Extremely authentic and genuine. I’d highly recommend the tour with Leandro Gonçalves. He’s amazing!
Such a great insightful experience. Feel very positive about the favelas and love that I came out not scared and really changing my worldview! What a fantastic time. Thank you Antonio
Gabi did an amazing job of being our guide. The whole experience was seamless. From the booking, the meetup to the tour. I enjoyed every aspect of the tour, except the walking. The guides were passionate and the tour was very informative.
Our tour guide Felipe was friendly, funny and extraordinarily knowledgeable about Rocinha! Learned some amazing facts about life in this favela!
I wouldn’t recommend it. Not because it’s not safe or anything. This specific tour is a rip off. I traveled solo. I arrived early because they asked us not to be late with only a 5 min grace period. I arrived early and they weren’t even there. They told me to wait until the appointment time. I said ok. 9:15 came and he was still MIA. With only a 5 minute grace period, I messaged them. I had to go looking for him. Not a good way to start off the tour. There are parts of the favela where you cannot take photos and that’s understandable and u respected that. Because they’ll have guns or be selling drugs. Now usually it’s in sign within those alley ways to indicate you can’t take photos. But we were walking and several times they told us to put our cameras away in places that were open. The government was working on a Sunday or they were doing something they weren’t supposed to be doing. That’s the entire point of the tour! I had meta glasses and they made me take them off. Again I respect the fact I had to take them off in the alley but walking in the street is ridiculous. My glasses are actually prescribed so I need them to see. Imagine walking blindly for 10 mins in a different country in a part of the city they stated was dangerous. I was a solo traveler so I was easily forgotten and ignored. They didn’t really accommodate to English. The dance show and everything was in Portuguese, Spanish or French, no English. The only English during the dance show was thanking everyone and asking for a tip. We walked for hours and there was no water provided at least to me. I saw the other travelers with water but I brought my own. So if you do decide to book bring your own water. They don’t provide it like they stated. I never received the photos from that day either. They never responded to my whatsapp
The experience was nice, the instructions well explained and the history of the favela. However, I think the value for money is not great. We are asked a lot of participation for the small shows etc that we see. No obligation but it is suggested .. the tour price should be lower in my opinion
Fantastic guided tour of a favela. Get told the story of Rocinha and enjoy the beautiful views with a drink in hand.
This is one of the most memorable tours I have taken. It offers a unique and fascinating insight into favela life and culture in an organised and accessible way. The guides ensured our safety at all times and were extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Highly recommended!
It was such a great experience to look into the history and culture of the Rachinho Favela. Victor was a great guide and I loved how he disclosed some of his times growing up on the favela and where he is now. 10/10, would recommend to anyone solo traveling or traveling with others.
First off would like to say my family and I heavily debated whether favela tourism is justified/ ethical. We decided to book this local tour in the hopes of educating ourselves on a broader aspect of life in Rio and to do so safely and with locals who would provide insight. We were heavily disappointed to find that our tour guide was disorganized. Firstly, the tour emphasized arriving to pickup spot on time - but then left the pickup spot 25 minutes after the designated time. This half an hour was not added back to our 3h that we paid for. Next, our guide, Gabi, was unable to capture the attention of the entire group (26 people). In our opinion, this was an irresponsibly large number of people in the first place. Other groups had 3-5 people, max. We as a group consistently blocked streets for locals and were in the way. It was uncomfortable and we would not have booked had we known this would be the case. Much worse in our opinion, however, our tour guide Gabi completely left the group alone for about an hour. We were on a rooftop with her nowhere to be seen. It is extremely irresponsible and unsafe of a tour guide to leave her entire group without warning. Thankfully, a nearby guide, Carlos, was amazing and taught us much about life in the favelas while we waited. Finally, Gabi was unwilling to answer any of our questions. We were eager to learn from her and she simply dismissed or laughed off every question. This was made worse by the type of people who joined the tour group - people only looking to visit favelas for the parties? Carlos's tour group seemed much more intent on visiting as an educational experience. Different demographic, which is something to consider if you are thinking about how to do this tour ethically. I would recommend a visit to this favela with a *different* local tour guide who is intentional about educating you if you are coming to learn. I would not recommend a visit with Gabi.
