who drive and have to take you to the places. For example, our driver did not know where we were supposed to sleep the second night...and neither did we...so we had to contact the organizers via WhatsApp...all this creates confusion. For the rest, those who acted as our guides on the tours were very good. Sandi as a guide at the Tumpak waterfall and Sahari at Mount Ijen. Truly very good. The guide at Mount Bromo, on the other hand, just showed up and simply told us you can go up the mountain...hehehe. Our driver Abas was very professional, polite, and helpful. He did not speak English, but we understood each other using Google Translate.

What can I say about this road trip! We chose the Premium Homestay option. Let's start from the beginning, at the time of initial contact. At the beginning, everything goes well until the booking. Once it is done, you have to wait weeks to get an answer, then as soon as you threaten to cancel, they answer you within 5 minutes. Regarding the stay, you have to organize everything yourself. The driver, with whom it is impossible to communicate without Google Translate, does not know where he is supposed to go. We had to contact the agency ourselves so that they would give the hotel address, and the same thing happened the next day; this caused us to lose hours because the driver will not drive anymore if he does not have the address. When we call the number on their website, it is not even assigned. Regarding the meals, act as if they did not exist. We received an industrial croissant as lunch or breakfast, I don't know, and a piece of brioche with an egg and a slice of cheese as lunch for the last day; in short, haute cuisine. We found ourselves totally alone during this trip and often had to wait several hours to get a response. We went there while Mount Bromo was closed, so we asked for an alternative and they offered us a tour of the city where the first day's hotel was, something we had already done on the way to the hotel. This alternative seemed to be considered equal to Mount Bromo because if we had chosen it, we would have received no refund. Regarding the refund, we had to fight again, just like during the whole trip. After not wanting to refund us, they offered us 800k IDR (€40) out of the €843 paid for the 3 days; is this a joke, you might ask? Certainly not. Regarding the waterfall and Mount Ijen, very pretty but touristy; the message could have stopped there, but we had chosen an English-speaking guide; guess what, the Ijen guide did not speak a word of English and seemed completely lost during the visit and did not know where to go. In short, if you want to organize the whole trip yourself, take this excursion. I strongly advise you against doing business with this unreliable company, which is far from having shown a professional attitude. Best regards.

Hamdan was a great guide on this tour. Very knowledgeable of the areas we visited and was very personable. Even though the tour was quite intense in its timings, Hamdan still showed us a good time with a smile, even slowly climbing Ijen in the rain with us. Thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent together as I learnt more about Indonesia thru him than any other means. Would definitely look them up again if I was back in the Malang area. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing experience. Both the driver and guide, Henry and Noval, were great, professional, and great people the be with. The tour was nicely organized, and our accommodation were also beter than expected. I would really recommend this tour if you have a thing schedule, or just want to be effective with your time in Indonesia.

Our guides and driver were awesome! They ensured we were comfortable the entire 3 days. The experience was amazing. Unlike any other. For us we told our guides we wanted to skip on Bromo so we could get better sleeps for Ijen and this really made the 3D2N trip more manageable for us. I would recommend the 4D3N trip if Bromo is important for you and if you need your rest each night. Otherwise it is a very gruelling and tiring few days. The hike up Ijen is steep and hard! Make sure you are hydrated and feeling ok before you begin. There is eye gear the guide can rent you in addition to the mask, which is really helpful once you get close to the blue fire, the sulphur smoke will sting your eyes. Make sure to request it if you want to be close for good photos.

3D2D tumpak/bromo/ijen: The most excellent way to see East Java! These are the must - see sites of East Java all in one package, all the guess work of the details off your plate so you can enjoy! Our guide Hamdan and driver Mr. Scholeh were lovely and ensured we were comfortable the entire trip. They made extra stops for us when we needed to stop at a pharmacy etc. The itinerary for the 3D2N is a rigorous pace and you will experience loss of sleep due to the tight schedule. Take the 4 day tour if you need sleep or talk with the team in advance about an adjusted schedule. Ie in the rainy seasons it can be hard to see Mount Bromo anyways, so maybe choose to miss it so you get more sleep before the big Ijen night! The hike at Ijen is rigorous and steep and rocky. We are regular trekkers so we were fine but it is a hard hike. If you want to do this make sure you are in shape to handle hiking because that is the only way to see the wonderful blue fire. Gas masks and eye protection can be rented by your guide when you are there. I recommend the eye protection to get the best view of the fire!

What a wonderful 3-day tour. My first day started a bit late because I had booked very late the day before. This was more than made up for. The following days were AAAAAAMMMMAAAZZZIIINNGGG!! What a sight. I had the misfortune that there was no sun on Bromo and not in Ijen, but the clouds still gave a nice effect. The guides Hamdan and Mr. Angga were very helpful. Hamdan also knew when to shut up (internal joke;-)). It was a very nice trip, definitely recommended. A good tip I can give is to book at least 24 hours in advance.

An amazing 3D2N trip to Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, and Kawah Ijen. Stunning views, great organization, and totally unforgettable!

The tour itself was great! All three of our guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and the sites you visit are beautiful. Our driver Angga was polite and professional, and his car was comfortable. Communication could be improved. The day before the tour, Smartway sent us incorrect information about the departure time, but corrected it when I asked for clarification. They send detailed information about the each stop only one day in advance, but I wish they had sent it weeks earlier so we knew what to pack before leaving for Indonesia. They sent a basic packing list a few weeks prior to the tour that had incomplete information (for example, they said you needed to bring cash for entry fees for the different locations, but this was not needed). I had to proactively ask for the detailed info on one of the days because it was less than 4 hours before the pickup and I wasn’t given any info. Smartway is very responsive on Whatsapp though, so you just need to be proactive about asking questions. The logistics of the tour weren’t entirely clear on trip advisor, so read the rest of this review if you want to understand how it works. There is a single driver for the entire 3 days, and they take you to and from all locations. At each of the 3 hiking spots, they hand you off to a different local guide for the actual hiking part of the tour. Your luggage can stay in the car while hiking with the local guide. Be prepared that there are many hours of driving (usually 3-6 hours) in between the different locations. Information about each day/the hikes: Tumpak Sewu waterfall: you will drive ~2.5 hours from Malang to the waterfall. You will do lots of stairs up and down, cross waterfalls and wade through water that can be up to thigh deep. The hike is often wet and slippery, so you should wear hiking sandals or water shoes with good traction and be prepared for everything you are wearing to be completely soaked. Wearing a swimsuit under our clothes worked well. There is a chance to change clothes before the drive to the hotel. You stay in Malang city, and the drive back took ~3.5-4 hours due to traffic. Mount Bromo: You leave the hotel in Malang at 12:30 am and drive ~20-30min to meet up with your jeep driver (different person) for the day. Then you will ride in a very bumpy road/off-road for ~2-2.5 hours to get to the sunrise lookout. For sunrise, you will walk ~100-200 meters to the lookout point on a paved path. After sunrise, you will make a few stops in the Jeep, one of which is where you can hike the actual volcanic crater. The crater hike is not long, but does require some uphill and a few hundred stairs to reach the top. It takes ~35 min to reach the top. The stairs are well kept. There is an optional waterfall stop - if you stop here, you will hike ~2 km round trip to the waterfall. It is relatively steep down/up, but the waterfall is pretty (not as wide as tumpak sewu). You drive ~6-7 hours to get to the hotel in Bondowoso where you stay. Ijen Crater: You will be picked up at midnight to drive ~2 hours to Ijen. You will hike in the dark to the crater. The path there is all uphill and you gain ~500m of elevation. It is slightly steep for around 1k, and then very steep for the next 1.4k. Once you get to the top, the path is relatively flat and easy. Overall it is a very challenging hike up and moderate cardio fitness is a minimum requirement. We could not go all the way down into the crater to the blue fire, but the partial hike down was very uneven/rocky and slippery in spots. The total distance we walked was ~10k. After the hike, you will drive back to your drop off point. We drove to Surabaya which took ~5 hours on the toll road (we had to specifically ask to take the toll road and pay 150k extra for toll fees; the no toll route was ~7 hours). There is little time to sleep in the accommodations - be prepared for ~4-5 hours of sleeping time at the hotel. The hotels they picked were high quality and very nice for the few hours we were there (we chose the premium option when booking).
